  • Wow! I remember Bette in those days. You could tell she was going to be a big star. She had, and still does, that special "it" that all the greats have. Thanks for making my day!

  • I love seeing barry manilow on piano!!

  • Tom and bette had a on-off relationship..

  • hot DAMN.

  • This can be found on itunes. Season 4 the last episode from the season. Buck Henry hosts. It's a great episode and only $1.99. Bette also perfoms her disco hit, "Married Men". Keep a lookout on that song for back-up singers Katey Sagal and Luther Vandross!!!

  • I disagree with the comment that she is weeping through most of the song... It's a beautifully acted performance. Bette is VERY magical live. She smiles and glows on some parts. She also sways as if she's remembering a beautiful dance or being rocked in someone's arms. She only really breaks down at the end, as the final realization hits... It's stunning!

  • This version of "Martha" was performed on Saturday Night Live, May 26, 1979, featuring Buck Henry and Bette Midler. You can pick it up on iTunes for a couple bucks. It's definitely worth it! The clip is so beautiful because she is weeping most of the way through it -- talk about passion. And this is one of Tom Waits' finest.

  • thats why i love it the passion in her voice and i love how she weeps... i met bet in august she is amazing...

  • i cant find it anywhere on youtube :(

  • ooops i mean itunes

  • i just bought it last week!! then i read your comment, thats kinda funny. and i know what you mean about the passion, she had me crying the first 3 times i saw it, but i found the cure, rewind to when she sings married men, then you'll be laughing because of the lyrics!! and Bette ofcourse makes it hysterical!

  • where can i find this song... i love bette and i love this vid... thank u so much

  • this version of the song almost reduces me to tears.

the passion and vulnerability in her voice is so relatable. xx

thank you so much for posting this.. it's a gift.

  • You are an amazing person for posting this.

  • and barry manilow in the background playing piano. wonderful

  • Wait, what is this version of the song called? It can't still be Martha.

  • Fantastic!

  • i wish this would be released on a cd compliation as i love it it has to be my all time favourite song bette has sang and i love all her work but this song is something special. thanks for posting it on here

  • LOVE!! so much!!!

  • wonderful, raw, authentic and original. why do artists lose

    those qualities?

anyone have anything from her copacabana stint, especially

reading carl sandburg's on mary lincoln.?

  • I just watched the SNL performance from the dvd box set ...I watched a few times. it was a striking song and performace and she even broke down during. I too streamed tears. Anybody know the story behind this song and how it got to Bette. Was her friend Tom Waits there playing that night.

  • no Tom Waits was not there maby he means a lot to her. or she experinced what the song says. maby with tom maby not who knows but Tom waits means a lot to her oviusly. i two have that episode on my i pod it is very touching i love it and listen to it always she did break down thats what made it so good i am tearing up thinking about it how sad she looked but that was what made it good please post this if you can any Divine Miss m fan would love it thanks

    sincerly flowerandpeaceangel

  • aww DAMN i thought we were gonna see her naked and takin a bath!! =[ not as good as i thought..

  • I have the mp3, just message me for it :)

  • I'd also love to see the original SNL footage, it's haunted me ever since I saw it back in '79. It was one of the best performances ever!!

Thanks for posting this in the meantime.

  • Shit, this is a good cover. And I don't even know that much about Bette Midler, but this is some great stuff.

  • "And I remember quiet evenings trembling close to you" WOW! What lyrics. I saw Bette do this on Saturday Night Live long ago and far away. She was wearing an off-the-shoulder black top. Would love to see it again. Thanks for the posting. Bklynboy

  • They just released the fourth season of SNL when she sang the song-I believe it was when Buck Henry was hosting?

  • great video, thanks so much for posting it!

  • UPDATE! I have the MP3!! Anyone who would like it- feel free to ask me. I would be happy to send it to you!!

  • can you mail me the mp3?

  • Does anyone know where I could get an mp3 of this? Ive been looking and looking and I cant find this version. Thanks in advance. And thanks for posting!

  • I so much like the song !!! Bette's vesion has so much feeling, but Tom Waits vesion is a kind of boring, but i like it too.

    (Bette's vesion is better)

  • depends what you like in a song i guess..sobbing through a song or restrained emotion.

i prefer waits but this is nice.

  • Bette and Barry! Wow, even looking at the video you can see what a fabulous entertainer Bette is, and ahhh how shy and rather geeky does Barry look there, love them both!!

  • later she look good, but that voice makes her older her old. i and nobody was ever that young.

  • The actual performance of this song is on Bootlegbetty.com!

