  • I've pulled the turbo off a Charger w/o removing the head, several times. It's really not that hard, takes about an hour by myself, on stands. I drive an 87 Shelby Z every day too :) Definitely fun to play with, playing around with the tune right now. Hopefully will get some work done on the GLHS this year too :D

  • 1986 GLH Turbo Add 13 PSI Mopar computer $145. 14.8 1/4 mile @ 93mph, everthing else factory stock. 1989 Daytona Shelby Add 14 PSI Mopar computer $160, 15.0 1/4 mile @92mph everthing else factory stock. Quick cars in the 80s, Camaro/Firebird, 15.0-15.7 1/4, Mustang LX 5.0, 14.8-15.3. 1/4, Corvette 14.4-15.1 1/4, Buick GN 14.3-14.9 1/4. These Dodge Turbo cars will go right into the mid to low 13s with traction. Facts.

  • Damn nice car...

I've got an '88 Shadow ES and it weighs 1108kgs or about 2500lbs.

Personally i like the look of the 87/88 Shadows, just not the newer 89+. The front end i certainly have to admit is ugly... :s

  • i have a 90 shelby daytona and i can pick on mustang's all day. it's close but if keep the rpm's down on take off i can get them. i dont going to bs.a rolling start help's. but i think my turbo going out. if it does im going to look in to the super 60. and punch the block 20 over and mill the head down. mabe bigger est.i kno the super 60 around $1500 at my dodge shop

  • i have a 1991 dodge daytona bored .30 over heads r milled down .40 and its ported n poshiled

  • so why do we need a v8 again plz?

    tell me

  • because v8s are lighter and more fuel efficient... wait...

  • They sound AMAZING and have all this power without a turbo but both cars are fun in their own ways to me.

  • that TA was struggling to keep up!

  • i have a 89 mustang gt wit 392 stroker and i got my but kick my a daytona

  • thats dodge power for you

  • The daytonas could easily put out 300HP with simple mods.. The power to weight ratio makes them famous...

  • there realy nice cars i personaly say they need a better axle or yall just dont push em to hard hahaha chryslers for ya

  • power to weight?

I'd take a omni or a shadow with the 2.3lt or 2.5lt over the daytonas. easily 250lbs lighter or more

  • @ cliffjumper1984:

Yeah, but the Omni and Shadow are Butt Fugly.

  • shadows w/ the ES trim is not...

and it's all opinion based anyway

but when 300 lbs can easily give you .25 of your 1/4 fugly or not. it's still faster

  • Just pull the back seats out of the daytona and you're back in business.

  • @cliffjumper1984 And a lot less room to work around lol. You can actually get the turbo off a daytona without pulling the head, do that in an omni or charger lol. Not like its hard to pull the head on those anyway though.

  • Quick little car!

  • not so little. its 4.7m long. but its light. stock '87 shelby z weight about 1250kg

  • More than one v-8 driver got his head handed to him by a Chrysler turbo car in the 80s. Chrysler was crazy to ever stop building these cars.

  • this is Gary Donovan's Daytona and it no longer exists, he has a 10 sec plymouth reliant and basically hes a god in theese engines lol

  • yes, he is

  • the orange car is a 83 TA ok not an iroc and yes its a 305 not 350 !!!!!

  • by the look of the cars, yes. it's a 83T/A 305 and daytona 2.2 Turbo II Shelby..

but stock T/A won't reach low 14, and dodge can't dream about mid 12..

both cars are modded so You can't really say whats inside the hood

  • Head over to thedodgegarage com and you'll see what's in the daytona. I expect he only spent about $2k on it...if that. Pretty much all of the mods were done by himself.

  • Iroc .. Trans am? What's the difference. A $30 grainger valve and an opened up stock exhaust will beat both and still manage to get 25mpg city!

  • That wasnt an IROC in to video....it was a Trans Am

  • just fyi this car was parted out a few years ago. the guy that owns it has a 10 sec k car.

  • not a stock engine by the way.

Valves back cut 20psi+ boost 5th and 6th injectors ect.

  • yes, lag is big (except vnt models) but on the streets you get used to it and you keep rpm above 2500..

  • ha my exact car, but the prior owner put a bigger turbo from a mitsu in it. its pushing 18-19 psi from what i can tell. i installed an intercooler also. its a fucking ghost and no one ever sees it coming.

  • stock mitsu turbo is smaller (but spools faster) than stock garrett installed in daytonas. i have both so trust me. 18-19psi is max what You can get from mitsu. garrett can be pushed much more... :)

  • wont garrett t2s give up to 30 psi?

  • i had T3 in my daytona. pushing it higher than 20PSI on stock engine is rysky

  • @EatableCWEED They can but they arent even close to efficient at 30PSI. Not to mention being ran on a SOHC its not worth it.

  • ya i talked to the guy and mine is a CS daytona with the garret turbo from a shelby. it rips

  • But the lag on the turbo was bad, a V8 would get you at the start.

  • My 89 Daytona w/2.2 5 spd will smoke the tires off. I bought it in 2000 for $500. Buddy thought it needed a new engine. Have yet to change anything other than the oil since.

Mopar, Let Me Count the Ways

    Owner for Life

  • That Daytona was highly modified.

Back in the 80's and early 90's, those 2.2 Turbos were not even in the same league with the 5.0 Mustang or 5.7 Trans Am/Z-28s.

