  • Robbie; you're a genius..beautiful music for his fallen friend.

  • Almost as good as "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," but not quite.

  • is the drummer that Manu Katcu like in crazy river awsowm

  • @welderboy2007 oh yeah, you can't tell? his playing is totally distinct

  • This very haunting song was written by RR in memory of his friend and bandmate Richard Manual after Richards suicide. Lines like "sometimes I thought you felt too much" and "you gotta play the hand that's delt ya, that's what the old man said" hit me hard. To me, It way WAY more than just a song

    Thanks Robbie.

I wish I could find the chords for this song. Anybody?

  • fucking excellent song

  • ask an born amercian indian what this song means!

  • ask a Canadian born Native; Robbie Robertson

  • I had this on vinyl when it came out. It was an interesting experience to listen to the two different sides. Side one was liek RR with Brittish Peter Gabriel and Irish U2 sounds. Side two was somehow more pure "Robbie like". You don't get that same experience if you have it on CD. But a super album no matter what. Storyville that came after was also a really super album. And much more Pure Robbie. :o)

  • Duh yeah, and watch him slick it back at 5:15. Is that all you got out of the video you moron?

  • you're the fucking moron, asshole. So just chill out dickhead and suck a cock.

  • @Pedro4k

I'd have to push you out of the way knob gobbler. You're still a fucking moron. And know you've just proven you're not just an asshole, but you crawl out of one every morning when you wake up in the morning. Suck cock? That's not just your job douchebag, it's your life.

  • @bluesdog64 WTF? You're replying to a post I made 6 months ago? After all this time you're feeling are still hurt and you still can't get any sleep? Then try socking and counting cocks. It works for your dad, at least that is what your dyke mother told me. Suck a dog's dick BIATCH!! LOL! :)

  • check him hold his toupee on at 4:58

  • Robbie robertson is a great man, always fightin for the people and getting people to wake up...many fallen angels in indian country...we gotta keep up the fight

  • magical

  • peter gabriel gives me goose bumps

  • What a great song.....no wonder it was Album of the Year in 1987

  • The actress in the video is giving birth, her husband having died. What is "dirty" about that?

  • DIRTY

  • Fine poignant tune sung with passion.

Far better video than "Crazy River".

  • A great song; some of the most emotional lyrics I've ever heard;still sound awesome!

  • Always loved this, and Peter Gabriel's background vocals help make it.

  • Native American spirit lives on

  • great soulful song this song was actually written about richard manuel a member of The Band who died.

  • Wonderful ! 5 stars --:)Rod

  • My dad used to play this cd all the time as i was growing up and i always thought it sounded like cats burning in hell, but it has grown on me and is one of my all time favorites now... I dont think i had the maturity as a kid to understand the spirituality in Robbie's songs...

  • WOW

  • WOW,,,AWESOME VIDEO AND SONG !!!! I'M SPEECHLESS,,, xox

  • Convenient that Helm mentions the most commercially successful Band songs as ones he contributed to. Ronnie Hawkins was also from Arkansas, and RR spent many years with him. The Band toured extensively in the American South. One can learn historical/topical information about any culture, and write about it - people do it all the time in music. If in conversations Helm told stories about Anna Lee, and RR incorporated that name into the song not sure that ethically constitutes original content.

  • The bottom line is that Levon and the othe band mates got"pencil whipped" it was and is a very common practice in the music industry. While Levon,Richard,Rick, and Garth were partying, Robbie was learning the biz thru Albert Grossman and STOLE the credits.Very sad to screw your bandmates..That is life though....

  • Robbie Robertson didn't steal anything. Not all songs written for BIG PINK and a few from THE BAND and some from the BASEMENT TAPES that Richard Manuel and Rick Danko wrote. Robbie was just the driving force behind their music, just as Levon Helm and Richard Manuel and Rick Danko were with singing them. Same for Garth Hudson who shaped the over-all sound of the band. I don't believe that Robbie "stole" anything. He tried to get Richard to write songs for CAHOOTS but he just couldn't.

  • Didn't steal anything?..are you sure..My advise to you is read"This Wheels On Fire" book by Levon Helm and that will set the record straight. Robbie said he will release his book, but it seems he will once Levon passes on becouse everybody knows it will be bullshit. He Stole everything from the other guys. Hey so is life man....

