If you enjoy this piece, I recommend the Complete Trios and Sonatas by the Kalichstein Laredo Robinson Trio. They are superb veteran musicians who have played together for over three decades.
SHES PLAYING TOOOOOOOO LOUD..my goodness. the piano and cello are suppose to be one. ..sell she is quit good though. I like her..but she needs to be well aware for the piano!!
around 4:23 ish she only plays the top F and Eb, instead of playing the DF 10th and the the Eb octave. It's not terribly difficult but it's definitely a tricky passage that I've spent many hours trying to get it in tune :P
ahhh i see. thanks for the clarification. yeah that section is pretty borderline for me... ive been doing 1 and 4 for the Eb octave but now im starting to resort to thumb since its safer. not a long enough pinky i guess =[
Having recently read Volkov's Testimony, Soltzenitzin's Gulag Archipelago, and Antony Beevor's Stalingrad, I can't tear my mind from the evocative imagery in this video. Ms. Nuzova, mocked by an unlit fire, huddles, collar up and bundled, whilst a fleshy Ms. Warner warms an audience with warmer wood and sustain. Warmth hunger, like famine and cultural imprisonment, can and has driven mad whole war-ravaged communities (e.g. the winter of '46-'47). Fireplace:Death; Nuzova:NKVD; Warner:DSCH. No?
Please be reminded that the work was compposed in 1934, just prior to Shostakovich's censure by the Soviet authority - NO FREEDOM of SPEECH NOR COMPOSITION>
I have the luxury of attending her live performance with the Washington DC Youth Orchestra many years ago on Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations. She has, now, some CD released on NAXOS label
Irene's challenging image of the leather jacket and tightly wound hair is an interesting contrast to Wendy's inviting garb and natural hair as the viewer watches this scene from foreground to background where the gaping maw of the fireplace seems to offer an avenue into the spirit of Dmitri's score, a spirit which reaches from the void to invite our meditations back into the void to brighten it substantially.
im just starting to learn this. already in love with it :)

The pianist here sounds a bit stiff.

Great Stuff!!

perceptive comment! Irina Nuzova worked for five years in Shapiro's studio, perhaps you are hearing her imprint on the performance.

Thank you for the video!
You make me feel all the pain of Shostakovich's music by this movenment and your sound is so soft!

i love her interpretation, even though she "cheated" on the double-stop part

how so? not saying that she didn't "cheat" or that she did, just wondering what u mean by cheating the double-stop section

Fireplace:Hate; Nuzova:Pain; Warner:Hope? I seem to be metaphor-mad with this one. What meanings can you glean from the mise--en--scène?

Bit too classical. But nice sound;)

How can something be too classical? Should they stick a 909 kick drum on it?

Wendy, as usual, sounds fantastic. Flawless performance, amazing tone, brilliant phrasing. Best cellist in the world.

Good yes, flawless no.

Your masterful handling of the frenetic dynamic (and rythmic) variations demanded by this score scores multiple points with this listener.
