Regarding the money motivation exercise. Would she have truly been trying her very best to stay awake during that exercise?

I've always understood that someone can't be hypnotized against their will, and $100, though not an immense motivator as you pointed out, surely would have been motivation enough to take on the apparently easy exercise of resisting 'sleep'? The example I chose may seem trivial but I'm curious nonetheless.
