His voice is so thin. It doesn't sound terrible, but the timbre is icy and at times it's a bit unsupported. Also, I don't understand why everyone finds Gedda's F to be all that. Listen to Brownlee or Osborn, they do a good job.
This is awful. I don't care about "impressive range" in this case--he sounds like a baby wailing. It is a nasaly, effiminate voice. Also the hop hop hop up the first high D sounds like he's unsure whether to spring off the diviing board or not and take the plunge.....Some things are better left unsung.
A really GREAT high F. I think it's comparable with Gedda's, but I think Gedda has the edge on Matteuzzi with a slightly richer tone up in the stratosphere!
i cannot refrain from commenting again. as i continue to listen to this performance, i am more and more impressed by the sheer CLARITY of this man's voice. i am a trained organist and choir director, but i claim no special knowledge or understanding of the human voice or vocal production. this is simply what i HEAR. it is what i believe this man possesses. it is what gigli, corelli and, yes, lanza possessed, but caruso, pavarotti, domingo and carreras do/did not.
this man is nothing less than incredible. the d-flat is awesome enough, but the f natural above high c is unbelievable. it is certainly "full voice". how can that be denied? i believe we are simply unused to hearing these notes and automatically classify them as "falsetto". we "accept" notes above high c from sopranos all the time. why not tenors??
Mixed voice is simply the connection between these two registers. I am not arguing with anyone specifically I am just responding to the general subject of the comments. Hope this helps.
Also this is the best high F I have heard. Amazing!
CONTINUED- At the bottom is chest and as the voice gets higher less chest is used and more head is added. With proper technique and airflow this can create a full voice or belting sound. But if someone tries to carry the chest voice to high it will sound yelly and will hurt the voice. Also, if too much head voice is used it will sound light and hooty.
Mixed voice is not a type of falsetto and he is not singing in chest voice. No man could sing a high F in chest voice. It is full but it is also mixed. Mixed is not falsetto. It is exactly what the name sounds like. Mixed voice is a mix between head and chest. This is what all opera singers use in order to create connection within their voice. The voice is essentially like a pyramid.
The sincerely and emotional force of his singing are even more impressive than the high notes. Though not seen in this video, he is a master of the visual aspects of acting and communication also, especially in his earlier years
well that's the best F I have heard live and it was certainly full voice. I have been on stagein this opera many times and that was simply the truest high F.
I have always liked Matteuzzi, with all his merits and flaws. This high F is really good, by the way. The only thing that bother me is how fast his voice faded. By his early 40s his vocal decline was already serious, and he had to retire at an age where most tenors are in their prime.
@tranxuannghia I believe he has retired and is teaching voice in Bologna now. he gives master-classes and perhaps hemight do a few concerts here and there, but he is not definitely appearing in big opera companies anymore. So, yes, he has retired.
How charming that the web is so full of know nothing idiots all intent on proving same with your prattling. He performs the F in full voice and I have heard him sing a G in full voice in performance also. Those of you dribblers whom really know nothing about the human voice would do better to just shut up and keep to your ignorant selves.
I don't think it's healthy to sing an F full voice. I think that full voice isn't even a term that can be used to describe a "Leggiero" type tenor of this type. At about Ab tenors such as this most certainly begin to mix in head register. You are very astute for having recognized that the D and F are both in a mixed and balanced register and it's obvious to the trained ear that the F has a healthy mix of head with a thread of chest.
chest voice is when you push your voice kinda like its in your throat in a way of speaking you let nature take over falsetto is when you stick you air through the top of your head so to speak allowing the throat to take control chest voice is much harder to master falsetto anyone can do if you pretnd to talk lie a chik you got it snging much higher and still sounding lik a tenor is what chest voice is trust me its tough to master
Iam Fan of Pavarotti and i have to say that the High F of the Maestro is not very good, and in fact, he did only a few times Credeasi Misera with the High F.
First of all its not a High D...its a High C#...and secondly he doasnt reach the High F in full voice..that is not Full Voice..It is an extremely ringing Head Voice..Or mixed voice because it has chest resonance but the vocal chords are not vibrating entirely..that is why it is not Full Voice....it is Head Voice
look man, it is naturally IMPOSSIBLE for the Human Register in males to get a Full Chest Voice in notes like F5, i dont know all tenors in the entire world, but i know the nature of the human voice, and that yes involve ALL human tenors in the entire world, what youve heard bu diego florez, kraus, mateuzzi, and AALLLL of the versions in this area, IS HEAD VOICE, ask any vocal coach or any Fonoaudiologist, its HEAD VOICE, obviously proyected, theres no discusion about it,i neither like it
This is not impossible, but very rare and make this notes don't make you a great tenor, there is more things. I can make a E in full voice (with a lot of difficult and in perfect phisical condition) so sure there is someone that can make an F in full voice. But, i don't like this kind of ultrahigh notes, they sound ugly even in full voice, i think D ist more than enough.
in my opinion youre wrong, im that kind of persons who dont believe in chest notes beyond the D, i dont believe you can reach an E Full Voice, it can be a very well made mixt voize, but never Full Voice, because thats Chest, and no man ive seen can reach more than a D in chest, please record yourself doing the E and well see
@largomalmsteen its mixed voice AKA belt voice. this is what beyonce nad michael jackson use. and all other pop artists. becasue no body can hti abouve a c5 in chest voice.
@thegodofpop1 I don´t think any male can hit C5 in chest not even F4. Not even the Melocchi tenors that sang with a very heavy transition sings in chest voice above E4 it´s just as much chest as possible, sometimes making the voice "pitchy" in the passagio. The singers I refer to is Del Monaco, Giacomini and Nicola Martinucci.
I must disagree. Not only is there a tenor in my choir who has been proven to sing an F# above tenor high C without falsetto, I have also recorded myself singing a tenor high C without falsetto-and I'm a BASS. Men who can sing a tenor high C (or higher) without falsetto aren't easy to find, but they do exist.
@Jpmadore1 Who is talking of falsetto here?? I said chestvoice and that don´t mean that everyone sings in falsetto above F4 not even franco corelli´s high C in the studio recording of Di quella pira from -62 is in chestvoice and that is the best sounding high C I ever heard! It´s conected 100% to the body but that don´t mean chestvoice the speak of chestvoice is dangerous and a big reason why alot of tenors have such a problem with the high notes.
nope..im sorry to tell but thats a common mistake..that is not Full Voice...It is an extremely ringing Head Voice...Or mixed voice because it has chest resonance but the vocal chords are not vibrating entirely...that is why it is not Full Voice....it is Head Voice...which is excellent too

@largomalmsteen No, it's full voice, by which I mean "not falsetto". He has the same quality of tone throughout his range. If it was falsetto (or mixed voice, which is a type of falsetto) then you would hear a change in tone. Compare with the Rudel recording of Gedda or with Pavarotti. The change in tone is clear. Not so here.
@largomalmsteen full voice is closed chord singing. chest voice is only one part of full voice. chest, mixed, and headvoice all have chord closure thus they r full voice. and i also dont know of ANYBODY who could sing an f5 in chest voice so i dont get wut ur getting at. u seem like ur syaing people can hit thi note inchestvoice. heck even soprnos cant! :)
This is not an insult: It's just you. The recording is very low-quality. Depending on one's position on the stage, the microphones can pick them up either very loudly or softly, and end up making the sound very fuzzy.
Wonderful. I wish I could find what has become of Antonella
