I am so grateful that I was able to be there for this. Even after all these years, I still meet people who were there that night and it's agreed upon...it was one of the most amazing experiences we had ever been a part of. We all have special moments that come around every once in a while, sometimes were not even looking when it happens. Radiohead at Bonnaroo was one of those moments for me...
Only Radiohead could a make a song that orginally was deeply sad & beautiful & then complete turn it upside down & make it so deeply euthoric & beautiful...
@bingstar316 You should note that this concert was way before In Rainbows album was even released. Perhaps they weren't sure yet whether this song should be more depressing, or more energetic. I like the sad version better, it is more fitting to the lyrics.
I used to be into this coldplay sucks radiohead rocks etc bullshit - but then i relistened to Parachutes and Rush of Blood to the Head and realised I was being shallow and that there's room enough for both. After all, no Coldplay means no Spies and that's a top quality song.
@ChrisPeel2k Those are the only 2 good albums Coldplay has. They don't sound like Radiohead's High And Dry, they sound like Jeff Buckley and they sound like britpop. Anyways, yeah. There's room for both.
@ChrisPeel2k I couldn't agree more. I just saw Coldplay live last weekend, best fucking concert ever! I've love them since Parachutes, and I was only 3 haha So 13 years later, I finally saw them. And hearing the 55,000 person crowd sing every lyric to every song, was perfect! But I still love Radiohead. They're both very different bands. They're similar, but in the way Kings of Leon and My Morning Jacket are.
myvideostand, many good songs can be performed differently. The problem for most bands is that they just can't balance the bare bones of the tune! Radiohead are masters of production and use all their expertise with various instruments to create something unique and original. If you isolate the vocal in this tune and changed the tempo you could create a Coldplay esque no. It's the music which makes it special. Agree with me or not but I can perform this song a thousand different ways in my mind
Coldplay is cheap sentimental bullshit, it has no core, no guts, no soul. Radiohead provokes emotions through intelligent and conceptually beautiful, soulful music. I'll leave Coldplay for the emotionally underdeveloped 16 year olds.
i get what you're saying about the "feel", correctly stated, coldplay is the band that has the radiohead feel, that being said, doesn't that make them both great?! lmao
@bsquared4444 I think radiohead has more musicality than coldplay. Radiohead just has the staying power of stanely kubrick and gordon parks. Neither musicians but i think you follow me. Masters of their craft. Coldplay is fading while radiohead stays relevent.
Por q ..... cambiaron de version , esta es mil veces mejor q la de ahora , le falta el sonido q le da Jonny :( .... Si alguien de la Banda lee esto (no creo) vuelvan a esta version porfa :(
I miss my hometown Nashville...sooo much...can't wait to come back...I miss Bonnaroo Festival the most.....God and radiohead man....their just epic.....
I love this band and the song is sublime. Every once in a while you get a band or an artist that really changes things, and this is one of them. BTW If you like this check out my music, it has a similar kind of vibe.
i felt the same way. radiohead has a tendency to post-modernize the rock song as we know it. to me, this version, while rock-ier, is already unconventional and brilliant. when i listen to the album version, i feel i'm listening to a song that is unsure of itself and is safely experimental. i saw this version live at auditorium theatre in chicago in '06. was heartbroken when i heard the ablum version.
Its almost two different songs - the original, I think, captures the melancholy and the sort off "sweet bitternes" in the lyrics - albeit this one, with its loud and more grandiose soundscape, gives a more urgent and commanding sensation. If I had to choose - I would stick with the original - it's just more composed and "finished" - naturally.
i think the reason they cut out this whole dramatic ending from the album version is cuz they wanted a more soothing, emotional version, but i think this one here absolutely blows it away!
They actually tried to have it similar to this, with all kinds of layered instruments, vocals etc., but they weren't having any luck. Everyone got pissed off and Thom left the studio, and when he came back a few hours later Jonny and Nigel Godrich had cut it all down to what you hear on the album, and they thought it was beautiful like that.
that is interesting- I really appreciate bands that kind of interpret their own songs in different ways- In Rainbows has many songs that evolved over the years into what they are now. I gotta say that this version is amazing and powerful but I am sure I would love any version of this song from the boys cuz I love them to death.
@bensley56 T.A.T.R. is a collection of live shows, unreleased music, remixes, and older, alternate versions of songs such as 'Nude,' 'Up On the Ladder,' and 'Motion Picture Soundtrack.' So, to answer your question, yes; it's definitly worth checking out.
I just love it when Jonny goes nuts with the guitar like here and in the studio version of fog and all that energy is transmitted through my ears and transformed into an unbearable desire of tearing the skin off. Damn, sometimes that makes me stop the music!
the drums are so much better in the live performances + added guitar is ridiculous! Need a studio version of this... The one on in rainbows lacks. Great song none the less.
@TheRishiGirl thx for this, the tempo is much faster live I believe but still a great kit for the drums matches perfect. Is there a soundboard version of this available?
@TheRishiGirl sorry I ment a soundboard of videotape with the full band not the recreated studio version. Only thing I could find was the one from 2008 and of course they are playing the dumbed down eerie version. That recreated studio version is growing on me though. So the vocals and piano he used were from 'Live in the Basement'? pretty good.
@TheRishiGirl lol boo all you want but thats what they did to it. 2 of them were in the studio one day and they had removed almost the entire mix and they liked the haunting eerie sound better than the studio version of this. I like both I just prefer this one.
just as long as you guys understand thom is not religious. Thom also wrote pyramid...Thom was also in the video there there.. atheism is not evil, and thom has helped me understand that there are beautiful things in religion that even atheists can admire
Wow, amazing version, Johhny is absolutely on fire, the whole band totally in tune and on time, but nothing like the recorded version. Best performance I've seen for a long time!
god this was the highlight for me, i was at Edingburgh 06 when i 1st saw them and i had never heard it before, goosebumps and shivers big time, wish this version was recorded instead of IN Rainbows album version
Certainly this is a beautiful version of the song, but don't discount the album version. This has the added build-up, kind of gives a "Godspeed You Black Emperors" vibe, whereas the album is completely minimalistic, which to me is far more appropriate for the theme of the song.
Both are not only listenable pieces, but 'MUST-listen to' works that have their own appeals. So I'd say they did the right thing with each version, and kept them in their right places.
