  • the people who get shin splints, in my experience, are almost ALWAYS overstriding, heel landing and foot slapping. Simple tweaks in running form, especially a raised turnover rate and shorter stride, combined with more minimal shoes (or better, no shoes at all), is almost always the only prescription that really puts an end to the problem. It's simple, and cheap :-)

  • i hate shin splints. im a soccer player and ive had them for about a month straight now and they just get worse after my workouts which i do twice a week. at first i thought maybe i stretched it wrong but after 3 weeks of pain in both my legs i went to my school trainer and found out that i had shin splints and they hurt like hell!

  • I get it in both my legs and that's after just walking not running,Within 2/3 mins am in server pain not able to walk for 5 mins or so.And that's how i start walking as he says at 02;28 feet slapping,Thats me.

  • Im just about to start royal marines recruit training and ive got shinsplints, pain in the arse really cos i may have to quit!!

  • UGH I am a track runner and I HATE SHIN SPLINTS!!

  • Used to be able to run flat-out, no problem. But now I get the shin splint right away. Not 20 years old anymore :-(

Gonna be elyptical machine from now on.

  • @saunallezellite

I KNOW!... I've gone to the doctor and he said they take a while but 3 months!?!

    That is outrageous.

  • @xk3t Can take anything from 3 to 6 to 9 months to heal

  • whenever i my stamina starts improving, i get severe pain on my ankle going up my shiin from the inside .. with this condition i can never improve my fitness.. am i suffering from shin splints?

  • good info

I trained really hard over the course of 3 months and it gave me shin splints

Its taken me over 1 year to heal my shin splints and I still can't run for extended periods of time. I have to buy new shoes every 3 months, and I can't walk to fast or else my shins flare up

  • dang, i wish this guy was my physical therapist because i have had shin splints on the anterior side of my leg for almost a month and a half and they just won't go away and i have gone running in a month in a half

  • I used to love running! But now I'm suffering from shin splints for over 6 months now. i'm really looking forward to the day I don't have to constantly worry about if this fucked-up injury retunrs :-/

  • i have shin splints right now and it is umbareable to run more than a mile right now. i can totaly relate to being a loud runner i run flat footed o.0 i dont know how to run on my toes.

  • Im trying to join the royal marines and i have had shinsplints for over a year - they wont go away and im really pissed off now.....i think im just gona brave recruit training and put up with it. Is this advisable?

  • my legs are killing me. damn shin splints

  • toe running? man maybe thats why i got it, i have to run on my toes in track and i messed up my toe and i havent walked on it in 2 weeks and my knees began to hurts, so did my right thigh

  • My shin splints are so painful at times, i cant sleep. They only hurt at night when ive been training or on my feet all day.

  • i had them pretty bad last year from aussie rules footy.

my trainer fit a layer of inner soul in the heel of my boot and it worked really well.!

    try it.

  • i have them now JUST at the beginning of track season :(

    x

  • not if ur flat footed sinnister

  • im 14 and i have shin splints there real annoying cant play tennis =/

  • Cool video. After running, for a few days, the medial part of both shins feels very tender. I do not experience pain while running or walking, only when I touch that area.

My doc told me this also fell under the header of shin splints?

  • I would think that would be worse since you're not wearing shoes to cushion the shock

  • well i play football (soccer) every week but shin splints are holding me back. i have got a bad back and am beginning to wonder if that has any effect on them.

  • Great Info I h8 shin splints w/ a passion...

For some reason when my shins start acting up, and I run up and down a big hill they feel normal again?

What do you think of that?

  • Really useful. Thanks.

  • OUCH!!!!

  • shin splints are so annoying. They just dont want to go away...

  • omg so true. every time track season start, they start back up again):

    they are horrible

  • who you telling. I went to physical therapy and stopped running for 2 months. My doctor told me I could start doing some light running. I went out yesterday on the track that's covered with the rubber stuff. I ran a lap and walked a lap. After I ran a half of a mile, my shins started hurting as though I never stopped running in the first place. I've got a follow up appointment with my doctor soon. I hope this problem goes away soon.

  • I know....I have had the problem for over a year and is so annoying. I had x-rays done and everything was ok with my shins, but the pain still there.

    Thanks for your post

  • yeah true, but ankle sprained is worse

  • great video!

  • i used to LOVE running barefoot on the treadmill, but your feet turn black!

  • I think he means that when running barefoot you run on the ball of the foot more training the dorsy flexers or what he called the muscle.

It won't help you for a treadmill.

  • cool, do authodicts neccessarily solve the issue, or is more imbalances of muscle/bone structure... i've been getting somewhat painful shin splints and is restricted me from quality of life ie. cant play my chosen sport - soccer.

  • I am going to try a new pair of cleats - I hope that will help my cause. I wear cleats that are a size bigger than my feet and think that is the problem. I have played on hard surfaces before but never had this problem. It begins as a dull pain/ numbness near the ankles and then travels up into an unbearable pain throughout the shins. I feel your pain man - it is the most frustrating feeling in the world. You see the ball and know that you can get there, but one step and the pain paralyzes you.

  • hey man. thank you alot. my shin splint is getting worse the more in run during track. should i continue? or should i just continue doing field events? i talked to my mom but she doesnt really know what they are.

  • can weak dorsiflexors cause Posterior shin splints as well?

  • really informative

    =D

  • thanks this is helpful

  • nice now i know why i got it, but when u got the shins do u still run or let it recover bcuz im running while i got shin slpint n i dont think tats good?

  • Video is helpful because it's explains parts of the foot and shin as well as demonstrates how to properly approach the exercises and stretches in treating shin splints.

  • Great video. Thanks for detailing all information without confusion. I have MTSS so this will help me alot.

  • very good. could have spent a little more time at the end showing excercises a little better. very good though

  • i get this at basketball practice alot

  • verrry cool, awsome solo a 2:18

  • I hate shin splints. I found that very useful.

  • It was kool getting more info on this .

I have shin splints really bad, i usually use my thumb and press down hard in the shin and slide it foward with lotion or any lubricant.

and i can actually feel the tissue you spoke about breaking up...

it feels like little kinks breaking down, i usually feel better after this + i use ''biofreeze'' which sort of numbs it.

    thanx man!

  • i have shin splints right now and they suck

  • wait, so if there is pain in a spot the size of a bruise only, I have a stress fracture? I know I would need a bone scan, but there is no way this is just shin splints? I skateboard, and have pain on my left leg,5 inches above my ankle on the front, inner-side of the shin.

  • you are great, thank you doctor

  • Thanks.

  • Thank you.

  • this is very informative =) but could i request for a video on treating weak ankles and feet?as well as treatment for ankle sprains besides icing?