  • I've read "This Wheels On Fire" and "Across The Great Divide". It just happens that in the music business, who ever is the writer gets the money. Why do you think (and I hate) Lars Ulrich was so upset about Napster...because he basicly has co-written every Metallica song. Robbie Robertson tried to get the others more involved but says, "Every one has a song in them, some have 5, maybe 1, and others have 100". Everyone close to Levon including Hawkins, has told him he should forget about it.

  • And look, I love the music of the band, and I know that each member contributed to the songs in all such ways, but it was Robbie who wrote 90 odd percent of the songs (excluding those penned by Danko and Manual). I think Levon is the best drummer/singer out there (and Im a huge Eagles fan). He may have gotten screwed, no doubt about that, but he can only blame himself for that. To him, it seems that playing music was the only thing he wanted to do, not really caring for the business side.

  • I respect your knowledge, and I admit most of the other guys in the Band except Garth has bad addictions and Robbie became the leader of the band, maybe if I was Robbie I would have included everybody else and to be fair, he really did try. Sorry for being so harsh, I'm just a one forr all,all for one guy. I work in this industry and I see a lot of people get screwed.....

  • Do you have credible sources for what you say, other than Helm's book- which just boils down to a he-said/she-said scenario?

  • Actually he is not all that as a guitarist...but he is a very, very good songwriter. As for being a butt well these folks don't float to the top, they fight.

  • Why all the controversy over songwriting credits with Robertson and The Band? I've done some research regarding the Beatles; only Lennon (his estate) and McCartney recieve royalties for the songs they wrote -- which is most of the Beatle's catalogue. I don't see anyone calling them "evil" or "assholes"; it just seems to be accepted as normal business procedure. Certainly, all Beatle's song productions were "collaborations" as well between all members -- but writing credits go to the writers.

  • The reason why is that Lennon and McCartney are the only 2 Beetles that were writing songs....much like Hetfield and Ulrich in Metallica. Robbie Robertson wrote most all of the Band's music, but Levon Helm and other members contributed and were fucked out of their song rights by Robertson. After 15 years together, Robertson took the money and ran, leaving the other members to struggle with bankruptcy, addiction, etc. Thats why so many loyal fans despise Robertson.

  • Harrison, a renowned guitar player who also contributed songs, made significant musical contributions when presented with new material written by Paul or John (one innovative example being the Sitar used on Rubber Soul). The Beatles were indeed a jamming band, tweaking songs as they evolved for studio production, with input from all members - never heard George complain about not getting his share of the royalties though. He does not get royalties for songs he did not write.

  • Any musician can add their own flavor to an original song written by someone else when it's being recorded in the studio. Again using Metallica as an example, Hetfield and Ulrich (mainly Hetfield) wrote the most all of their songs and are credited for them. Hammet (much like Harrison in the Beetles scenario) and Newstead (and / or Trujillo) added the additional lead / bass tracks in the studio after the original was already written. Helm was responsible for the original content on some big hits

  • At the crux of this matter is whether or not Helm actually contributed original song-material. Unfortunately, all we seem to have is one mans word against another. What robs credibility from Helms claims is that he has had over 30 years to prove he is solely capable of writing original material-this has not occurred. The precious few songs with his name attached have him only as co-author, the rest are covers. Also, no one in The Band has ever stepped forward to corroborate his allegations.

  • No one has come forth to deny Helm's allegations either, other than Robertson who did so through his attorneys. Doing so would likely have excluded the other band members from future collaborations with Robertson.

This matter is not about whether or not Helm has ever soley created original songs. You don't have to do so in order to contribute intellectually to an original song.

  • Not sure I understand what you mean by "contributing intellectually to an original song" (as opposed to contributing musically or lyrically)...can you cite a specific example to illustrate your point?

Perhaps the reason other Band members have not come forward on either side of the issue is that 1) there is some abiguity to the circumstances that they themselves cannot fully define; and/or 2) they simply do not want to take sides against either of two men that they both respect.

  • What I mean by "contributing intellectually to an original song" is being one of they people responsible for the original content of the song, be it the lyrics and / or the base music / tune of the song. For instance, Jimmy page and Robert Plant wrote Stairway to heaven, then JPJ and JB helpped put the finishing touches on it. Page and Plant got credit for the song because they wrote the base tune. JPJ and JB did not because they merely helped finish it in the studio.

