Is that normal?! I've seen a load of British diesel lokos lately and pretty much all of them seem to produce incredible amounts of clagg and smoke. Impressive alright, but for instance the German class 218 is nothing close to that, not even with the old MTU and Pielstick engines (which had to be replaced exactly because of that) and those babies are some 40 years old as well...
Even taking maintenance, cold weather and everything into consideration, it just looks weird to me
Normal passenger service speed, 125mph, but one of these locomotives holds the world Diesel power train speed record of 148mph. (this was set in 1988, along the same stretch of line that "Mallard" did her record breaking run back in 1939)
It was a cold start yes - but some of the "clag" effect was a combination of fading light making the smoke look darker, and the cold air (it was November). It started first time - twas me in the seat at the time!
@Sephy69 Well now they've got the MTUs (new engines) fitted they tend to run a bit smoother, don't forget that Valentas have been running for over 30 years :P
Perhaps there would be Napier Turbocharger fans as well - these are what cause the high-pitched scream. It doesn't sound similar with MTUs because the turbochargers are different!
where did those old 125's go that used to frighten the living hell out of me when i was a boy as the left the end of the platform.
the best memories ever taking the train from say swindon to paington this route is one of my favs.
uk trains today for me dont make me feel as interested as before but still love them

Oh aren't the MTU's so crap and sound rubbish too lol. Nothing like the sound of a Valenta.
Now I'll get the MTU fans moaning at me lol

No you won't, there aren't many, and most of them (me included) still prefer the sound of a Valenta! :D

The dad should have kept the kid inside to be part of the action! Unless he was worried about the sudden vibration scaring the kid.
