  • His tone is godlike but I don't think I'll ever be fully "in" to DT. The vocals ruin it for me :o( The liquid Tension Experiment albums are amazing though and, in my opinion, have petrucci's best playing on. I am a guitar player do I'm a little bias towards instrumental music. The dream theatre instrumental breaks rock too but as I said LeBrie ruins the awesomeness for me. Big respect to all the DT guys though. They are a talented bunch of musicians who will supply me with jealousy for years to

  • This tour was my favorite of his tones of all time

  • Can you stop comparing God to Petrucci? cause God is nothing like....Petrucci.

  • Does he not use a tap tempo on delays?

  • @Bflatest He has them preset for each song

  • "so I try not to stop *killing*"

  • Dont look john petrucci, bis as ferrigno or schwarzenegger?

  • nowadays, buy an axe fx and a power amp. sorted haha

  • amazing tone for one of the top guitarrist of all time, does any one knows how much I should pay for a brand new mark V in USA?

  • @andres1203ecuador 2099 new, 1700 or so used, regards

  • @idkthisisthirdtry Thanks man!

  • @andres1203ecuador Around 2,500

  • omg, i don't fucking care about your pedal board that only you can afford. Just show me all the other shit i can't afford either already. fuckkkk

  • Its all organized wow

  • Awesome gear, that's a cool push button setup

  • Octavarium Solo!!

  • And it's not that complex of a setup, looks like attention was focused on keeping the signal as clean a possible. For example, the signal doesn't always go through the Wah, as he says, it's rackmounted and switchable. If anything it's a very nice switching system, this is far more complex than what was available in the 60s and 70s. The effects he has are HQ 96Khz frequencies, some of the best currently available, though most people still go WET/DRY/WET to keep that pure center tone. Best way.

  • Whenever he hits a note, about a thousand lights jumps on his rack gear. Sounds very modern, indeed. But, I keep wondering do guitarists really need all this stuff to sound good, when history prooved that yo can really make magic with just a guitar, a proper amp and no more than few pedals ( Hendrix, May, Page, Blackmore, Marino, Beck, Halen, even early Yngwie.... you name 'em. ).

  • @kizonni Oh there were way more than a few pedals there dude. If anything it's gotten simpler. There is one rack box now, instead of a chain of pedals, that lets you plug those pedals in ANY way you imagine, over and over, and save them to presets. Not much has changed. We're still using tube amps for crying out loud. If you plug just a guitar into an amp... you get less than Hendrix,Page, etc. They had all the toys too. Who you kiddin?

  • Does anybody know all the delay settings for "Another Day"?

    intro

    chorus

    solo

    thanks.

  • what's the estimate grand price tag for that rig?

  • PETRUCCI.......my biggest influence

For me you are a GOD...!!!!!

    THANKS FOR MAKE MUSIC

  • pettruci is one of the few guitarists that can play amazing solo's that arent just blisteringly fast!

  • "...if I were to stop at any time I'd get a lot of feedback... so I try not to stop."

  • @YtseJam16 people would die instantly if he were to stop

  • he became bigger through the decades..

  • Outside air...I like that description.

  • John can break me in half.

  • You know that giant digital readout in Union Square in NYC that is constantly counting into the trillions? That's the real time tally of the notes this man plays at any given moment.

  • petrucci . its the best guitar player of world, no dude.END

  • did he say zakk wylde overdrive pedal??

  • "Spell 'God', Timmy."

    "Alright, Mrs. Peters. P-e-t-r-u-c-c-i."

    "Well done, Timmy."

  • @Progehr34 My lord and Saviour right thur

  • so he got a lot of rig things and that pedal on the floor is the "remote"? sorry i dont know what it is

  • @GuitaristEliKing yeah dude, the axess electronics footswitch is a midi controller, he programs the switches to do different things, and when he switches them, the controller sends midi messages to the rack and turns effects on or off

  • Esse cara deveria Falar umas palavrinhas em português pra variar né

    RSRSRSRSR

  • killertone

  • why does John petrucci have a mesa 2:100 poweramp in his rack?

  • that damn in the presence of enemies solo is so freaking perfect. well yeah ok the other solos are also perfect...

  • Comment removed

  • damn he must work out!

  • @FlankinspanK wrong...he WORKS OUT!!!!!

  • i wonder how he gets all his amps into just two cabs!?

  • I have the same amp (mesa IV) as he plays and JP still doesnt inspire me.. He plays way to safe and predictable for my taste

  • "Those have the most gain. In fact they have so much that if I were to stop at any given time, you'd get a lot of feedback...so I try not to stop."

