No wonder most fishing videos pan away when they're clubbing the fish in the head. Sarah Palin had a point when she called people who buy halibut (or other animals) hypocrites for criticizing fishermen and hunters. The only really humane thing to do is be vegan, but I'm not that dedicated.
nice video man, lots of nice halibut. i never seen so much halibut caught like that before, and i have been fishing them for years. where abouts were you off the coast of BC? i fish around the dixon entrance
So umm are you suggesting to put down the club and use a gun...perhaps lethal injection? Or are you talking about how im hangling the halibut....perhaps I should cradle them in my arms and gently lay the docile creatures on the deck?
hahahah thvats the most funniest shi t i have evr heard halibut aint extremely dangerous i go halibut fishing and not sport fishing for them either for a living and i have never heard tell of a halibut hurting anyone lmao
the halibut has an EXTREMELY strong body made up almost entirely of muscle. many anglers in the past have gotten there ribs broken from a powerful halibut flopping around the deck. this is why when a large one is caught people often shoot them in the head.
They don't? Do a search for the terms halibut charter. 222,000+ results, and that doesn't even count the sports anglers who go after them in their own boats.
I'm thinking it has more to do with location rather than depth...we fish @ 90-110 fathoms but they hang out in a variety of depths...They feed off of plankton...try finding a reef and fish the edge...the fresher the bait the better
i'm a sport-fisherman...obviously the technique is different...BUT in the end you put on the right bait, put it in the right place, wait the right amount of time, reel up the fish and do the "humane" thing and kill what you catch that if it's going to be eaten; release what you can.
sounds like good (sports-)fishing to me.
in this case only done by real professionals!!!

Well Michael, I am from Haida Gwaii...I know what exactly what these guys feel like, obviously you know nothing about commercial fishing. I can out fish you any day of the week. Tree huggers suck..people who work and provide for others rock! where do they think Mrs Paul gets her fish from? the fish fairy? Great video guys keep it up...Arizona fish lover
Correction... we do bleed them...we assign one person to dehook and bleed...but he's running the camera...I bleed them when there is a lull in the string or when were running to the next string...bleeding makes for a cleaner fish when dressing. We land them off the west coast of BC (Queen Charlottes)
Thanks for that info. I am a lobster fisherman from Nova Scotia. We make the odd halibut trip as well. There is no bigger thrill than seeing those big flat fellers coming up. Here's hoping the Canada dollar does not affect the price this next season.
bah. i guess links don't post in comments. But your belief that larger females don't produce more is the misconception. search it. i tried posting links but they don't go.
tree hugger comments are based on nothing but ignorance. The way these fish are harvested is sustainable. they generally take the small to lower middle sized fish as they are the better eating fish anyways. Although these fish are big in terms of fish most people catch, they are small in terms of halibut. If they knew anything, they would know that a bigger threat would be the trophy hunters who target those large reproducing females.
Actually, the larger females do not produce more eggs than any other adult female; this is a misconception used by many fishermen as a way to attack in jealousy others who kill trophy fish.
These are honest men, making an honest living! God Bless ya'll!! Halibut season is a short one,..and it is closely monitored in North America. If you other people are looking for the real enemy of this type of fish and these hard working people,..It's Exxon, The Exxon Valdize killed more halibut and sea life than any other thing in history. its lucky and amazing they are fishing forthis awsome fish.
Good on you Kneadol! People dont realize hoe regulated commercial fishing is. If what you are doing was causing any harm to the Halibut population, the regulations would but much more strict. (As it is with crab fishing) What do people want you to do? Be a bum, and beg for change in front of the 7/11? Keep doing what you do!
You guys are the rapists of the sea. That is not fishing. It is harvesting fish for profit, there is a big difference. BTW how dumb/naive is the person filming, its like they are candy coating a horrible travesty, totally unaware of what they are watching.
Were making an honest living...You have a strange way of looking at things...your so out of touch with reality...How many times were you dropped on your head as an infant?
hey mate i am a cray fisherman from western australia !!! love the ocean loved the video if there is ever a job over yr way i am keen as ! i drive a sixty foot fiberglass boat here ill have to post a video so u can see how it works !!! nice job anyway
small ones MUST be thrown back. Unless there's been a change, it's 35" minimum. They're not even allowed to have anything smaller on-board (kept for themselves, for example) while engaged in commercial activities.
Long-line fishing is a commercial fishing technique that uses hundreds or even thousands of baited hooks hanging from a single line. Swordfish, tuna, halibut, sablefish and Patagonian toothfish are commonly caught by this method.
you guys do a good job and it the people over in china who fish out there waters when they kill sharks for comiceal fishing all they take is there fins and throw the defined shark back in the water to die of drowding.
Fisherman rock!! being an ex commercial fisherman from Gabriola Island BC I have a deep respect for the men and women who go to sea and bring us back the best food in the world, and to those of you that are opposed,, go fuck yourselves,, and oh yeah,, when you wipe your asses, think of the tree that died so you wouldnt have skidmarks,,
pay no mind to those brainless assholes that cant grasp what the difference is between buffalo hunters and halibut fisherman,, just to say something that stupid tells me your a retard!,,get a clue dicksmack,, till then shut your cocksucker,,
Just raping the Natural resource. In the end when they destroy all the fish stocks "with the excuse that they have to make a living" then they will be forced to do what they hate the most and "get a decent job" . I see no difference between this and what the greedy buffalo hunters did. These bozos lifestyle is self doomed to extinction. No species can survive this kind of abuse.
Nice Vid I'm a commercial fisherman in Alaska Halibuting in my favorite. I just bought a digital camera gonna go take vid of my fisheries, salmon herring, halibut, Commercial diving. watch for vids!!
I'm not sure if it's the fish or the boat hes trying to kill. One year we made the mistake of using an aluminum bat as a club...but it quickly improved our accuracy...lmao
We fish relatively close to Alaska so my guess is they would be close in size...a reputable charter should help land you a nice catch. Bring your camera and share your footage..
I agree Halibut is one of the best regulated fish there is. But for me the disturbing part is that halibut can easily grow over 5-6 feet and i think that largest can get close to 7-8 feet in length and 4-6 hundred lbs maybe more. From the look of your catch they mostly seem to be 1/2 that size and at the end of the video your pulling in fish that honestly look too small to be regulation size to keep and yet u still clubed them and kept them??
The commercial minimum regualtion size of a halibut is 32in ~20lbs...we have 32in marked on our hatch cover...in the video you see me measuring & releasing. The look is deceiving when a small one is laying along side a larger halibut... makes the smaller one look undersized. We would be penalized for keeping any undersized halibut upon delivery.
I agree with what your saying...we would be more than happy to release the smaller sized fish (bigger the fish...the more we get per lbs) but regulations say were not allowed to hi-grade our catch. The sport fishery is exempt from the 32in min size and I feel it should be imposed.
WHat depth are you fishing in.. I only do sports butt fishing, and deapest is maybe 400ft...Nice catch and super filming..nice when they don't come up wild...cheers
Approximately 600 ft...it's more to do with location than depth...halibut can be landed from various depths...Our gear is hauled after soaking for 4hrs so most come up tired as hell.
Yes, I understand you now; with the ol power-winch is working pretty good in this video; and I agree with the comments that you have made previously; what this young fellow is doing (flipping) 40-150 lb butts on board is skill and technique; DAMM nice BUTTS; Hope you got a good price for them..Cheers
Unfortunately sports fisherman can keep the small ones... its upsetting to see them on display down at the dock when they unload. Halibut should be given a chance to grow to a decent length regardless of the fishery. It's regulated on the commercial side but not the recreational.
Pathetic. Snap-on green horns running around with their shiny gaff hooks. Not even a 5 foot sea. Probably see the dock from that 36 foot aluminum skiff.
Halibut don't even fight back in the video. Let me guess, you soaked the gear 5 days?
Oh Jamner...you clueless newbus...obviously you didn't watch the whole video...Gear is soaked for 4hrs not 120hrs and may be left to soak overnight if we catch too many on the 1st two strings. In these waters, if gear is left to soak for 5 days...the halibut would be prone to predators and lice and would yield no catch. The video camera is only used when the sea is calm.
I'd have to agree with the Yanks on that...It's not the most lovely looking fish in the world... In my opinion...it's size, strength and taste makes it a great fish...To which species of fish do you have great admiration for?
ohh ok cause i work on a fish boat to a thirty eight foot troller and i fish area h and g and troll a small halibut quota so i was inthuised to see some one else who fished halibut
Your comment reminds me of a time when we loaded the deck and had to release the halibut as they came up. The fish on deck would fill the hold to capacity, we had no choice but to release the remaining quarter string.
To all dumbasses that are saying this is cheating shut up they are commercial fishermen making money I'm going fishing for them in homer alaska

