I ordinarily agree with many of Tom Scharpling's opinions about music. I think that he has good taste. But I think that he is dead wrong about Tom Waits. There was a stretch of time during the 80s when no one in the world was producing better albums than Tom Waits. Scharpling's criticism of him seems to center around the fact that Waits always seems to be playing some sort of "character," but that's a rather strange criticism coming from a big fan of 70s-era David Bowie.