    -John Petrucci

Hahahaha. That last part actually made me laugh a lot. Petrucci kicks serious ass. I like this video. I'm planning on buying a Mark IV

  • damn, i love this note that comes at 2:01

  • I didn't know he used so much delay in his lead settings, cause his fast passages sound very dry on studio albums. I didn't notice that much delay when I saw them last summer either. Hmm...

  • Damn is the cameraguy drunk? This constant waving is so annoying, but I guess he tried to be artsy and failed miserably...

  • damn , playing with shitloads of delay makes playing way more...comfortable/i play better because of it;p

  • 5:26 that's it.

that's all your gear? you don't have too much. xD

  • The distortion are all from amp or from a rack preamp O_O??

  • he gets all his main lead sounds from his amps yes..but if he desires more sound..he uses screamers and preamps.

  • "SO I TRY NOT TO STOP " @ 1:00

    epic lol

  • He could replace his whole rig with only one Axe-FX and it would still sound great.

  • @deliriumtriggered Wouldn't be half as impressive though ;)

  • everything is more expensive in europe - jaguars are more expensive in england than in the US it's absurd

  • cool cool lo mejor que hay

  • Most of the nicest tones I've ever heard in terms of high gain lead come from a Mesa Boogie. It's a shame they're so pricey but Luckily for me I've got a mesa-boogie V-twin preamp and I didn't pay near it's value for it. I'm pretty happy with that :D

  • he was playing the octavarium solo and I was like please don't stop ....do all of it....but then he stopped :-(

  • Funny way to say after showing all that armament like he said "and... that's it!!!! yeah, not much right?

  • 1:33 to 2:18 was amazing

  • that's the man who knows his gadgets

  • what does petruccis shit cost over all approx.? so letz say, the guitar he was just using + all the rac stuff and pedals etc. he showed plus speakers? anyone has an idea?

  • music man guitar=3500euro

    mesa/lonestar=2500euro X2

    mesa/mark iv=3000euro x2

    mesa cabs=1200euro x15

swedish prices its cheaper in usa!

  • + Tc 2290 = 1000 euro

    TC m3000= 2000 euro

    Furman PC = 2000 euro

etc there is plenty stuff i could still mention im guessing euro prices roughly as is live in UK so the prices are slightly different.

I spent about 6k and im not close to some of his sounds if you add all up it will probably come to about 25k euro. and we are talking about having 1 piece of each equimpment... shite huh? :)

  • yeah, but still i would get my dream sound with a roadking head and cab,tc electronic g-system,zakk wylde wha and a jackson sl2h!!!

  • I dont chase his tone anymore its great but there is many other good players that have better tone than Petrucci although i love his sounds xD

  • I find I'm quite close to my dream sound with just a Mark IVa w/EVM 12L, BB pre, Bad Horsie wah, Me50 in the loop (delay, corus, and volume only). Suits my needs fine, but hey, I'm still in high school :P

  • @VanRosaGuitars

    alot of stuff and expensive!!!

  • 3000 euro for a mark IV ??? I picked mine up mint condition for 1450 canadian, you european types get hosed when it comes to god gear :P

  • @VanRosaGuitars

yeah, europe suxx and i live in sweden so its a lot higher taxes and stuff like that!!

  • RECTO

  • This setup as complicated as it looks is actually much simpler than what he used in earlier tours.

I think it won't hurt to replace all these heads and effects with a Triaxis and a G-force.

  • what dose he say at 4:49 - 4:51 ?

    somthing vintage 30's

  • Celestion.

  • celestion...it's a speaker :)

  • Celestion - they are very popular guitar speakers. They are rated for 30 watts which means they distort easily; they are good for crunch and distorted sounds and not bad for clean sounds but there are better choices for clean tones.

  • Celestion Vintage 30s are rated at 60 watts and Mesa Boogie has a special version of the speaker made for them that is rated at 70 watts. They were introduced in 1986 and designed to sound like vintage alnico magnet speakers but using cheaper ceramic magnets and stronger materials to handle more heat and power...

  • @narayan76 interesting yet how do you know all this stuff? i love to learn more about amps and speakers...

  • @nrodri10 I was responding to JWunderli below. I live 20 minutes from the Mesa Boogie factory and know several of the employees. You can also do google searches...

  • @narayan76 Oh I'm sorry man...well when you talking like that i was kinda curious how you knew this stuff....but please answer this question for me....those employees that work in the Mesa Boogie Factory....do they have some sort of degrees? or how do they got that job in there? I sure will...