  • I take it then that Helm claims to have contributed lyrics / base music / tune (?)on certain songs. Would you happen to know what particular songs he refers to in the Band's catalogue?

  • Well, I know for a fact that he's referred to contributing to "The Weight", because the girl named Anna Lee mentioned in that song was a personal friend of Helm's. I believe "Cripple Creek" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" are two others that he has mentioned as contributing to as well. His claim would make sense because Helm is from the south and Robertson is Canadian.

  • I was under the impression that Anna Lee was an acquaintance of all Band members. Remember that Ronnie Hawkins was also from Arkansas, and Robbie spent many years with him. The Band also travelled/toured extensively in the American South. Seems convenient that Helm would mention the three most commercially successful Band songs as ones he contributed to. One can learn historical information about any culture, and write about itpeople do it all the time, especially in music.

  • Yes, Robbie is annoyingly in love with himself and I wish he didn't break up The Band, but the allegations of stolen songwriting credit really don't hold water, if that's what you're referring to. Furthermore, it's clear Robbie genuinely didn't want to keep touring, it's not like his goal was to sabotage the careers of the other guys. Robbie and Levon have their issues, but Garth still collaborates with him from time to time, and both Manuel and Danko did as well prior to their deaths.

  • Why do people think he was such an asshole? He is a great composer though.

  • yes because robbie robertson is just as evil as adolf hitler

  • OOH the negative people who commented on this video are drunks and losers who NEED to shut the f up and just listen, that's why you're dumbass, cuz you cant shut the hell up long enough to LEARN, anything.

  • Beautiful piece of work....just enjoy it !

  • How so? Do you know him personally?

  • Love this Native singer hes awesome and he sings from the heart

  • so nice, i love this song

  • this is os BEAUTIFUL !

  • Great video... thanks for uploading!!

  • it's about richard manuel

  • This is beautiful ... love this song ... also, love "Sweet Fire of Love".

  • Great song.. .Philbert 's... Protector The War Pony. Powwow Highway I just luv that movie

  • I love this song as well, but did all of you miss that this was written about Richard Manuel? He was a member of the Band and committed suicide.

  • I never knew of this video...But listening to the album back then, hearing this song and seeing the video....It matches beautifully!

I bought the album on cassette...waaaay back but i am going to buy the CD...

  • Hmmm, I can clearly hear the Martin Page influence...

Never knew Robbie himself was such a good composer, hat off for you!

  • Comment removed

  • I like the part where he sings "come down Gabriel and blow your horn" with Peter Gabriel singing backup

  • SO BEAUTIFUL i LOVE MY HERITAGE !

  • You probably shouldn't you dirty bogin

  • Wasn't this on the Pow Wow Highway soundtrack? It sounds eeringly familiar.

  • Yes when Philbert goes to buy a pony...

what a great film that is!

  • This has always been my favorite of Robbie's songs. But it has a very Gabrielesque finish, especially with Manu Katché's distinct, and unmistakable, drumming.

I don't hear much Lanois in this at all, but then again, I have done very little listening to U2's post early 80s material.

    Great video, thanks for posting!

  • I always LOVED this song, too. I just read that it was an homage to Richard Manuel. So freaking beautiful.

Peace & the Blues in NYC *;*

It's true...the video does enhance it. Thanks so much for posting.

  • Listen to this song on good headphones and hear all the sonic landscapes-a masterpiece. Brillantly produced by Robbie and Daniel Lanois (U2's producer as well). Also, listen to Robbie's great record Storyville.

  • That was the answer i've been looking for.."The sonic landscapes"

You can hear Daniel Lanois's sound very good in " Sweet fire of love "..( and Bono's vocals )

  • This song steals my soul...so beauteous, and the vid, only enhances it. Thank you. namaste. Aho

  • What a great fucking song!

  • To me this song and the entire album are so under-rated. The album would easily make my all time top ten list of rock'n'roll albums. The writing, the recording and sonic texture is just amazing. And just as I like Don Henley's solo work better than I like the Eagles, I like Robbie's solo work better than his work in the Band. I think it and Storyville show an artist at the top of his game.

  • Couldn't agree more. This is one of my favorite albums of all time. When people ask, "What's your favorite film?" I mention this album: it creates such great images and tells, to me, a modern, classic, American story. Which is ironic, considering Robbie is Canadian.

