  • Dude is this the photoshop voiceover guy????!!!

  • Thank you very much for uploaded this history!

  • Comment removed

  • @desideedee

"Pospischil" is a Czech name, originally spelled "Pospíšil". And Vienna, with it's history as a capital of a formerly multi-ethnic empire, is a different story from the rest of Austria as it attracted workers from all parts; resulting in the interesting mix of ethnic backgrounds the Viennese have. Until 1945, and even BEFORE 1933/38, the vast majority of Austrians (90+%) considered themselves ethnic German. After WWII, people were brainwashed for decades to disencourage German unity.

  • The gazebo scene was actually filmed on the Fox studio lot in Hollywood. The gazebo which now stands is a replica of the one used in the film but was not originally there back in 1963 when it was filmed. If you listen to the movie commentary, Charmain Charr (Lisel) explain thats as she ran out of the house in Austria and turned right down the path, she then appears running on a set in Hollywood.

  • Thank you ... I enjoyed this. But one thing - Maria didn't climb a tree on the Untersberg to look over the Abbey walls ... in her first interview with the Reverend Mother, she specifically states that "when I was a little girl, I used to come down the mountain, climb a tree and look over into your garden".

  • to purists out there, there's no need to accuse the film of distorting history since the film is simply a medium of art. Besides the real Maria Von Trapp was consulted if changes were okay... LOL she even said to Chris Plummer "you're more handsome than my husband!"

  • @crimsloch: Creative post. Cheers!

  • haha...it's funny listening to an american guy talking about austria and knowing just 2 much.

U really start liking austria once ur away. (I'm in new zealand now and come from a region not that far from salzburg)

THUMBS UP 4 MY BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY!!!!

  • Von Trapp is made to be a war hero. Actually he commanded a 6 man Uboat for the defunct Austrian Navy. They had only one seaport, Trieste, that Italy was given after WWI. Nevertheless it is a wonderful story but the tale has been expanded on. The von Trapp family went on a day tour of Switzerland on a train and never returned. Depending on what ethnic group you belonged to new countries were carved out of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. The ethnic Germans lost the most. They were pissed off too.

  • What is that shiny floating object in frame 29?! It looks like you shot a UFO!

  • holy cow!! im doing a project about maria vonn trap! she liv!ed in austria

  • I want the ACTUAL movie..

  • it's a hollywood musical, not discovery channel documentary!! lol

  • Cool video. Full of Information, and good pacing.

  • the only my favorite music of all time :)

  • thanks for sharing!

  • Just for the sake of historical accuracy: the Trapp family did NOT flee.

They rented their property to a fraternity order, simply bought some train tickets to Italy and got on a ship to the USA. Thats it.

  • @desideedee

    (PART 1 of 3)

For the sake of historical accuracy: Did the Nazis pay rent after they seized the von Trapp villa in 1940? Is it so “simple” to leave one’s homeland forever, with only the possessions on one’s back? Moreover, to “flee” means to “run away from something.” Unquestionably, the von Trapps fled Nazi-occupied Austria. In September 1938 ...

  • @oktoberfest1810 (Part 1 of 2)

Oha, got it 3 times- don´t worry, i´m replying;) Well see, I´m not gonna badmouth here about this... musical tale (heck, I never saw SoM- to be accurately, I got on your vid over an article for some Tourist-Disney in Salzburg and honestly after getting nosey about it on youtube, I just wished I would have sticked to your vid only;) ) but I´m definitly not buying their (the Trapp´sch) sob story. Like many people in Austria, I too think that

  • @oktoberfest1810 (Part2/2)

the real "von"Trapps had far more connections to Nazi- officers and the catholic Nazi-collaborateurs than they told and that their life story is quite a nebulous one... Maybe someone should make a film about that too :)

    Greez

  • @desideedee The ethnic Germans of Austria lost far more than any group in Europe. It is no surprise that they welcomed a person who promised them pay back. Serbia has always been a thorn in the side of Europe & lookout state for Russia. I have recently been enlightened to the plight of the peasants of Europe. They were in a sort of slavery and had good reason to see the destruction of the continental European monarchies.