  • There are better choices for distorted tones too. Especially if it's a new Celestion. :p:

  • john looks like the lion in the wizzard of ozz

  • Wow that so complicated...

  • 3:35 to 3:50 is a dream theater's song?

  • @Break4ever7 no just an improv

  • it's a jam

  • sounds very complicated rig ...

  • 1:32

  • "...so much gain that if i stop i'll get a lot of feedback. so i try not to stop." XDDDD

  • @Ripp3RX hahahahahah

  • He uses a zakk wylde over drive... this surprises me.

  • do you think a nova delay could capture that lead delay sound

  • yes easy! or the DL4 by line 6

  • MESA FTW!

  • I like the fact that he's really organized with his stuff, and that really shows in his live performances.

  • 1:04: 'I try not to stop' lol. epiiiic

  • more like a midi controller

  • What is that giant pedal at the start its huge ?

  • its a swtich system not a pedal!!

  • huh, his rig isn't as complicated as I thought i t was going to be.

  • well great guitarists don't need overly complicated setups to sound great

  • LOL true, but I'd like to see him play through just a crate and a delay pedal and see how that works out.

Actually when I saw him live, it sounded like he was using a billion fx, the room swallowed me with sound, it wasn't even like a guitar at that point.

  • same. i saw them live august 14, 09 (greatest day in my life. i'll never forget)

and not just him, but the whole band just sounded so amazing. i litterally, as dumb as this seems, felt enveloped by the sound. it was a great feeling. its something that can't be understood until experienced. like sex. (although dream theater is better)

  • i don't think I'd go that far lol, but it was something very strange. Although I love Gilbert when I saw him at G3, Petrucci was something different.

  • lol i'd go that far. but i idolize DT so....yeah, i love gilbert and all, but i prefer petrucci too

  • Actually, I still prefer Gilbert, I'm a speed metal freak. I just was caught so off guard by what Petrucci was doing, it was way more than just "shred".

  • the same for me now in sweden 25th of september I have better sound on my amp:D

  • Mate, try sex AND Dream Theater. Fucking awesome.

  • oh fuck yeah. its really funny if the person you with doesn't get dream theater and your doing it to some complicated progressive time signature XD try fucking to the dance of eternity. hilarious

  • Never tried it with something complicated... Maybe next time lol She listens to DT anyway so ya know it'll be interesting...

  • 9/8 time signature i believe? 2 measures of 4/4 with an extra 8th note in the middle lol...i THINK

  • what?

  • tom morello only uses a 50 watt marshall head and 7-8 pedal, and he sound great : D

  • his distortion comes from the heads, not from pedals...hence all of the heads in the rack and the different settings

  • What distortion does he use?

  • he is using mesa boogie amps natural all tube distortion, the Mark IV and he also mentions a Lonestar but think he only uses this on clean. Go into your local music store and ask to try a boogie and then start saving. :)

  • Boss DS-1

  • 4:40 : "The rig is in stereo, so one head for each side" ! It's good to be a R 'n R star !

  • lots of his gear isnt so much about getting a better sound, but rather getting more sounds as well as controll and convenience!

  • young people watching this walk away thinking u need all this gear to play...if u cant sound good goin straight into an ampthen ur heading in wrong direction....john is an incredible player, but man plug straight into ur amp and let ir rock raw style lol

  • well the thing is he barley uses 1/3 of the pedals he has, he really only uses delay, reverb, wah, and the occasional distortion pedal. He also uses the harmonizer he has as well as he explained, otherwise he just goes through different pre-sets like what Jordan Rudess does with hia keyboard.

  • Right at 1:28 when the video changed, he had just said "for the faster passages." the video cut because he shredded and killed the filming guy, so they had to get a different cameraman but they wouldn't show the first guy exploding

  • maybe its because its a video without fraps, you fool. I doubt you sound better than him. He's a great musician and wouldn't leave such a bad sound in his rig.

  • If you couldn't see the joke in that guys post, you have issues man! ;)

  • Wow. Squier strat. Grats. So which one of you is the world famous and one of the most respected guitar players out there?

  • Yes, we are sure a digital transistor amp sounds better than two tube heads. That's why all great guitarists go for your kinda setup... bah...

  • JP Rulz!

  • he uses strings made from a high grade alloy so they don't melt when he shreds 2 billions notes per second and beyond.

I wonder how many people will survive the upcoming DT tour.......

  • man so many things, i cant comprehend his powers ):

  • "They have so much gain that if I were to stop at any given time, I get a lot of feedback, so I try not to stop."

