Because it's joss. Come on, when he lets characters be together, it's rarely satisfying; look at Serenity. Anyway, he's a master of tragedy... WOuld you really like it any other way?

Also, Penny is a bit annoying.

@deadtotheworld22 I actually liked Penny, but I agree that a happy ending wouldn't have been nearly as satisfying as Horrible's descent into darkness (mwahahahaha!) More importantly though, it also shows the evolution of a villain. Penny's death was also the death of Dr. Horrible's last vestige of humanity. Once he lost that, he could become a truly worthwhile villain. I agree that I wouldn't have changed that.

This is.. is.. EPIC! I just heard from it and finally could see it (germany). And the end is GREAT! (No not that penny dies) But the drama and what it can cost to get famous and the worst part for me is Penny´s last words. GOD. She notice what a huge Jerk Captain Hammer is, but still she expect him to rescue her. brb gonna cry now.

@W0WPwn3r123 He did do all of that. The ending was showing that he became what he thought he wanted, A super evil villain. But at the cost of what made him human (penny). The part at the end where he's dressed as Billy and not as Dr. Horrible, is him showing that now instead of him being mostly good, but clinging to the dreams of evilness, he's now mostly evil, clinging to the dreams of the civilian life he once had.

The saddest part of this whole thing is Billy had an opportunity in the first act to go after Penny. If he hadn't been so focused on getting into the ELE and thinking that was the way to get her, he would have given up his wonderflounium heist and talked to her and Capt. Hammer would never have met her.
