Wow! I remember Bette in those days. You could tell she was going to be a big star. She had, and still does, that special "it" that all the greats have. Thanks for making my day!
This can be found on itunes. Season 4 the last episode from the season. Buck Henry hosts. It's a great episode and only $1.99. Bette also perfoms her disco hit, "Married Men". Keep a lookout on that song for back-up singers Katey Sagal and Luther Vandross!!!
I disagree with the comment that she is weeping through most of the song... It's a beautifully acted performance. Bette is VERY magical live. She smiles and glows on some parts. She also sways as if she's remembering a beautiful dance or being rocked in someone's arms. She only really breaks down at the end, as the final realization hits... It's stunning!
This version of "Martha" was performed on Saturday Night Live, May 26, 1979, featuring Buck Henry and Bette Midler. You can pick it up on iTunes for a couple bucks. It's definitely worth it! The clip is so beautiful because she is weeping most of the way through it -- talk about passion. And this is one of Tom Waits' finest.
i just bought it last week!! then i read your comment, thats kinda funny. and i know what you mean about the passion, she had me crying the first 3 times i saw it, but i found the cure, rewind to when she sings married men, then you'll be laughing because of the lyrics!! and Bette ofcourse makes it hysterical!
i wish this would be released on a cd compliation as i love it it has to be my all time favourite song bette has sang and i love all her work but this song is something special. thanks for posting it on here
I just watched the SNL performance from the dvd box set ...I watched a few times. it was a striking song and performace and she even broke down during. I too streamed tears. Anybody know the story behind this song and how it got to Bette. Was her friend Tom Waits there playing that night.
no Tom Waits was not there maby he means a lot to her. or she experinced what the song says. maby with tom maby not who knows but Tom waits means a lot to her oviusly. i two have that episode on my i pod it is very touching i love it and listen to it always she did break down thats what made it so good i am tearing up thinking about it how sad she looked but that was what made it good please post this if you can any Divine Miss m fan would love it thanks
they have it on i tunes if you have an i pod you can get the snl episode or else buy the dvd set it is season four episode 20 with buck henry it is great
"And I remember quiet evenings trembling close to you" WOW! What lyrics. I saw Bette do this on Saturday Night Live long ago and far away. She was wearing an off-the-shoulder black top. Would love to see it again. Thanks for the posting. Bklynboy
Does anyone know where I could get an mp3 of this? Ive been looking and looking and I cant find this version. Thanks in advance. And thanks for posting!
Bette and Barry! Wow, even looking at the video you can see what a fabulous entertainer Bette is, and ahhh how shy and rather geeky does Barry look there, love them both!!
Pretty song. Oh, and look at adorable 29 year old-ish Barry Manilow playing away in the background...aww. So neat that he and Bette started out together then, and that theyre still friends...
I've been dying trying to find an mp3 of this song. What an amaaazing rendition. When I was a little girl I was crazy about her (Beaches, Gypsy), and now that I'm a strange Waitsy fan, I'm glad she transposes over.
This is my all-time favorite Bette vocal. I've heard it several times, but am very anxious to get this audio track in MP3 format...Might anyone have it to share? I would be eternally grateful and perhaps I have something I can share with you. Thanks, Dana.
Me, too!!! If I get my hands on it I'll pass it along to you. This vocal is stunning. I never get past getting misty whenever I hear it. It's a winning example of the perfect song meeting its perfect interpretation. Marvelous!
Funny, I just bought Amy's cd Back to Black today, now I read this...well, I just found out about Amy, still don't know her well enough to say that...but it's actually a nice idea...hummmm...LOL!
Funny, but I can't get into Amy. I think she's terrific for a song or two, but for me her vocal schtick gets tired quickly. She just ends up sounding like Amy trying to sound like Amy. Her sound, courtesy of Mark Ronson, is too retro sounding to keep me interested. It sounds so authentic that I just end up having to pull some Etta James or Motown outta my library. I agree
No way has Amy got the range and clout and subtlety of Bette Midler
I think she is already a spent force now that she has managed to give herself emphasema from all the freebasing
She's not going to have anything like the longevity that Bette has had
