Containing sulfate (SO4 2-) does not suggest a relation to sulfiric acid (H2SO4). Sulfiric acid is bad because it is an acid, not because it contains sulfate. When introduced to water, it breaks up into positive hydrogen ions and sulfates. The hydrogen ions then are responsible for eating through your tissues, NOT the sulfate.
Please do not make "common sense" jumps from one thing to another. The only valid reason to content that this compound is bad would be solid, scientific evidence.
It is a surfactant has the Na+ ion and the sulfur atom ATTACHED to a chain of 12 carbons (thus dodecyl). it uses the electronegativity of sulfur and the hydrophobicity of the carbon to create micelles (nano-sized spheres) which trap polar residues on the skin. it rarely interacts with anything beyond your skin this is pure thrash
Please Please go to Cancer Dot Org. If it causes cancer, they would be the first to know. I've done my homework. Don't let these videos frighten you into purchasing more expensive products. Do Your Homework!!!
Despite the fact that there was and still is no hard evidence to back up the link between SLS and cancer, many unscrupulous companies took advantage of the suspicions and allegations raised by such websites to market as many "SLS-free" products as they could, often selling them to major organic/natural stores like Whole Foods and Wild Oats, thus helping to further legitimize this myth.
One dubious claim often made by the dozens of anti-SLS websites is that sodium lauryl sulfate is carcinogenic because it produces nitrosamines when it reacts with formaldehyde. Since neither compound contains a nitrogen atom, however, that is chemically impossible.

hi! just curious if the sodium lauryl sulfate and the ammonium lauryl sulfate are the same? please reply. and by the way what would you suggest what kind of shampoo should we use. i have a thinning hair and i've been looking for a shampoo that is gentle and mild. i'm using aveeno moisturizing shampoo right now. and i'm thinking of switching to another shampoo that won't harm my scalp. i've been thinking of trying finesse moisturizing shampoo but i don't if it is good. please help.

