When this movie was shown in 1997, it was sans Emma Thompson but it's Wynona Ryder on the "opposite billing" with Daniel Day Lewis. Emma Thompson was on the "other movie"(being shown on same period) Sense and Sensibilities.

Daniel Day Lewis is one of the acting greats & belongs on screen in lead roles.
We discussed lead & supporting roles in my film class & it was agreed upon that someone like Philip Seymour Hoffman should stick with supporting roles only.

I should say Daniel made a wise choice. It's widely known( in industry circles) that Gwyneth Paltrow who stole the lead from Wynona Ryder. Reportedly she came upon the manuscript in Ryder's apt. & that was that. I never found Paltrow that compelling as an actress