  • But mostly Mohawk from his mothers side.. long before there was a line between the USA and Canada.

  • And with the completely awesome Manu Katche on drums...

The guest artist lineup on the album is off the hook... U2, Gabriel, Terry Bozzio, Tony Levin, etc etc etc

  • thx for the info which would never ever reach holland

  • That would be Brian Auger

  • THANKS YOUTUBE! troglatite

  • RIP RICHARD MANUEL GOD LVES YOU

  • it is Peter you see him at mark 1:57 and then 2:07

  • This is a wonderful song, you don't see him on the video, but the ghostly sound of Peter Gabriel's voice is in the background. I love this song!

  • thx robbie and do not worry fans of the band never ever forget richard.

  • You know what would make this better?...Add a kind of half-shuffle-half-straight time beat to it...ya...then add some jackhammer fretless bass to it...ya that's awesome...okay now let's find a guy who plays the organ that sounds like ten guys playing organ...there...now some kickass rhythem piano...there....that's much better.

  • Hey, and maybe one--no, three! great singers, too.

  • Sigh...

  • is Robbie doing the vocal on this song that sounds so much like Manuel?

  • Think thats Peter Gabriel

  • It's Daniel Lanois, but does sound a lot like PG.

  • If I may correct myself, that is Peter Gabriel, Daniel Lanois does backing vocals on other tracks off this album, got it mixed up.

  • I heard of it some time ago when looking at Martin Page video promos for his new joint "Temple of the Muse"...and read about it too...

  • How come I never heard this joint as a kid?

    (In the 90's)

I am not sure (Cuz I was young then) but was American radio just as mainstream THEN as it is NOW?

  • Heard of this joint! Nice!:D

  • love this song have been listing to it ever since i found it on here have never heard it before i found it on youtube thanks for posting it.

  • What a wonderful song...

  • Thank you!

  • Robbie Robertson is a POPULARLY UNDER-APPRECIATED tremendous talent!

People miss so much when they waste precious time on nothings like Britney Spears, when they could instead be appreciating REAL TALENT!!! Robbie Robertson is truly amazing!

    He deserves more respect.

  • Beautiful said, He is true folk singer that sings from his heart glad you found this music

  • Amen! Robertson is godly.

  • Yeah that's great music. Listened to "Somewhere down the crazy river" on the radio today. It made me want to go back in time to that great album. I think it was the same where this song is on. Wonderful sound. Isn't that Manu Katché drumming, who (apart from working with everybody in the biz) also worked with Peter Gabriel?

  • I miss you cut finger

  • listen we have a voice I m so tierd of of beinging " Kocked blocked

  • I like the part where he sings "come down Gabriel and blow your horn" with Peter Gabriel singing backup

  • I had no problem posting comments before, why are my comments 'pending approval'? This pisses me off!

  • Me too!!I have sent 3 in and they all got locked into something.Keep posting something s gotta give.My comments were a bit edgy maybe he does not want them on line...this is pretty scared music I see the point God Bless

  • sensorship

  • It's all in the arrangement!

  • wunderbar - wenn ich nur soviel englisch könnte, um den text zu verstehen.

  • not being able to Embed this makes me depressed

  • cant get this out of my head...been listening to it for like 2 days straight, so awsome

  • great isnt it.

  • what is this song about?

  • I think its a person who fell and saved through the birth of a child very sacred

  • thx robbie do not forget holland still loves richard manual, great song if i go by plane i allways listen to this song by the take off.

  • Thank you Robbie for this song.

  • a touching song and wonderful video. As I understand, he wrote the song in tribute to Richard Manuel an original member of the Band on his passing.

  • He had actually already written the song, but then dedicated it to Richard Manuel when he recorded it, sad for Richard....powerful song, incredible lyrics...

  • amazing

  • I love Robbie robertson. His songs are powerful

  • love ya guys billings scotts bluff reedpoint big timber spear fish lead

  • What could possibly be better than Robbie Robertson, Peter Gabriel and Martin Page altogether? What a touching song.

  • Peter Gabriel alone ...

  • amazing!dont forget Daniel Lanois!