its amazing how radiohead can take the skeleton of a song like videotape and make it so different in different instances. this version is rocks more, the album version is more emotional, and the version from the basement is great even though it is just thom and a piano. all verisons are equally brilliant, which goes to show that versatility is yet another word to describe radiohead.
I know, i agree. I think this was when they were touring the pre in rainbows album. I got the impression that they were undecided on the final version. As i haven't heard this version repeated. Which is a shame i it does rock!
Well, Radiohead told Nigel what to do. But I do think the production of the album could have been better. This video is a very good example of how it could've been better.
i dont want to get in an argument here and this is just my 2 cents. but i believe radiohead have this large burden forever on their heads to be completely original in what they do, but particularly in arrangement. this version, as brilliant as it is, has the whole coldplay feel. and the album version and since has been more original
oh yeah im not saying radiohead copy coldplay at all. obviously its the other way round. listen to the drum intro on in my place and high and dry. or the chord sequence on lift and yellow. and thats just for starters. i just felt that this version, as great as it is, isnt radiohead enough. whereas the album version was something pretty special
i really don't think this version of the song has a coldplay feel to it whatsoever, nor does the song itself in general regardless of the version. radiohead's music tends to be much more searching, deep, and comparatively abstract when compared to coldplay's radio-friendly (which is NOT a bad thing) and upbeat patterns
lyrically its much more searching than anything of coldplays and the lyrics were kept. ed's sampling/looping didnt have the feel of coldplay and was kept. jonnys guitar wasnt original and was dropped. the cliche bridge going up and down the scale was dropped. these were areas altered during the studio because they made it more original. i feel the coldplay feel to it comes from this largely unoriginal arrangement, and the easy 3 chord cycle of A C# and E. i do love this version though :)
@likespinningcreeps Radiohead came before coldplay so how can it have a coldplay 'feel'? You've got it wrong. This song has a Radiohead feel that Coldplay has copied for several years.
:) a lot of radiohead songs are better live. It's probably exactly how they want it. I prefer it over ppl whining about how they can't do any of their studio stuff properly on a stage.
Like Spinning plates is another fine example of that.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I wasn't impressed with what they did on the album with this song. They completely bi-passed the rock out part. too slow. this version is great though.
I fully agree, I can't even listen to the album version. It's the only Radiohead song I actually find somewhat depressing.
This version, however, is amazing. Really wish they would've stuck this style in the studio with Nigel. Oh well, still by and large the best band in the world. Can't wait for the next album...rumor has it they're recording it atm?
miles better than the In Rainbows version...in my opinion... I saw this live in Edinburgh and was blown away..way more emotional and the build up is awesome!
i agree modelio1986 i think this version is much better than in rainbows.i remeber hearing it live in dublin three years ago and the crowd were in awe-amazing stuff
'this is better than that...i wish it were this way.." the fact is our opinions are besides the point. They are the geniuses and i just sit back and jam out whatever they feel they need to jam. it's all good if you ask me.
I was in the Rio de Janeiro 2009 concert and this song sounded really amazing, it was so "oniric" and minimalistic..........I love it so much........but this bonaro version has a special environment with Jonny's guitar that he replaces with the piano............Thank you Melissa, very good video¡¡
So was I! Best show I've ever seen. I still love the album version but there's a 'rising' in this version that's like nothing I've ever heard... but I'll take 'em any way I can get 'em.
could have been in their top 5 songs ever had they recorded it this way. unfortunately this song will always be tainted with the disappointment of the album version.
Meh... The album contributed to a whole as in this version (as I do appreciate more as a single) doesn't/ wouldn't give the same effect. I remember hearing the album version with disappointment and slowly realizing the intensity and deep emotion thom put during the recording of that song.
I completely agree. I heard the song on Nigel Godrich's show and was bowled over just Thom and piano.
Then heard this version, then the In Rainbows and I understand completely why they chose the album version.
But to be honest, this version is amazing. It is probably in my top 3 of all time songs. The euphoric ending is just genius. Feels like you're being ascended on a high rather than a low.
While this is indeed an amazing performance and I love Jonny's additions, I think the album version serves the song's lyrics and vibe a little better, and makes a perfect album closer. That said, I'd definitely rather hear this version live for sure.
My interpretation of the song is that he is remembering this perfect day he had with his love and even when he dies and sees his life flash by he'll never forget that day and he will always treasure it <3 beautiful
isnt it ridiculous to think about, certain impulses have different aesthetic values into which we deem onto one end of the spectrum or the other, harmonic or dissonant, i guess in the end it all has to do with our natural vibration, whats harmonious to our being or not, but then again what we may find harmonious may be dissonant to others vice versa, life is just beauty in itself
by the way, i dont know why you guys are talking about tv's haha, your eyes have 3 cones that separate light, red blue green, the videotape hes talking about is your own memory, deciphering all the waves of color through 3 hues and saturations, red blue green, thats why he says when hes at the pearly gates, seeing all your memories etc. Simple, yet complex, so beautiful, i've thought about this concept for a while, how we're all in one beautiful hologram recording life subjectively in way
or, similar to how we "hear" music, light, just like sound, is a series of electrical impulses translated by our brain into what we then humanistically deem beautiful, pleasing or ugly. I think this song is trying to get at the ephemoral nature of music, art, and what makes it beautiful. I think thats why its at the end of the album, or why its developed so slowly as a piece. Who really knows. Great song
I think the interpretation is more to the effect that after he's dead and "at the pearly gates" he'll be saying goodbye through the videotape that he left. He says "this is my way of saying goodbye, cause I can't to it face to face so I'm talking to you from my videotape." It's like a recording he made of himself on the day he died for his loved ones. It also seems that he's saying that someones last day on earth is the most beautiful because its when you realize how lucky you are to have lived.
i wish they released an album version of THIS VERSION of videotape. with guitar, bass, drums.. the whole band playing. this is sweet.