On the street the Daytona looked good, but was a dog.

  • Yup, thats what we want you to believe. Its a common myth.

Most of these beliefs came from the magazines which tended to post 1/4 mile times from the F-bodies and the Mustangs that were about a second faster than real life.

Most of the turbo Dodges tended to get a few tenths faster in real life than the magazine times.

That equaled a lot of surprised Mustangs and Camaros.

  • You can't be serious. A myth?

I was out on the street in those years, and have been in hundreds of street encounters with all these vehicles.

The Daytona's were slow, they NEVER beat a 5.7 IROC or a 5.0 Mustang in ANY streetrace or track encounter, stock vs. stock.

NEVER. Not a myth. Hard fact.

  • Yeah, I was running around in those days too in my '85 GLH Turbo. Also, my bro in the '85 Shelby Charger, and Mark in the '89 Shelby Daytona.

We also used to hang around the IROC boys quite a bit. It was all pretty friendly. What I can tell you as fact was on average:

    GLHT - high 15's

    S Charger - low 16's

    Daytona Shelby - high 15's

    305 IROC carb - low 17's

    305 IROC FI - low 16s'

    350 IROC - mid 15's.

    mid-80's mustang = 17's give or take

    late- 80's mustangs = low 15's.

  • Cont.

The Daytona came in so many trim packages, its really hard to spot the fast ones. The fastest of the non-16V cars was the '87 Shelby Z. Its a stripped down 2700lbs car. I have seen one clock a 15.2 at the track when new.

I am not doubting you. Its possible that the dealers in your area sold a lot of power window, power seat, auto(no intercooler)luxo models to boost profits. On T4s, heavy = really slow.

BTW, I have smoked countless IROC 305's. The 350's were a bit more of a challenge.

  • the main problem with daytonas is traction. it's a fwd..

but indeed, mid 90' mustang V6 dont have chance. V8's are stronger but hevier so on the street chaces are eaven (talking about stock cars).

  • Traction is a problem, but back in the day Dodge Turbos had equal length half shafts, they're common now, but back then it gave you more traction than the most FWD then.

You're way on the mark with traction. Good tire choices drop up to three or four tenths of a second on the 1/4 mile. My brothers stock Shelby Charger did a 15.4 on Yokohama A-008R's, but then tanked the tranny later, a weak point on the pre 88 cars. Gains with tires were substantially more than those with RWDs.

  • i tried many tires and there is still a problem. what size do u use? 225/55x16 ?

  • On my glhs, I use the stock 205/50-15's and the Kumho Ecsta V700 competition tires. Rev it up to 3000 RPM, drop the hammer. Tires will chirp, bog, then get traction quickly... 14.5 seconds. If the tires start spinning, you're done in that car. It can add as much as a second to your time.

On the '89 CSX, I use the 225/50-15's, older version of the Ecsta, VNT turbo allows you to control the lower end torque better, Rev it up to 1500 rpm, drop the hammer, control the wheel spin. Good for 14.8's.

  • all stock size 205 on slightly modded daytonta lose traction even if I start slovely and hamer it latter. 1st gear is horrible, second gets tracction at the end..

2.2 Turbo II Shelby, about 200KM/300Nm, Getrag A555 tranny....

  • you would think an iroc with an engine that is 115 cubic inches larger almost twice the size of a daytonas would be much faster, even if an iroc can beat a daytona by a few tenths Im not impressed.

  • where is your iroc Ill eat it with any of my dodges, shelby lancer, GLHS, Laser xt you can pick.

  • @Greenpublican You're proud that a lowly economy car with a 4 banger can be beat by a V8? And by only 1.5 seconds in the quarter? A $20.00 grainger valve and it's all over.

  • archone64s right. back in the day mustangs and camaros barely put out 200 horse and weighed much more. btw 5.7s barely even exhisted in f-birds or camaros until the mid 90s. instead they had a dinky 305 that was worse than the ford 5.0. i have yet 2 c a 5.7 in a stock 80s/early 90s comaro or f-bird

  • Any chance of me getting the file for this to add to a video?

  • these cars can handle loads of boost and easily can run 300+ whp and over 30 pounds of boost.I run 26psi and it screams(dont need a V8 to be loud)

Even dead stock with a boost controller you can get 220hp out of the 2.2 no problem not bad for a $1500 car.

  • I bought my '85 turbo 5spd daytona for $500. I never raced or tested, but it was the fastest car I've driven (driven something like 50 bein a mechanic for awhile). The 2.2 turbo stock is incredible.

  • My turbo 4 daytona would smoke the tires in third. Dont need a v8 to make that kinda noise.

  • yea that daytona does sound like a v8

  • another win by Dodge. When will they learn...

  • and btw: I own a 13,5sec daytona. it can sound like nothing else..

  • for those who don't believe (i can't post direct link here): open google and search for thedodgegarage video page

  • I don't hear a 2.2 turbo, I hear two V8's. listen to the daytona burnout at the beginning.

  • What??? All you hear from the Daytona is tires chirping with every shift. Nice driving by the way. Not many people can speed shift a manual like that.

  • true

  • Especially not THAT manual, haha. Shifts a mile long. Solid-feeling as hell, though. Miss mine to death.

  • A555 ?

  • Killed that Firebird, very nice

  • Oh you know they hate it when a american 18 year old turbo 4 hands it to them with a sohc!

  • hell yeah daytonas own check my vid
