Seriously ford, the W123 was probably the best car ever built. The Mercedes W123 series is still the best selling Mercedes chassis to date over 2 million were made. One of the most common cars in Africa and the middle east today. 60% of the cars registered in Morocco are W123 240Ds. I own a euro spec 84 300D with 332,000 kilometers on the original engine and transmission. I doubt a ford granada could do that. Oh yeah I still see W123s on the road and the last granada I saw was in a junk yard.
@Marklin15 I'm not saying the commercial is absolutely correct but your comment is just opposite dumbassery. People who worship a name and pay 5 times as much for what comes out of it are automatically, naturally, of course going to maintain and preserve what they bought. The Granada was something to buy and use. The Mercedes was an investment.
The 300D is a diesel, hardly comparable to any gasoline engine in any way.
We had a Ford Granada as a company car. It got nicknamed the Grenade. We thought the piece of crap would blow up. It was poorly made and could not be confused with a Mercedes unless you were brain dead.
Ford's print ads for the Granada were the same. One ad compared it to the Mercedes 240D and the VW Rabbit - all totally different cars for different market segments. I still see many Rabbits, especially at VW shows, and many 240Ds, but a Granada? Not in at least 10 years.
Anybody who couldn't tell a Ford Granada apart from a Mercedes should not have been allowed out in public! Clearly quite ridiculous even by the standards of the day...
Then again, Car&Driver magazine basically compared the 1978 Ford Fairmont to the contemporary Volvo GL when it came out. Later they tried to do the same thing with the 1986 Ford Taurus to the Audi 5000. The FoMoCo cars were not competitors (or designed as such) to any of these cars
LOLOLOL That car was a pile of crap it suck gas like a pig compare to a Mercedes well the Mercedes is still driving probably the Ford has been melted down lol
You've got to wonder whether an ad like this is self-defeating. The person that's confusing the Granada for the Mercedes is a bumbling fool--not exactly the image you want to convey when you're trying to pass your car off as something pseudo-suave!
@grabbber , no doubt the 302 were a great engine, and I have nothing against Granadas, but we had a 1971 Mercedes 220D in our family that we drove 750k miles with the same engine, so Mercedes absolutely know how to make engines that lasts...
@grabbber mercedes diesels (like the one in the vid can run well over 250k. There are many for sale with over 300k, and some for sale with over 500k miles. A 1976 240D (same series of engine as the car in the vid) has the record as a greek taxi with over 1.5 MILLION miles.
@DamnStraightM35A2 You can't compare a Diesel Engine to a Gasoline engine... For the sticker price of the Granada 4k vs Mercedes 20k , the choice is clear Granada did it's job and did it well for 4k.
@grabbber Yeah, if the Granada is 4k, my '78 Mercedes was around 14k.
If the Granada lasted 8 years, then you would have to buy 4 of them over 32 years, which is 16k or more. Or buy one Mercedes for 14k and it would easily last 32 years, with plenty more left in it.....
@1979lincolncoupe from what ive heard, some of these asian cars, keep going, and oddly wont stop lol. ahh well, i miss hte old car days. this new stuff idk
Yes this did. It's called Bluetec; which is the successor to the 1980s Mercedes Diesel models.

Ford couldn't get enough in 1978 with the Ford - Mercedes commercial. They had to come up with a CLASSIC in 1979. LOL