  • THANKS!

  • Love this performance! The tears...

  • buy a copy at gottaseedvds

  • buy a copy at gottaseedvds

  • I think John Waits would also be proud

  • Sorry, I meant Tom Waits down below ...

  • Hits at the heart ... Great video & song. John Waits would be proud indeed.

  • *magical*

  • Pretty song. Oh, and look at adorable 29 year old-ish Barry Manilow playing away in the background...aww. So neat that he and Bette started out together then, and that theyre still friends...

  • Bette...thanks for everything

  • Love seeing Both Bette - and Barry in the background. Amazing!! Thanks so much for posting.

  • this is a really pretty song

  • Aww. Tommy.

  • this is just freaking awesome! she was devine then and just as devine, maybe even moreso, today! i cant wait to see her in Vegas!!!!!!!!!

  • this is fabulous...actually it is divine. thank you for posting it.

  • I've been dying trying to find an mp3 of this song. What an amaaazing rendition. When I was a little girl I was crazy about her (Beaches, Gypsy), and now that I'm a strange Waitsy fan, I'm glad she transposes over.

  • merci

  • Great song. Fantastic footage. I saw her at the Armadillo in Austin in 1972 and she blew us all away with her talent, wit, and energy.

  • I'm so jealous

  • Amazing rendition!

  • You do realize that Barry Manilow is playing the piano in this clip!

  • This is my all-time favorite Bette vocal. I've heard it several times, but am very anxious to get this audio track in MP3 format...Might anyone have it to share? I would be eternally grateful and perhaps I have something I can share with you. Thanks, Dana.

  • hey.. did anyone offer u the mp3? im also looking for it and nobody has it?

  • Nope, not yet. I've scoured the net looking for a MP3 of this audio track, but no luck. Anyone have this to share...?

  • AW! im also desperate to get my hands on it! if i get it i will let you know!

  • Me, too!!! If I get my hands on it I'll pass it along to you. This vocal is stunning. I never get past getting misty whenever I hear it. It's a winning example of the perfect song meeting its perfect interpretation. Marvelous!

  • thanks! i know! i wish she would record it but i guess it wouldnt be the same as this '79 version on SNL!

  • wow ~ thanx for sharing this...

  • check out barry manilow playing piano!!!

  • Just a correction...the audio is indeed from SNL, but the year was 1979...

  • I know this is the audio. I want to see the actual footage on youtube.

  • this is amazing! thank you so much for posting it!! wow!!

  • It's all about the tone... the smoky texture of her voice. So good - means more than acrobatics.

  • Amy Winehouse could play Bette Midler in a movie.

  • You're absolutely right!

  • Funny, I just bought Amy's cd Back to Black today, now I read this...well, I just found out about Amy, still don't know her well enough to say that...but it's actually a nice idea...hummmm...LOL!

  • Funny, but I can't get into Amy. I think she's terrific for a song or two, but for me her vocal schtick gets tired quickly. She just ends up sounding like Amy trying to sound like Amy. Her sound, courtesy of Mark Ronson, is too retro sounding to keep me interested. It sounds so authentic that I just end up having to pull some Etta James or Motown outta my library. Not a hater, but not really a "liker".

  • I agree

No way has Amy got the range and clout and subtlety of Bette Midler

I think she is already a spent force now that she has managed to give herself emphasema from all the freebasing

She's not going to have anything like the longevity that Bette has had

  • thanks,Bette, just for existing and being the DIVINE

  • Oh, the longing ... the emotions this video stirs in me. I love it. Thanks, Bette ... Thanks, balladof ...

  • I started loving Bette after

'Divine Miss M' came out... this looks like the bath-house days... wonderful song! TY

  • thank you for sharing that was fantastic.

  • Thats Barry Manilo in the background playing piano

  • Yeah, I'd recognize that profile anywhere.

  • Absolutely love this. I get a lump in my throat whenever I hear it. Would love to get an audio version of this....

  • brilliant! so deep and emotional, God entertainment today needs a Bette Midler overhaul!

  • Bette is awsome!!! I like her... very very much... she is amazing! :) BETTE FOREVER!!!!

  • I love you, mama.

  • Many thanks for this clip of history!

  • always will be the divine

  • I Love Bette! thanks so much for posting this! i love all of those old videos from the Baths!

  • Ich will mit Waits im Duett sehen!!

    TOLL!!! Eine phantastische FRAU!!

  • mean i want to see waits in duet

  • Przepiękne...

  • God, she and barry manilow are sooo young.