  • @aellarex

As a "ethnic German" of Austria I say you are talking quite .... bollocks. Whoever "enlightened" you, you definitely sould stop seeing this person. He is probably just a retard.

By the way, serbs are still the biggest ethnic group in Austria and that one who made the industrial rise possible in early 20 Jhd. the most viennese things have serb roots and "Pospischil" is one of the most common names. So stop Bull****ting OUR Serbs. We are AUSTRIANS not Germans. Learn the difference!

  • @oktoberfest1810 Believe the hype why don't you.

  • (PART 2 of 3)

In September 1938 the von Trapps did experience a rather routine voyage to the United States on the passenger ship the American Farmer. Six months later, however, their visas expired without the possibility of extension, thus they were required to leave the country. Ultimately, the von Trapps were granted a new US visa and allowed back stateside October 1939. Regarding these anxious times ..

  • (PART 3 of 3)

Regarding these anxious times of caring for a family of 12 in a multitude of foreign lands, Maria stated that “…’home’ isn’t necessarily a certain spot on earth but a place where you can feel at home, which means ‘free’ to us.” The Story of the Trapp Family Singers is, indeed, intriguing and multifaceted, thus its perennial success.

  • @desideedee I've read her book, their choice? stay and be forced to ally themselves with the Nazi's or leave their home....that's fleeing.

  • シネデブ

  • funny narrator

  • thanks for the trivia. it made me more appreciate the movie

  • i was in elementary (grade six) when i viewed this film and since then ..just can't forget my fave singer Julie Andrews...she's just magnificent......till now...

  • Beautiful country !

  • Thanks for sharing! If I ever get the opportunity to see those places in real life, I'll totally skip through the pathway and I'm not above spinning around on the mountain. :)

  • wow now I really want to go to austria and see all these places! thanks great video......LOVE THE SOUND OF MUSIC!!!!!!!

  • don't miss vienna if you visit austria :)

  • lolllll i come from salzburg! but the hills are smal for us austrians in salzburg! if you want to see real hills go to kärnten (großglcokner). and the trapps are not popular in austria, because 99% of our grandfahters was nazis.... soooo

  • So wonderful sights of Austria.Narration is just brillant. The documentary perfect and surely next travel destination will be Salzburg.Real pleasure to be in family Von Trapp world.

  • Excellent! The Sound of Music is the best film of all times!

  • its my favorite movie of all times

  • i've been there!! cool vid XD

  • haha "no wonder she was late"

  • I was in Salzburg last week but didn't have enough time to go explore the surrounding area and the film spots of "the Sound of music". Your video is amazing and full of interesting info. Thank you very much. I will definitely visit Salzburg again. It's a wonderful and lovely city.

  • I have been in Salzburg 1 time....but sorry I dont rember it's nice town!!

  • you did a fantastic job!!! god i wanna visit salzburg now... tell you wat if anybody is going let me know...

  • Splendid video. I am more eager to visit Salzburg now.

  • joaquin66, "thank you" for your comment! Salzburg is an absolute must-visit. It's more beautiful than you imagine. Really! And when you go, do yourself a favor and bring my Salzburg-Sound of Music do-it-yourself guide with you available now on my website: HarrimanTravelBooks dot c o m

  • @oktoberfest1810 I have for the first time visited Saltzburg and stood in the garden where the mvie was shot. I bought a lot of Salt for my souvenirs. After the orchestra concert of our high school in Nuernberg,Germany, we visited there, then to Wien. It recalls my brass band play this Soud of Music in my high schol days.

  • Happy to find this channel though I´m living in Salzburg !

