  • I'm Japanese native and I can say the guy in this video sounds unnatural. This sounds like he tried to pronounce with ra, ri, ru, re, ro. But, actual Japanese sound is close to La, Li, Lu, Le, Lo.

  • Japanese らりるれろ、ラリルレロ is close to La, Li, Lu, Le, Lo. 3/4 sound of European L sound. Clear Japanese ラリルレロ is never with rounded R sound.

  • Japanese CAN distinguish the sound difference of English L and R. But, they are not used to pronounce them differently. They will be able to pronounce them properly with practicing. Their old ancestors decided to make it in between because some can't pronounce them. Japanese L is pronounced EL. (エル) and R is pronounced "A-Le", AAl, or AL (アール). Japanese ラリルレロ is pronounced more like La, Li, Lu, Le, Lo. That's why they are not good with rounded R sound

  • Okay, the 'r' here really sound more like 'l' for me

But, how come whenever I listen to a Japanese song the 'r' is really 'r'

If you know what I mean....

  • i'm hearing an "L" sound

Like: la li lu le lo

    ...that's not righ, is it?

  • @NioushaXD

Different Japanese dialects pronounce it differently. Ideally, it's a combination of "l" and "r" (if you study linguistics it would be an alveolar trill or rolling r). People who cannot pronounce it properly (as it's never used in English) say either "r" or "l".

I hope this helps. I am taking a Japanese class as part of my linguistics program here at Brock University, and it took me about a week of practice to get the sound right.

  • @NioushaXD You are correct. Japanese らりるれろ、ラリルレロ is never with rounded R sound. That's why many of Japanese can't pronounce American R or Spanish R sound.

  • its so hard to make that sound

  • Arigato ^.^ I've been looking for the right pronounciation for these =D

  • what does that mean tho?

  • They alone don't mean anything, but with other hiragana symbols they can make words ^.^

Don't ask me for one from the top of my head though xD

  • oh. kakoii

  • Thanks, just what I am searching for.

  • together with fu this is the most difficult for me to pronounce...

it actually sounds more like la li lu le lo ..right?

  • Thank you for commenting.

In the pronunciation of the Japanese, it is not good at pronunciation

    of "R".

The pronunciation as which "L" and "R" are the same is done.

  • doi dashimashite

  • toyota san , otsukaresama deshita....arigato gozaimashita!!!
