Im too young to appreciate the talent of Japan and Nick Karn, but the sound of midge ure lives on. hearing all these appearances of doing good causes i love Mick.RIP.
Great song. Great sentiment. Why try and get "Vienna" to number 1 when this masterpiece is deserved of global No.1 status - especially with Mick in one of his typically brilliant yet understated perfromances. Oh, I could cry....
I spent some time with Mark Brzezicki last weekend and found the least egotistical person I'd ever met - he is firstly a drummer - he showed me this on his I-Phone with one purpose - showing me his Red Pearl Kit!!! never mind that it was with Midge, Mick and Phil at Wembley etc etc that was secondary! - Mark blew me away with his friendship!!!
@billyconnearly Yes he is definitely one hell of a nice guy...I was at their 25th anniversary tour with big country in cologne back in 2007....he actually gave me one drum stick from the concert....its hanging in a frame now above my drumkit...love this guy....
@trinzeon - I actually thought Collins didn't make a mistake and played as well as any of the other musos. Perhaps you can enlighten us as to how he ruined it. Please explain in musical terms so we can understand that your criticism is based on an understanding of technique and ability as opposed to the fact that you simply don't like his music.
@Chris51 He made the drums far more prominent at every available opportunity, with fills that did not fit the song (in my view), starting at 1:01. It has nothing to do with liking Phil Collin's music. As a musician, I have played bass for over 35 years, including countless hours in studio, and have an aversion to the oft natural inclinations of rythym sections to overplay. If you remember this timeframe, Phil was a superstar (the only one to play at 2 Live Aid events). He wanted that shown.
@Chris51 And would say that, in 'musical terms', you know there is a difference between a mistake, and overplaying or playing out of context ;-) Google 'Drummer jokes' or the legendary 'Steely Dan things not to say in the studio' and you will see what I mean.
Great song from the film, Dear God. Does anyone know the song at the end that says, "Hold On, an Angels Gonna Find you someday".. Who sings that one??
It is indeed the amazing Mick Karn on bass. Mick discusses being asked by Ure to play at this concert in his fascinating autobiography 'Japan & Self Existence' which is a must read for any Japan fan. Sadly Mick is fighting with serious illness at the moment.....I wish him strenght in this difficult time.
This song has a such a wonderful feel to it. Last night this song was played at Rochester Square Spiritualist Church in Camden and prayers were sent out to Chilie.
The sub plot here is that Brzezicki had said in an interview that the best drumming he had ever seen was Collins playing live with Brand X. Brzezicki was technically the better, but Collins has the better ear for what works, perhaps the best ever. Listen to the way Collin's "fill ins" don't end at the end of the bar as they should, but instead follow the brass line like a big band drummer. In terms of doing a simple thing that works, this is one of my favourite bits of pop drumming ever.
phil is the best with his breaks, drums fills and feeling

man, he can sing. Probably one of the best singers ever. Him and Roger Hodgson. Top class.

Brzezicki is still playing those same drums today. They sound fantastic live after all this time.

Ahhhh!!! Another beautiful song ruined by the Phil Collins treatment - 'look at me' drumming and cliched horns. Sorry Midge

Mark is the best drummer i have ever known. Phil Collins knew that. Thats why Phil invited him. Great to see this again.

Midge, you are the best star of all the time!
The Voice, the Style, the Personality..
If I had been a girl, I would probably fallen in love with you. But I have been impressed with your music for so long..
Chapeau bas!