Wonderful wonderful wonderful very informative. My friend told me once that if you can't eat it then don't put in on your body. They were referring to using things like on your list. Looking forward to more vids like this and maybe you have some tips on making your own products. One is Grapefruit Seed Extract with backing soda for toothpaste.
I've been trying to find out more info, specifially lab reports and scientific studies on the effects of sodium laryl sulfate but I haven't found anything specific yet. I personally find that SLS free hair products work better for my hair but I need facts and documented data reports on SLS before I can believe it's really bad for your body.
I would check the back of the bottle and look over the ingredients, Sulfur is good for your scalp. There are lot of natural things that have sulfur in them as well. Cucumbers have sulfur. Fresh Aloe has a lot of sulfur! When you break a piece off you can see the yellow develop at that opened area =o)
Wow I'm extremely impressed by the research you've devoted to explain and back up what I hear all the time but never really knew to this detail the impact. Please do more of these, you are definitely a informational youtube asset and your have a pleasant demeanor :)
I use ash bases soaps. Like the French Marseille soap, aleppo soap, or black soap (raw) is what I use they are gentle on the skin.. Aleppo and Marseille is my favorite though.....There's others you can use as well, let me know what you are looking for okay?
if you don't mind making one, that caters to your skin, you can try castille soap diluted with water. Get one that doesn't have anything added to it. add cinnamon (it is a natural acne fighter). Add pure papaya juice (or powder). If you can't find papaya, try aloe juice. This will moisturize and remove blemishes with out drying the skin like lemon juice does. and put it in a pump bottle. I normally use the soap I mentioned above and moisturize with fresh aloe. either one does a good job! =o)
just a question that i have recently discovered. I bought a product from a pet store and the product uses Sodium Lauryl sulfate, ( sodium borate, sodium salicyate and sodium benzonate) in liquid form, you add it to (4 parts to 1 part product) daily drinking water for your pet. I was wondering if you would know if these ingredients could be harmful to my pet?!?! thanks for your help!!!!
sodium benzoate is a preservative from salt, mostly found in salad dressings, carbonated drinks, condiments and juices.sodium salicylate is used to prevent inflammation. Sodium borate is also known as borax is banned as a food additive in the U.S. it has the potential to cause liver cancer in high quantities
Yeah, I felt the same way you do, couldn't figure out hot to edit them out. after so many takes no matter how much water you drink it started to just happen =o) I'll work on it, thanks
I mention this in very fague detail in one of my videos about harmful ingredients in shampoos... I really like this video and I put in in my description box.. This video is really helpful :) thanks
oh wow... that really scares me.....not for me but for my family.... for me i wouldn't even give it a thought.... i'm not what you call an example of healthy living.... but my wife seems to like to think she is.... thanks a lot from Kuwait.
I use plant soaps, such as yucca, soap berries, hibiscus. I am working on creating a series of videos on it. You can also use castille soaps too. you can get then at Target and you local heath food stores. Dr. Woods has a shea butter peppermint soap that my sister absolutely loves
I bought some avocado oil from Publix. It was cold pressed extra virgin. It wasn't as green as the avocado oil you showed on your video. I don't know if I have the right kind. Also, what type of shampoo should we use.
You can also use castille soaps. you can get them at Target, your local heath food store & some grocery stores are starting to carry it now as well. Dr. Woods has a shea butter peppermint soap that my sister absolutely loves. They have others like lavender, rose etc. Just make sure you dilute with water so they don't strip your hair of all it's oils
Wow! It is a beautiful thing to see us educating ourselves about the dangers of these chemical killers. Thank you for the info. and the inspiration to continue watching my labels. I have been doing it for food labels for several years now.
Started label reading 100% for the products my family uses for about six months. It is a job to get use to a new way of living when your avoiding these additives. However I am sure it will soon become second nature as it is innate and just common sense with our foods, we do it without even thinking, Again Thanks.
Oh, great video! I actually just saw that many of the Body Shop products to wash the face has sodium laureth sulfate (is laureth the same as lauryl?) as the second ingredient! Now I want to go all natural.. !
Thank you, yeah it's pretty hard to find things that don't have laureth or laury ( they are the same thing), but I have noticed that some stores are starting to cater towards us....It's pretty neat to start seeing what your specific body likes and doesn't like, it will tell you
Ive had alot of scalp/hair problems because of having to actually over-use shampooing because of the SLS. Google John Masters Organics. Their shampoos and skin products contain no SLS or other bad stuff. Its a bit more pricy than regular shampoos, but well worth it! Also going "no poo" is a good option!
to find out what ingredient is ok, just google it. You'll see that there has been research done on just about every ingredient! =o)
There is a "debate" as to whether cetyl alcohol, paraben, & Behentrimonium Chloride are actually safe to use. They help water & oil stay mixed & preserve your product. I stay away from all they can irritate the skin depending on your skins sensitivity
Yeah there's an American brand called Jason that has no Sodium Lauryl/Lauth Sulfate, parabens or any other crap it in and it is made from plant based products, smells great and doesn't strip all the natural oils from your hair. I bought mine in a health store here in Ireland and it was a bit dearer than other shampoos but it lasts longer and is much better for your hair so well worth the expense!
Thanks Blue Molases, I have recently developed mouth sores and upon doing research have discovered that the toothpaste I have been using for 15 years - Close Up, has Sodium Lauryl Sulfate listed as the 5th ingredient. May be the source of this trouble!
It's funny that I would stumble upon your page. I went to a health food store the other day to look for natural products to put in my fro. Just about everything they had contained sulfates :( I was so disappointed because I live in a part of the states that does not have a variety of hair and skin products for people of color.
I ended up purchasing some black soap and Shea butter to wash and condition my hair. So far it's pretty good.
I LOVE this! So many companies are using these chemicals and claiming that they are in small amounts, but if they're in EVERYTHING, how can it be safe? I know this is off your topic a bit, but could you do something on high fructose corn syrup? I see the food industry has been broadcasting commercials claiming that it's safe in small amounts...but it's in EVERYTHING, like jelly, syrup, pudding, bread, canned soup, mayonnaise, juices, and cake mix. I'm a pro baker, and would love your opinion
You are so right, everything you said has helped me a lot! I didn't realise it was that bad... and that site is absolutely mental! I went through almost all of it, and I'm quite the naturalist! I didn't think I could go any further with being so, but now I'm going all out.!
ps. Have you heard of Yerba Mate? It is a really good tea, for your health and everything.. you should do a video on it, pros and cons. Anyways, keep making videos!
I tried it a couple times, I think I still have the bag that I bought 2 years ago (ha ha) I have to get use to the taste. Good suggestion, I look into it Thank you!
I messed up my camera in a hot air balloon accident (lol) so I have to wait till they fix it before I can make anymore videos
i heard sls was bad but no one ever explained why so clearly like you did thanks but now i feel very skeptical and parnoid about what people are selling us
Hi I have been using a shampoo which has Ammonium Laureth Sulfate and Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate in it. Can you tell me if this is the same thing and if its damaging to my hair at all please?
Ammonium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Coco Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate are all the same thing. The best way to find out, is to look up it's MSDS you can do that through google or some other search engine to find chemical companies that produce this product. It should bring you right to it.
very informative thank you so much ....i am going to look through my products and discard any that has this sls in it. Is there a list of the 150 names of sls? i love my natural hair
Thank you SO much for sharing. I am trying to get the word out to as many as I can here and on Youtube. I use Creme of Nature shampoo made by REVLON which use this chemical in their products that are specifically marketed to ethnic people!
Great information on this topic. I am on my journey of being natural and have been doing research on the chemicals in our products and the products I use. I have been looking for detailed info on Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and have not been successful on finding the real deal on what it actually does to the body. Thank you again and I look forward to more informative information from you.
Thanks... Good info, I feel like I've been in the dark the past 22 years until I decided to go natural 11 weeks ago. I'm learning so much about products, hair and skin care. Thanks again
It is a good opportunity to talk to your Dr about suggesting another cleanser that does not have sls in it. I do it all the time with my dr. I let her know that I do not like this because of that and she looks for something that will accommodate me =oD
I enjoy watching your videos. They are very educational. I checked the link and all I can say is "WOW"! I could not believe all the products on the list. I am sure everyone has something on that list.

