  • horrible

  • its just annoying to listen too.

  • so sick. way ahead of its time! xpertfan is quite the intellectual, clearly....

  • sorry to tell you this, but this is garbage

  • oh marc, that hair.

  • Check out Stephen King rippin up!!!!

  • Business in the front, party in the back.

  • I have A LOT of respect for Frisell as a musician. He's one of the most adventurous players out there, he's not afraid to think outside of the box, but somehow... it still sounds SO GODDAMN GOOD. It's noise, yes... but it's calculated noise. Every note he plays is there for a reason.

  • I cant help but think of Frank Zappa's Jazz from Hell when I hear this

  • Stephen King shreds

  • amazing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • One of the finest musicians/guitarists/composers that the world has produced.

  • That's Marc Johnson on bass and Peter Erskine on drums.

  • That kickass bassist has one serious mullet!

  • For anyone interested in more of this kind of music, check out Susan Alcorn and Evan Parker.

  • OK - although I hate reading fashion comments on videos featuring innovative music by serious and talented musicians - I still gotta say, THAT BASS PLAYER HAS ONE SERIOUS MULLET!

  • @philipatoz hey, just because you can play an instrument like you're from outer-space doesn't mean you should have a hair-so like you are... lol

  • @philipatoz The video is from '86. Mullets were very fashionable then. I should know! ;)

  • @tsrzad, back in the day, I had a McGyver cut myself LOL. I think the mullet was just a transition cut for us ex-hippies that were mentally stuck between the freaky dos of our youth and a more manageable (more respectable?) adult one as we had gotten older. Nowadays, looking around at my fellow Boomers, I'm just extremely grateful to still have a full, yet ever-graying mane! As they say, "OLD AGE AIN'T FOR SISSIES!"

  • This seems like one of those "____ shreds" video...

  • ahahhah

  • ahaha

  • ahahahaha that thought crossed my mind too. i love frissel, but i want to hear more shuffled eighths for some reason...not groovin enough?

  • frisell rocks!

  • Ummmmm . . . . WOW!!! As usual with Bill. Pretty Amazing stuff. Thanks for sharing this bathoshue.

  • Fabulous recording, but too bad the sound on the drums is so low/bad. Peter Erskine is a monster drummer who doesn't deserve to be left in the background.

  • great stuff...try some ceicl taylor if this style interests you...provocative music that piques your senses...

  • AVANT GARDE!

  • I am new to Frisell and find this amazing-the pure sound that he breathes out of his guitar. It is abstract and wide-open to interpretation.

  • well, enjoy bill´s amazing music...

  • I usually love frisells more tasteful work...this is a bit too abstract for me

  • "tasteful" is a very subjective word! ;)

but, to each his own of course.

  • Same here. I realy enjoyed "This Land", and his playing with Mike Stern on "Play". The freaky stuff kinda misses the mark with me. Not so much a matter of it being less tasteful, as it is of it being less structured...

  • this is really great great music..... just really good and very emotional piece of sound....

  • First Frank, Then Derek, then Bill. I guess I gotta get an SG.

  • Frank (Zappa)?

    Derek (Bailey)?

    Bill Frisell?

  • I'm guessing Trucks

  • +1 on Trucks

  • Whoa! This kicks ass!

  • Like Jim Hall, Metheny, Abercrombie and Scofield, Bill Frisell is one of the best jazz guitar players. Great harmony .

  • Is this the abstract art of music...

  • Where's Scofield?

  • Just amazing. Bill Frisell is one of the most adventurous guitar players ever, with strong sense for tone and melody. Thank you for posting this piece.

  • Try Jon Damian! (Frisell's teacher at Berklee)

  • @dakcz More like sense of non-melody. It's actually quite hard to listen to this. Put this on randomly in a room when you're just hanging out with a few people and see how long before one of the guests stabs someone. This is painful to listen to. And after zappa and the whole prog era what's the point?

  • @freezazoid you and the people you hang out with must be straight pussies :P

  • @pwitte777 haha. yeah because the people who go to shows like this are so wild. Everyone sitting down, politely clapping after each song. Maybe on the ride home listen to NPR. Then just before bed feed the the golden retriever and throw on some john scofield or maybe dave matthews. Yeah.... super wild.

  • @freezazoid I have to say, I love the sound of this personally. Then again I'm into a lot of experimental and noise music. Who cares how the majority reacts? Put on Pokerface and most rooms will lose their shit. This guy has a unique sound and is an incredible musician. This song conveys a certain uneasiness and awkwardness that is so prevalent in life but a bit more absent in music. Appreciate it for what it is, and if you don't like listening to it then don't and stop trolling lol

  • Actually most of what Bass Desires plays is rather straightforward. It's good to see them getting loose here! Bill's phenomenal control and tone choice shines on this solo.

  • Bill Frisell can be the most melodic guitarist in jazz, when he wants to.

  • This is great! Frisell has been one of my biggest influences.

The full video of this where you can see Scofield acting like a jerk to Frisell, is better than just this snippet of a solo. The crowd didn't even clap for Frisell after his solo. It's obvious that Frisell hasn't gotten the attention he deserves and this video had to be done in 1987 or 1988!

  • do not criticise the things that other people do and start doing something of your own.

  • "They're not even notes, just noises."

its all vibrations...a fine line exists between having an opinion and being ignorant.

  • All you guys ripping on Bill.

The problem is your pea sized brains can't appreciate what this guy is doing...

...And can do over and over in a million different ways.

Bill is ALL about the melody, AND being in tune.

Too bad your ears aren't advanced enough to pick up

    on what he is doing.

    You hear splatter

I hear deep melody and emotion.

The world is big rnough for both of us.

  • Word,The DeLi. Hardest thing after youve acquired as much technique as Frisell is to trust the music will play through you. Miles, Aretha, Ornette and taught us the spaces between the notes, the emotions behind them, makes real musical invention happen (as opposed to musical cliches). All ears are not equipped for harmonic space travel.Duke Ellington once the only music he wanted to hear was 'music beyond category'. Frisell always answers that call.

  • Jesus fuck, they call this music? I call it an aimless series of notes...

  • Right on, man. They're not even notes, just noises.

Give me melodies, give me tight rhythm! Something to grasp, not just wanking!

    Bunch of pseuds.

  • Ok, this particular snippet may be a bit hard to grasp, perhaps even self indulgent at times, but for god's sake, show some respect. You simply cannot call bill frisell, marc johnson, and peter erskine 'a bunch of pseudo's.'That will not stand. These guys are legends. I'm not saying you can't criticize a piece of music, but don't be so ignorant in doing it. For one, the majority of music these guys play is not avant-garde, and most of it is melodic and replete with tight rhythms.

  • oops, sorry about the double post

  • This sucks shit. This is crap!

  • Unlike KEEWEE 'I'm going home (for dinner)' I suppose?

  • haha

  • Is he really bending the neck?

  • yes, you can hear the overtones through all the reverb just like when you barely touch a vibrato arm.

  • More, More

  • great stuff

  • Whoa! They are my favorite band! This is the first time I actually get to see a live footage! If you have more of this show -or anything with them- please, please post it!
