@TheThomasSproduction The crossing is closed to vehicular traffic. There are two concrete barriers right behind where I'm filming. The road is still in place for bike and pedestrian access down to the lakefront, which is why the signals are still in place. The backgrounds and visors on the lights have been painted since this was shot.
It's sad this line doesn't handle nearly as many trains as it did when it was CNW. Even the Milwaukee Sub doesn't have as many freights as back in the day, so it's rare to see freights on this line with the exception of the Racine/Sheboygan locals, and the rock train that heads to Gurnee.
@lordbemylight Very true! There's one mixed freight that drops-off / picks-up cars in Waukegan that uses the Kenosha Sub. The local that comes down to Racine a couple days a week from Cudahy only handles coal cars for the one customer left here in town. Tie work is about to begin on the Milwaukee Sub soon, so there should be a spike in daytime traffic on the Kenosha Sub for a little while. Always nice to see more traffic besides Oak Creek coal trains on this line!
do these trains usually come from racine and head south towards kenosha/milwaukee im a canadian train fan so im unaware of the geographics of these train routes
I'm not sure exactly where they originate, but they come up from the Chicago area and pass through Kenosha, Racine, and then Milwaukee. From Milwaukee they can take the Adams Sub up towards Minneapolis or the Shoreline Sub to Sheboygan, WI. The Shoreline sub handles mostly coal trains for the Edgewater Power Plant and a few mixed freights in and out of Sheboygan.
Man, I was suprised to see that CSX power myself! Those A-gates were removed not too long after I took pictures of them. Really a shame since the crossing is closed to vehicular traffic.
There are FRA regulations that must be followed for closing a crossing; even if the road is closed, the railroad cannot just close the crossing and remove the crossing signals without approval from the FRA. That's why you sometimes see crossing signals still in place protecting a closed road, as you see here. And since it's still considered an "official" crossing by the FRA, the signals have to be maintained and upgraded as long as they remain in place. That's gov't bureaucracy for you.
People also use the closed road as a walking / biking path too, so they cross the tracks here. It's not posted as "No Trespassing" or anything like that in the area.
Pretty long but looks great!

Despite the road's appearance, the bells are GREAT! These older sounds are also better than those "digital" or "chime" sounds.

@Brenton81 Thanks for explaining a hopper train. I enjoyed your video O:)

What does it mean when a train is a "hopper"?
coashddjj2 1 year ago
@coashddjj2 "Hopper" refers to a type of car. This train is pulling all hopper cars. They're loaded at the top and emptied through the bottom.

There's a few left up here and there along this subdivision, but a lot more on the Milwaukee Sub a few miles west.

Nice Catch Brenton. Are they thinking about replacing that crossing, because I think they may need it.

Nice video, Brent. Still a cool old crossing despite the A-gates being gone. Nice catch of the CSX power, too.

Why?
fastlane250 2 years ago
I guess because it doesn't really go anywhere. Lake Michigan is just beyond the tree line in the background and the road dead ends there.
Brenton81 2 years ago
I wonder why UP would leave the crossing there then.