  • I went there about 15 years ago but in November and EVERYTHING was completely snowed out, it was miserable. I went right in the middle of a blizzard and it snowed the whole week I was there. Then I went to Vienna and couldn`t believe how nasty the people were there. I`d buy something and they wouldn`t give me my change, if I complained they would ignore me, people yelling at me if I didn`t cross the street exactly at the crosswalk. It seems the Nazis never left.

  • I totally agree. I have been living for four years at Salzburg and made the same experiences. I also did the SOM-Tour. I was disappointed, because the guide was always laughing about the movie fans.

  • @JackHauss

Hello Jack! I'm sorry that you had such a bad time in Austria. But be assured that many Austrians, including myself, thank the American people to get our music back. The Nazis had no music. Please visit Salzburg once more. There are some very nice people.

  • Thanks, Brett. Loved the tour! Now I want to go in person and see all the sights.

  • "Thank you," chaliceguard. And I hope you do go in person and see all the sights. To travel foreign lands is the best medicine, a life-educating experience. See ya on the road...

  • An excellent documentary. I'll have to return to see Salzburg in summer!!!

  • Thanks for your comment. Do return in summer; Salzburg is as vibrant and resplendent as the multihued flowers embellishing the Mirabell Gardens.

  • My favorite movie of all time - my parents took me to see it when it first came out .. I was four !! I remember not quite getting the premise of the film, but being very intrigued and fascinated by the children playing the VonTrapps. I would just LOVE to go to Austria and see all of this for real. Someday ... !! :)

  • I love this movie and it even better i went the Salzburg with my band and we went to the castle and skip through the tunnel

  • NIce...I liked it....

  • boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • The Water castle at 1:24 is also found in the movie "the great race".

  • WOW, his German pronunciation is really Horrible!

  • This clip incorrectly states that the von Trapp family 'dramatically' escaped Austria. In fact, they simply left by train.

  • Although its true the "escape" occurred by train via the station located behind the Trapp mansion, it was still an extremely "dramatic" situation (narrated at 1:02) for two main reasons: 1) If caught, Baron von Trapp would likely have been jailed. 2) The Trapps owned a large estate having many pricey possessions. Besides having to forfeit all this by choosing to leave, the Trapp family also forever left behind their homeland, which would be a rather "dramatic" situation in anyone's life.

  • i wanna go!

  • 1:10-1:20 ist der königssee in bayern...sehr schöner ort und nationalpark :)

  • One of my all time favourite musical movies!!!!!

  • maria jose, gupishhhimimaaa!!! :)

  • I love the song!

  • the funny thing is, that this movie ins't famous in austria. nobody knows it!

and most facts about the austrians are also false... we wear not dirndls all the time and most of us cannot "jodeln"

but i like the movie ;)

  • Bullshit ! Most of the Austrians know this movie !!! But it was not a big success like in the rest of the World. When I look out of my Window I see this Hills and Mountains. I go to Salzburg every month. Why should the Austrians go to the Cinema to see the same again? Many of us wear dirndls. You can go to the Wiener Staatsoper wearing dirndl. And many of us learn Volksmusik. ( Jodeln is just a small part of it )
  • no you are dead wrong most people in austria don´t know that something like this movie exists (i for my self had to google it because i read about it on american message board and was wondering what to hell they are talking about) and many of us learn volksmusik and wear dirndls? sorry i don´t know on what god forsaken mountain hill you live to think that but if you really believe that a movie like this represents the real austria then you deffinitely know nothing about the country you live

  • Just because you didn`d know this Movie.

Maybe the young Austrians don`t know this movie, but the older ones do.

Yes I come from the Countryside.

And many of us wear Dirndls and

    Lederhosen, especially on Sunday.

You are dead wrong if you think

that what goes on in the big Cities

    is the "real" Austria.

  • hey i never denied that something like people who wear dirndls exist. they are just really hard to find :-) but you said many and this implies that there are really a lot of people in austria doing this and i would not call it a lot if you may find some people in a 100 souls community in the extreme countryside doing this. this would be like saying square dance is the upcoming youth movement in the US only because you may find some people in the extreme south who do this if you dig far enought.