  • Great tribute to Richard Manuel

  • Robbie makes a clear departure from his glory days with THE BAND and charts his own ground with a little help from his friends. Folks like Peter Gabriel, U-2, the Bo-Deans, as well as a couple of his old BANDmates take the trip with him in own musical vacuum.

  • Great song by Robbie & Gabriel .

  • mabe I am using this site to find an old friend hope you dont mind this song is very special

  • gabby its me Ive been looking for you since scotts bluff

  • all the tears,,,all the rage,,, all the blues in the night,,,cast a shadow against the sun if our eyes could see the spirit of the CHOSEN ONE

  • This song was in the movie Pow-Wow Highway. It was a great movie that not many people knew about. Philbert stands at the top of Black Hiils when they play this song.

  • play the whale song

  • wish I could find cut foot

  • send ablessing to gemni girl

  • beautiful

  • Ill try to up load buffy saint marie I think youll like her thank you have a blessed day

  • What a pretty song. I like the message and the also the video.

Thanks for sharing it with me, LaFemmeX. xo

  • song was written for Richard Manuel who hung himself in 1986 and was a member of The Band with Robbie

  • Beautiful!

  • Great song...Great album! Dediated to Dana Plato..."Gotta play the hand that's dealt ya" .. RIP Dana - God bless you

  • iedere keer als ik naar indonesie ga met het vliegtuig is dit het eerste liedje waar ik naar luister.

  • This is just an all around fantastic song. Never get tired of the way it makes me feel.

  • kudos to daniel lanois who helped take robbie robertson, peter gabriel and U2 to higher levels

  • enjoy...

  • we need another Ghost dance now!

  • Peter Gabriel is the voice in the backing vocals, and he is the one who composed all of that really great looping with the sampled sounds and synths... UMG needs to "edumacate" somebody a little bit before they start listing credits for artists.

  • Actually, Daniel Lanois had a lot to do with the production.

  • robbie's best ever song.

  • Yeah, beautiful song.

But what means that vid to Richard, I wonder?

Is he reborn as the baby, that would be great...

Go and listen to the Counting Crows.

They also cry it out loud:

If I Could Give All My Love -Or-

    Richard Manuel Is Dead

    God bless Richard Manuel.

  • THIS IS WONDERFUL....Beautiful....I LOVE IT.

  • A truly ultruistic human being, Robbie Rrobwertson has very emotional and powerful message for all those who listen, and not just hear! The sadness and desecration of the

  • Great video of a great song.

I have all of Robbie Robertson's solo work.

    Surrealistic...

  • i thank U2 for me getting into robbie (and the band), i was an obsessive U2 fan back in 1987 and when i heard they were on his lp, i got it immediately.

  • Was writing to someone else on YouTube last week and used the expression, 'You have to play the hand that's dealt you,' but couldn't remember where it came from. Just realised this is where it came from! :)

  • Voltare

  • I have to highlight Daniel Lanois here. He's known mostly for his producing credits for U2, Peter Gabriel, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson and this album by Robbie Robertson.

He's a Canadian musician that a lot of people don't know about, but everyone who loves good organic music like this should own Daniel Lanois' latest two albums named Shine and Belladonna. Excellent and earthy.

  • The whole vid. is beautiful! Death is life in the circle according to Robbie's Spirituality and many Native Cultures. Tragic, yes that Richard took his own life, Robbie paid this incredible tribute to him. The symbols in this, each musical note, the haunting backgrounds, the singers...and the indigenous people, wow, wow and wow!

  • One of Manu Katché's best drum work imo.

  • RIP Richard Manuel, one of the greats

  • The chick at 1:05 totally makes my pants shrink.

    Oh...Martin Page rules.

  • who is Martin Page? Peter Gabriel sings back-up vocals on this song. i love this song, but since it's about the suicide of Richard Manuel, i think it's kind of...commercial for UMG to make it look sexy. even though the sexy chick is giving birth in a vision.

  • Martin Page is a mostly christian/rock singer, or at least that's how he gets tagged. He had a couple hits a few years ago with "the House of Stone and Light".

  • Listening to this makes me wonder why Robbie hardly ever sang with The Band. I know they had 3 incredible vocalists, but even so Rick Danko was always after him to sing more.

  • Beautiful!

  • well im thankful for robbie writing this song

    it help throughlife

  • FOR RICHARD OF THE BAND FROM ROBBIE

  • wow.
