Absolutely love that rhythmic drumming that maintains throughout the whole song. The toms, roto-toms and Chinese cymbal sound so sweet. Of course the whole band sounds fantastic. Might be my favorite song from them.
@mcgwire7199 They absolutely belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It's like those classic actors who never got Oscars, what's the point of the awards if the most deserving never get them? ;)
Ahh...classic TFF! This song is both raw and ahead of its time. Roland is amazing and Curt's bass playing is so effortless! Compare this to some of the vacuous, superficial pop on Satellite Radio or FM today...no comparison.
You know they are true musicians because every time they sang live, they sounded just as good as the record. Can't say the same for most musicians today!
I grew up listening to these guys, complete with curt smith plait. I feel sorry for today's youth that they are lumbered with total dross. I'm very privilaged.
dam i love this song. it has real meaning!!actually pretty much all their songs have real meaning and r good!!unlike this new "now-a-day" crap!!!it dont even make sense!!!we have a lil 16 yr old (justin beiber)talkin bout love and stuff!!!but if thats wat thee world is coming too, then so be it!!just as long as i got some TEARS FOR FEARS and GOOD music im all chill!!!
Yes this voice is remarkable, He has great pitch, a great range and great emotional tone. And only 22? Good Lord - he is so polished. Was he ever vocally trained? I know he dabbled in theatre. Well - I bow in awe, sir.
I remember that year (1983) so vividly: rising unemployment (same as now), nuclear war looming in Europe, wars in Salvador, Lebanon, Afghanistan. It looked as though we were truly watching the start of a 'civilizational' breakdown...
Roland is really talented.his voice is particularly strong and lends itself well to the despair of the song.i like his guitar playing though he himself claims he s not too good.this song is just so moody ,there's an "over the edge"quality to it
God i love this band and i live 1 mile down the road from where this was recorded at thier home :P best bast ever just behind depeche mode and pink floyd a close 3rd :P:P
Please let's not start another Curt vs Roland war. I haven't paid very much attention to either since they broke up and got back together again but they're both such accomplished musicians.
I hadn't paid much attention to this song before someone commented that Curt received no camera time on this vid. The bass in this IS outstanding. I don't believe Curt has ever been recognized for the fact that he IS a bass player. A very good bass player. Go Curt! We love you!
One of the reasons the Hurting stands out above the other albums released during this time is because of the excellent arrangements in the songs, very sophisticated, especially for a debut album. And yes, Curt's bassplaying goes underrated, but not by me..
Thanks kittiebaby for putting the words i myself wanted to say for Curt...he IS a great bass player, and especially on this song. BTW, those who missed seeing Curt playing his bass in this vid, there's another video from jezzy with better camera time of Curt with the same song :-) check it out
Definately on my top 10 favorite TFF songs. I feel like Im lost in space, some sort of paralel universe, hard to explain, that's how much I love this song. Great band, Roland, you're awesome!
Curt's bass work is amazing and Manny's drum playing style should be a dream for any budding drummers. Roland's guitar work is also really interesting here (check out 2:28-3:08). I like the way he pops those strings. I think he probably he played some bass parts on the guitar as well. The guitar solos are also awesome.
This is a rare video and a very good live version!
Roland's guitaring and Curt's bass playing were just brilliant. Of course, Andy Davies' keyboard work, Ian Stanley's synth programming and keyboard playing and Manny's innovative drumming were all equally good!
Diam.. He sure can shout out his emotions. 0_0
And that was a lame joke. LoL