  • My tour guide didn't like for people to mention or want to see "Sound of Music" stuff. I was perplexed, cause I'm sure they've made a lot of money over the years on the love of that movie. I was 5 when the movie came out and I can remember going with my parents. My Dad got the sound track and of course I knew every word...still do.

  • i live there.. .woohooo.... but at the moment i am in england, i cant wait tho to go back home in 4 weeks!!!

  • Hai Grüße aus Tirol!!

Cool - I didn`t know that this movie is that famous! :-))

PS: Maaah und a Pinzgauer-Kuh is auch da!!! ggg

  • thanks to the sound of music im learning how to sing! (well actually thats because i was in the sound of music play)

  • I was in Salzburg last summer. The people were warm, the city is gorgeous.

  • i wish someone would post of the actual movie. i wanna see it soo bad. D:

  • It is on DVD.

  • just download it off isohunt d0t c0n or thepiratebay d0t 0rg they have it cause i got i not to long ago.

  • We took this tour - nice to relive it thru this video.

  • Salzburg is the most beautiful place in the world! It looks exactly as in the film and I hope it will always be so.

  • @CrustyConrad Great skiing, I bet

  • It is one of the best movies I've seen and the best movie to share with the family, greetings from Peru.

  • this vid started good - but this narrator is more about "exposing" what he see's as failing of this movie - he sounds too full of himself - sorry, not the way a fan wants to do this. Goodbye and 1 star.

  • Comment removed

  • I learned a lot but the narrator's voice has this weird tone.. :S But nice vid anyway.

  • :19 to :21 Pretty girls!

  • wow that place is beautiful!

  • Charmian Carr (Liesl) fell through the gazebo glass while filming that scene. She hurt her ankle but was otherwise okay and continued filming like a trooper.

How scary that must have been.

    These videos are wonderful!!

  • We went to the garden, & we have many wonderful pictures here. We got a picture of someone riding a bicycle down the trail/road leading to the house.

My husband bought me a crystal Swan & a Switz Watch.

When the family left Germany, the moved to New York & then moved to Vermont & they bought some land & created a ski resort.

  • The only thing I enjoyed about the Eagles Nest was the view & location, however not the cold people that was working there @ the time: they played their part too well. Not that we are @ all fans of Hitler, as it was a friend who suggested that we ought to go to the eagles nest.

  • I've been here with my husband, & went on the tour. The front of the house is different from the back of their house as the views of the house were shot @ 2 different houses.

I enjoy romantic movies such as this.

My husband & I toured The Sound Of Music, since we were in Germany for a family reunion & I was able to meet my grandmothers sister while in Switzerland.

Shawn & I also went to the Eagles Nest: what an ideal view of Switzerland.

  • it is still a beautiful place

  • hey u dummy its actually a movie so i would think they may have made some changes. by the way austria is beautiful

  • i luv this movie even if its old but its a classic

  • Wonderful Austria :)

  • 3:58 American Woman....

  • Just newly visited Salzburg and able to take a tour of The Sound of music.....it all came back alive!!!

  • my gran luvs dis sh**

  • i just loove this movie after watching it at school we were singing do ray me like almost every day lol

  • why did you make a classic sound so bad!!! we all have all own thoughts on this movie yours seems negative

  • Fabulous video!

  • Thank you!!

  • Nothing like a singing family running from Nazi's to put a smile on your face... =]

  • Nevermind. Just watched part II and it was you........Acting!

  • This one's definitely a must see for "Sound of Music" fans. Was that you at 4:09-4:12 simulating a reaction to the pretend "Renazification" of Residenz Square that is mentioned in the narration? Funny.