That kind of mentality killed my brother at a Dream Theater concert in 2001, DAMN YOU PETRUCCI!

  • yeah! he just didn't stop shredding.. may your brother rest in peace, he died at the hands of god

  • the guitar is under his chin, looks goofy. But I know that people who play fast like it like that.

  • Technically, everyone's guitar is under their chin...

  • one of the best guitar-sound ever!!!

    but i 8 JP!!! sorry!

  • I love JP...

  • his rig is too complex for me.

  • One of the buttons releases Michael Angelo Batio from the ceiling who comes and slasher your face open with 4 guitars

  • he has one of the most impressive rigs i've ever seen

  • his pedal kill people

  • I'd like a similar rig to that, except with Marshalls instead of Mesa Boogies, that's just a personal thing.

  • you wont get a ballsy tone like JP's

  • I tried a JVM410 two days ago and got a pretty ballsy tone. It sounded pretty close to the Adam Jones of Tool sound. I'm not totally into replicating others' sounds, but they're kind of inspiring.

  • Great sound , i like that Leslie West playing style beefore the Rack description , is just great.

  • the last thing I was expecting to find on a guitar video was a list of facts about bodybuilding! :D

  • Man, that is a sexy rig. I wish I had 3 mesas to push a cab castle like that :(

  • Probably switched to the Mesa Mark V by now.

  • he definitely has, if you have heard "a rite of passage" off of the new album, its a very distinct tone. so much better than systematic chaos, and i loved that tone.

  • i'm pretty sure john was testing some Mark V prototypes on the last tour

  • What are the TC Electronic pieces he has, it cuts in right as he says what they are.

  • T.C. Electronics 2290

    T.C. Electronics M3000

  • Comment removed

  • It's hilarious cause Jp is like the only Guitar virtuoso with huge muscles. Like Joe satriani and Steve vai etc. are really skinny.

It's really funny but awesome cause he's too big to look like a guitar player, but he's like the best of all.

  • What about Steve Morse,lol..Actually John looks bigger, and in my opinion is a much better guitar player..

  • haha yea he sure is blessed

  • Yeah, now that you mention it, JP could probably kick the asses of all of his rival guitar virtuosos. Go Petrucci.

  • All, but not Steve Morse! Even John will say this!

  • He does not use roids. He has been building since 2006.

  • yeah dude, I love JP, and think he always has the sickest rigs on the planet.

But, that kat has to be on steroids... just like George Lynch in the 90's.... and now his fingers suffer!

  • not really. If your totally serious about body building its pretty easy to get to that size in a few years...Especially for someone who is filthy rich like him.

  • fretmunky...

with **heavy** lifting, the avg person can put on 3-5 pounds of muscle a year. With roids, you can double that easily.

To see the gains he has made over the years, it is roids. I would bet money...

you want to take that action! :)

  • it might be a non anabolic steroid like prendisone, he could have gain weight (mass), and a bit of muscle from working out.

hes not jacked, hes just not a skinny bitch anymore

  • The average person can put on much more than 3-5 pounds of muscle a year. I don't know what you've been reading but you're grossly incorrect.

The first year is the easiest to gain mass, then it slows down. But 3-5? Try 10.

  • sorry pal, he has been working out a lot longer than one year.

so yeah, in his first year, he can put on 10. From there on, it is 3-5. Grossly incorrect? Do some research and get back to me.

I will be the guy waiting in the corner to tell you "told ya so!". :)

  • I never said he's only been working out one year, nor did I say the first year's maximum potential is only 10 pounds. I already HAVE researched this issue, because I like bodybuilding.

    I was being lenient.

The myth is between 5-15 pounds per year, but there have been people that have done 20-25 pounds of sheer skeletal muscle mass per year WITHOUT steroids... and I'm not talking about water retention.

It's easy to get to John's size without steroids. Generally, people are just lazy.

  • Exactly right, and most guys on roids are ripped,John has a natural look, and a quite large gut as well.Tons of carbs, lots of hard work, and 3 yrs one at his age could easily pack 40lbs in that time, cmon man.and Lynch was ripped as hell when he was using, completely different look.Ill bet he is not using roids,I dont even see a vaine in his arms.Very natural..

  • And the mic's and the cab's?

  • check his website

  • does anyone know if he uses the mxr overdrive for the lead tones? it would be strange to do solos without boosting the amp with a pedal for more sustain and smoothness of tone

  • Yoy have a great sound!!!

  • He reminds me of a roided up rob zombie now

  • wtf god no, they are fucking beautiful and play like heaven, I am so surprised that someone would say that, holy fuck
