I have a Xbox Elite and can tell you that the DVD drive indeed can be a bit noisey sometimes when its reading. It's such a great gaming machine, tho.

no the oldest ones are the 20gb ones and the core, then they ditched the core and sold the arcade and the 20gb. soon after they upgraded the 20gb to 60gb and released the elite with a 120gb hard drive. at the moment all i can find is the arcade and the elite but they may still be selling 60gb's.

Bad Idea standing it on its side...get ready for scratched disks.

Also don't plug it into a surge strip, a line conditioner or an extension cord. Microsoft corp claims it can break the brick and the xbox 360.

The 360 brick has a built in surge protector and line conditioner..having two in the line causes red ring, e74 and other issues.

well its a pain using that method. you can buy a 360 off ebay with ixtreme 1.41 8x speed benq drive which means its even quieter & can play backups online safely.

It has pads for standing on it's side too. There's a fan at the base that is made free when you put it on it's side so you're essentially freeing up one fan for another. It is designed to go sideways.

my old one had the same problem, your disc spindle isn't level while vertical so the laser can't read it. when horizontal, gravity is pulling it down so it's close to level so the laser can read the disc. Eventually, you're going to either have to send your xbox into microsoft or take apart you xbox to level the disc spindle in the drive... if you have a hitachi it's easy. i have a vid up about this if you want to take a look at it.

Well, now I'm going to list everything you didn't. The PS3 has WI-FI, yes, but horrid online play. The PS3 weighs a fucking ton. The PS3 has no games. Rumble isn't a last gen feature. The PS3 isn't 4D as it is claimed to be. PS3 doesn't have the full online experience. The 360 has an amazing online sevrice. Xbox Live is only 8 bucks a year. Who cares? 360 has a wide array of games. 360 HAS a friend list. 360 has downloadable content for most games. Now what's better? It seems pretty obvious.

I noticed that the vents that are on the bottom of your console are not away from the surface. I would rest the console on a slightly raised surface. I do for mine. And those peeps who set their console vertically, I would consider raising the console above the surface for maximum heat protection for your consoles.

The noise is not really a problem to me, and if you do get the three red lights just press the power button on the xbox 360 twice and your 360 will be fine.
