Boycott's comments at 1:10 are hilarious considering that he was once run out on 99. Maybe he forgot about that... like he forgot his little domestic violence rampage.
Atherton was a much better batsman than his stats show. You look at the quality of bowlers he had to face throughout his career and you see why those runs he scored were so well deserved and fought for. Players like Cook or Pietersen - decent batsmen that they still are - wouldn't be massaging their 50-ish averages if they'd had to ply their trade against Ambrose, Walsh, Donald, Pollock.. etc etc. Good cricket writer/commentator/analyst too - sensible and knowledgable bloke.
@JimmersThomas That's definitely right. It amused/saddened me that Paul Collingwood finished with a higher average than Atherton. Atherton was in poor or at best average teams for the whole of his England career, and he had to a lot of great bowlers.
@jstreete Yeah, but I suppose it puts into context the achievements of Lara, Ponting, Border, Tendulkar, Dravid etc. Although of course Lara didn't have to face Walsh and Ambrose, Ponting didn't have to face Warne and McGrath, The Indians didn't have t face Kumble, etc etc.. still I think those boys earned their runs the hard way
@Kcila I don't know about that, Hick was told when Athers would declare, but Hick was just letting balls go and blocking, not even trying to force the pace. I might upload the few overs leading up to that declaration, that would be a cool upload!!!!!!
@robelinda2 That would be a very good upload, Rob. I remember the declaration the same way you did. Hick was dawdling. And yet so many English fans hated Atherton for that. Sorry Graeme but England was trying to win a Test match.
Hahahaha, that is the best! Thanks Rob!

Sad but it was deserved karma - what Athers vdid to Graeme Hick at Sydney in 1994/5 was indeffensible.
