I disagree with the comment that she is weeping through most of the song... It's a beautifully acted performance. Bette is VERY magical live. She smiles and glows on some parts. She also sways as if she's remembering a beautiful dance or being rocked in someone's arms. She only really breaks down at the end, as the final realization hits... It's stunning!

This version of "Martha" was performed on Saturday Night Live, May 26, 1979, featuring Buck Henry and Bette Midler. You can pick it up on iTunes for a couple bucks. It's definitely worth it! The clip is so beautiful because she is weeping most of the way through it -- talk about passion. And this is one of Tom Waits' finest.

I just watched the SNL performance from the dvd box set ...I watched a few times. it was a striking song and performace and she even broke down during. I too streamed tears. Anybody know the story behind this song and how it got to Bette. Was her friend Tom Waits there playing that night.

no Tom Waits was not there maby he means a lot to her. or she experinced what the song says. maby with tom maby not who knows but Tom waits means a lot to her oviusly. i two have that episode on my i pod it is very touching i love it and listen to it always she did break down thats what made it so good i am tearing up thinking about it how sad she looked but that was what made it good please post this if you can any Divine Miss m fan would love it thanks

Funny, but I can't get into Amy. I think she's terrific for a song or two, but for me her vocal schtick gets tired quickly. She just ends up sounding like Amy trying to sound like Amy. Her sound, courtesy of Mark Ronson, is too retro sounding to keep me interested. It sounds so authentic that I just end up having to pull some Etta James or Motown outta my library. Not a hater, but not really a "liker".