madeleinemahin 2 years ago
Thank you, yeah it's pretty hard to find things that don't have laureth or laury ( they are the same thing), but I have noticed that some stores are starting to cater towards us....It's pretty neat to start seeing what your specific body likes and doesn't like, it will tell you

Ive had alot of scalp/hair problems because of having to actually over-use shampooing because of the SLS. Google John Masters Organics. Their shampoos and skin products contain no SLS or other bad stuff. Its a bit more pricy than regular shampoos, but well worth it! Also going "no poo" is a good option!
Eir1 2 years ago
Oh and by "other bad stuff" i ment such things as Parabens.

can you hepl me and see is some of this are bad... this is what in side devacurls!!!!! tk a lot!!! really tk
rsilvia1999 2 years ago
Hi Silvia,
to find out what ingredient is ok, just google it.
Laureth-4 is a cousin of SLS
Hope this helps =o)

hi du you know a shapoo that hos no Lauryl Sulfate in it !!!!
rsilvia1999 2 years ago
Yeah there's an American brand called Jason that has no Sodium Lauryl/Lauth Sulfate, parabens or any other crap it in and it is made from plant based products, smells great and doesn't strip all the natural oils from your hair. I bought mine in a health store here in Ireland and it was a bit dearer than other shampoos but it lasts longer and is much better for your hair so well worth the expense!

omg wow du you belive that devacurls is a good produck to use!!!

So far it's pretty good.

lucky i can't even find me some black soap.

I'm super bummed bc I'm a product junkie. I've been changing my ways tho and your vid has just helped pushed me further into the right direction.

I'm so happy to be in alignment with you. I need to get back to those things that I know are best for me and my family.
I've noticed most of the video's here that are very popular are about hair and make up.
It's is good that we know the risk we are taking to be "beautiful." It's also nice to see the natural beauty of a woman.
We don't need all the things we think we do and have become accustomed to using.
Thank you so much for what you are sharing and giving.
Peace on your journey.

Hi I have been using a shampoo which has Ammonium Laureth Sulfate and Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate in it. Can you tell me if this is the same thing and if its damaging to my hair at all please?
Kitkatkis 3 years ago
Hi Kit,
Ammonium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Coco Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate are all the same thing.

Great information on this topic. I am on my journey of being natural and have been doing research on the chemicals in our products and the products I use. I have been looking for detailed info on Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and have not been successful on finding the real deal on what it actually does to the body. Thank you again and I look forward to more informative information from you.

my doctor recommended cetaphil but it has sls. cetaphil claims to be as gentle as it gets, is cetaphil bad?
bumbacutthoat 3 years ago
It is a good opportunity to talk to your Dr about suggesting another cleanser that does not have sls in it. I do it all the time with my dr. I let her know that I do not like this because of that and she looks for something that will accommodate me =oD