  • The Sound of Music is de mooiste familiefilm ooit gemaakt. Zelfs na 200 keer kijken (nee, dit is echt niet overdreven) blijft het verhaal romantisch en de muziek te gek!

En ik hou van Salzburg. :o)

  • I've just been back from Salzburg. It is truly a wonderful place. I regret it is too touristy though.

  • This movie captured my imagination like nothing else when I was a teenager. It also indirectly sparked my interest in all the great 1960's music that was around when it was filmed.

  • maria was only 22? Was the oldest 16 going on 17? yikes!

  • I have you all beat--I've seen the movie 1294823 times and I've been to Salzburg!! ;-)

    It was...uhh...wet. :) And pretty.

  • youd better go again you havent seen the half of it.

  • Sorry?

  • I still have yet to watch sound of music, however during my trip to Munich this April, we did a side trip to Salzburg and that one day in Austria was the highlight of our entire vacation.

  • I was thrilled to read Salzburg was your trip highlight but very surprised that you have not seen the movie. I receive loads of email from people saying they've seen the movie 30 times or more and dream of visiting Salzburg one day. Will1265, I ask you, watch the movie for them. Go on, rent it tonight.

  • any body have the full episode?

  • You can find Part 2 at the bottom of the Related Videos list (right of screen) or click on my YouTube homepage: oktoberfest1810

    Happy travels!

  • As a resident of Salzburg, some of the facts in regard to the filming locations are wrong. The exterior filming of the villa was in Schloss Leopoldskron.

  • Thanks Andreas for your comment. Your observation surprised me. (I address this in my follow-up response.) The reason you don't see Schloss Leopoldskron in this SOM Part I video is because it is explained in Part II, found on my YouTube homepage (Oktoberfest1810).

  • Andreas, when I read your comment the first time I didn't understand it. The same when I read it the second time. So I watched SOM Part I. Then it came to me: The answer to a question I've asking myself for a while now. "How is it that Part I has some 200,000 views and Part II just a few thousand?" When I looked for Part II in the Related Videos section, it wasn't there. Urgh!! I had to go to my YT homepage to find it. So this answers my question, and yours too concerning Schloss Leopoldskron.

  • I love that voice! very good!!!!!!!

  • You're too kind!

  • What programme did you use to make this?

  • I used Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0. I'm not thrilled with it but I'm not disappointed either (I paid about US$100). I'll upgrade soon. BTW, I saw your SOM video and thought you did a great job! Really! Your family/friends had so much fun, and that translates to the viewing audience. Keep up the good work, and many more happy travels.

  • Siempree la recuerdo la vi 11 veces exelente

  • greetings from salzburg !!!

  • This movie will always be a popular choice.

  • I'm packing my bags for Germany and Austria! **S**

  • You go girl! A whole new world awaits you...

  • Wow, I didn't know Australia was so lush... I thought more deserts and kangas.

Did the Nazi's really make it that far?

    "Austria, Australia whatever" Ted Knight

  • Austria, not Australia. Austria is the country where Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger was born in.

  • yeah, a joke there... ;)

  • Oh okay. Haha ;)

  • lol v3rtigo7... I didn't say a GOOD joke but hey I try.. thanks for the being polite with the laugh tho lol...

    peas..

  • Haha I got it now, that's what Ted Knight says!

  • 0:17 where is that?

  • It's Lake Fuschl, located 10 miles east of Salzburg. Fuschl is the first lake in the stunningly scenic Salzkammergut, or lake region. A handful of scenes were filmed in the region; for example, remember during the Do-Re-Mi curtain-wearing sequence Maria and the kids were briefly seen riding a steam train? This was filmed on Sheep Mountain, which is the pointy peak in the distant background of the picture. And to its left (out of picture) is Lake Moon, where Hollywood married the von Trapps.

  • wow thnx 4 that, extremely detailed, u know ur stuff.