its amazing how radiohead can take the skeleton of a song like videotape and make it so different in different instances. this version is rocks more, the album version is more emotional, and the version from the basement is great even though it is just thom and a piano. all verisons are equally brilliant, which goes to show that versatility is yet another word to describe radiohead.

I know, i agree. I think this was when they were touring the pre in rainbows album. I got the impression that they were undecided on the final version. As i haven't heard this version repeated. Which is a shame i it does rock!

In Rainbows should have been their best album but Nigel fucked up. That's what I think
StudioGuyMN 2 years ago
Well, Radiohead told Nigel what to do. But I do think the production of the album could have been better. This video is a very good example of how it could've been better.

i dont want to get in an argument here and this is just my 2 cents. but i believe radiohead have this large burden forever on their heads to be completely original in what they do, but particularly in arrangement. this version, as brilliant as it is, has the whole coldplay feel. and the album version and since has been more original
likespinningcreeps 2 years ago 2
Yea, I know. I just love what Jonny Greenwood is doing here.
LILTRUCKER123 2 years ago 3
i agree sort of, but coldplay has copied off radiohead from the start, not the other way around.
PhilEliasIsGnarly 2 years ago 2
oh yeah im not saying radiohead copy coldplay at all. obviously its the other way round. listen to the drum intro on in my place and high and dry. or the chord sequence on lift and yellow. and thats just for starters. i just felt that this version, as great as it is, isnt radiohead enough. whereas the album version was something pretty special
i too love jonny on this vid :-)
likespinningcreeps 2 years ago
i really don't think this version of the song has a coldplay feel to it whatsoever, nor does the song itself in general regardless of the version. radiohead's music tends to be much more searching, deep, and comparatively abstract when compared to coldplay's radio-friendly (which is NOT a bad thing) and upbeat patterns
kennedy727272 2 years ago 4
lyrically its much more searching than anything of coldplays and the lyrics were kept. ed's sampling/looping didnt have the feel of coldplay and was kept. jonnys guitar wasnt original and was dropped. the cliche bridge going up and down the scale was dropped. these were areas altered during the studio because they made it more original. i feel the coldplay feel to it comes from this largely unoriginal arrangement, and the easy 3 chord cycle of A C# and E. i do love this version though :)
likespinningcreeps 2 years ago
@likespinningcreeps Radiohead came before coldplay so how can it have a coldplay 'feel'? You've got it wrong. This song has a Radiohead feel that Coldplay has copied for several years.