  • You're welcome! I had better know my stuff, I was a Sound of Music tour guide for five years and I currently write a guidebook on Germany & Austria, in which a comprehensive do-it-yourself Sound of Music tour is its own 11-page chapter. Lots of info, fun! Hopefully you'll get to Salzburg, soon, to do the tour. The scene at 0:17 you enquired about can be found a short distance past the Sheraton Hotel on the road to St. Gilgen.

  • nice work, good luck on your book, hopefully i can read it one day! I ahve always wanted to go to Germany and Austria.

  • We all know what frozen hearts are doing and saying... :o) They are boring and to regret.

This is a wonderful movie information...

Thanks for posting ! Keep on showing us this wonderful movies...

  • Thank you for watching, commenting, and putting this video in your Favorites! Lucky for you, the beautiful scenery showcased in this Academy Award winning film is just down the road. Danke noch mal.

  • thank you for posting this and happy new year :)

  • You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed the vid. Happy New Year to you, too! Happy New Year to all...

  • Great piece, but the family was the Trapp family, not Von Trapp.

  • you are wrong, they are my cousins, the Von Trapp family

  • Amazing video, thanks! We saw The Salzburg Marionette Theater perform "The Sound of Music" here in Burlington VT! Johannes and Maria F von Trapp all came to meet the puppeteers after the show! Wish you could have seen it!

  • Wow! How exciting. Yes, I wish I could have seen the marionettes. But thank you for sharing your video StuckinVermont 56. It was excellent. Well done! I felt like a fly on the wall watching enthusiastic kids sing Do Re Mi and adults recounting their Sound-of-Music inspirations. And very cool to hear Johannes impart snippets of his family's history! One day, soon, I hope to get up to the great state of Vermont for a visit. It's definitely on my list of things to do...

  • Yes do! VT is a nice place to visit!

  • Wow, Mr. Harriman, thank you so much for this wonderful video! I love the Sound of Music... Now I know what place to visit when I go to Europe: Salzburg, Austria...

  • Thank you, Shaktikriya, for the kind words! Yes, Salzburg deserves a place on any itinerary to Europe, especially fans of "The Sound of Music." It's a must-do and -see in life! I had a guy once on one of my tours to Salzburg who, after each site we visited, said: "Just leave me here." I wasn't quite sure what he meant by this; maybe he wasn't happy with the tour, so I had to ask: "What do you mean..." His reply came: "Just leave me here 'cause I never wanna to go home."

  • This is such a delightful and informative video about my favorite musical of all time! Thanks for putting this together and posting it on Youtube for all to see. =]

  • Thank you GLP for the compliments! The video was a joy to make because it's also my favorite musical.

  • I saw the original Trap Family Lodge in Stowe/Nothern Vermont on my last tour in New England this fall. Very nice.

And even though "The sound of music" doesn´t really have a happy ending it fills my heart with joy whenever I see it. Great actors, best music, beautiful Austrian vistas.

My compliments. Thanks for sharing this wonderful compilation with us.

  • Thanks for your comment LuckyStarAT. You've done something I've always wanted to do: Go to Stowe, Vermont, and visit the Trapp Family Lodge as well as visit the grave sites of Georg and Maria on the property. One day I'll get there; hopefully soon.

  • when i watch this video i'm happy to say it was a pleasure to make this movie it so nice

  • thanks professor wisenheimer.. say hello to rick steves..

  • I love this movie. Might have watched it a 100 times already. Haha. Feel like visiting Salzburg again! Thanks for the information, learnt a lot of new stuff. =)

  • Thank you for the compliment! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. You SHOULD revisit Salzburg, it's easily one of the world's most beautiful cities. Every time I go back (couple times a year), I fall in love again all over.

  • Wonderful. So informative after watching the movie this weekend!

  • Thank you for the compliment! I'm happy to know you enjoyed watching the video. The Sound of Music is one of my favorite movies and I could watch it 1,000 more times without tiring of it. Needless to say it was a pleasure making The Sound of Music, Unplugged!