@JMullown they're both amazing!

@bsquared4444 We can agree to disagree.

:) a lot of radiohead songs are better live. It's probably exactly how they want it. I prefer it over ppl whining about how they can't do any of their studio stuff properly on a stage.
Like Spinning plates is another fine example of that.
This version of Videotape is awesome.

I wasn't impressed with what they did on the album with this song. They completely bi-passed the rock out part. too slow. this version is great though.
kevin122100 2 years ago
I fully agree, I can't even listen to the album version. It's the only Radiohead song I actually find somewhat depressing.
This version, however, is amazing. Really wish they would've stuck this style in the studio with Nigel. Oh well, still by and large the best band in the world. Can't wait for the next album...rumor has it they're recording it atm?

miles better than the In Rainbows version...in my opinion... I saw this live in Edinburgh and was blown away..way more emotional and the build up is awesome!

I still love the album version but there's a 'rising' in this version that's like nothing I've ever heard... but I'll take 'em any way I can get 'em.

this performance is perfect; I really do favour this over the album version but the album version is great in a whole other way

could have been in their top 5 songs ever had they recorded it this way. unfortunately this song will always be tainted with the disappointment of the album version.

Meh... The album contributed to a whole as in this version (as I do appreciate more as a single) doesn't/ wouldn't give the same effect. I remember hearing the album version with disappointment and slowly realizing the intensity and deep emotion thom put during the recording of that song.
ervenegille 2 years ago
I completely agree. I heard the song on Nigel Godrich's show and was bowled over just Thom and piano.
Then heard this version, then the In Rainbows and I understand completely why they chose the album version.
But to be honest, this version is amazing. It is probably in my top 3 of all time songs. The euphoric ending is just genius. Feels like you're being ascended on a high rather than a low.
challend 2 years ago 2
Simply a much better version than the In Rainbows one: No doubt whatsoever.
You almost wish you could have shown the band this version right before they recorded the In Rainbows one, wonder if it might have made a difference.
philsynth 2 years ago 5
While this is indeed an amazing performance and I love Jonny's additions, I think the album version serves the song's lyrics and vibe a little better, and makes a perfect album closer. That said, I'd definitely rather hear this version live for sure.

My interpretation of the song is that he is remembering this perfect day he had with his love and even when he dies and sees his life flash by he'll never forget that day and he will always treasure it <3 beautiful

isnt it ridiculous to think about, certain impulses have different aesthetic values into which we deem onto one end of the spectrum or the other, harmonic or dissonant, i guess in the end it all has to do with our natural vibration, whats harmonious to our being or not, but then again what we may find harmonious may be dissonant to others vice versa, life is just beauty in itself
miloko10 2 years ago
by the way, i dont know why you guys are talking about tv's haha, your eyes have 3 cones that separate light, red blue green, the videotape hes talking about is your own memory, deciphering all the waves of color through 3 hues and saturations, red blue green, thats why he says when hes at the pearly gates, seeing all your memories etc. Simple, yet complex, so beautiful, i've thought about this concept for a while, how we're all in one beautiful hologram recording life subjectively in way
miloko10 2 years ago 2
or, similar to how we "hear" music, light, just like sound, is a series of electrical impulses translated by our brain into what we then humanistically deem beautiful, pleasing or ugly. I think this song is trying to get at the ephemoral nature of music, art, and what makes it beautiful. I think thats why its at the end of the album, or why its developed so slowly as a piece. Who really knows. Great song
dannyjack982 2 years ago 3
I think the interpretation is more to the effect that after he's dead and "at the pearly gates" he'll be saying goodbye through the videotape that he left. He says "this is my way of saying goodbye, cause I can't to it face to face so I'm talking to you from my videotape." It's like a recording he made of himself on the day he died for his loved ones. It also seems that he's saying that someones last day on earth is the most beautiful because its when you realize how lucky you are to have lived.