The sport fishery is exempt from the 32in min size and I feel it should be imposed.

awesome i guess 4$ lb is good i flounder fish w/ gillnets happy to get 2$ lb

I've gill netted/trolled in the past and feel the price is under rated. Last year trolled sockey was $3 lb and gill nets received $1 lb.

WHat depth are you fishing in.. I only do sports butt fishing, and deapest is maybe 400ft...Nice catch and super filming..nice when they don't come up wild...cheers
Mooseracks 4 years ago
Approximately 600 ft...it's more to do with location than depth...halibut can be landed from various depths...Our gear is hauled after soaking for 4hrs so most come up tired as hell.

Yes, I understand you now; with the ol power-winch is working pretty good in this video; and I agree with the comments that you have made previously; what this young fellow is doing (flipping) 40-150 lb butts on board is skill and technique; DAMM nice BUTTS; Hope you got a good price for them..Cheers

I think it's more to do with you not knowing WTF your doing...
Kneadol 4 years ago
Good to see, that the smaller ones were released.
So there is hope, that the population is still there, when i can afford to come to Canada one day ...

Unfortunately sports fisherman can keep the small ones... its upsetting to see them on display down at the dock when they unload. Halibut should be given a chance to grow to a decent length regardless of the fishery. It's regulated on the commercial side but not the recreational.

I love halibut fishing. I spent a lot of time in Alaska, I lived in Seattle, just fishing for those. my arms would ache by the time the day was done.
mrkite53 4 years ago
Pathetic. Snap-on green horns running around with their shiny gaff hooks. Not even a 5 foot sea. Probably see the dock from that 36 foot aluminum skiff.
Halibut don't even fight back in the video. Let me guess, you soaked the gear 5 days?
Pfft.
Jamner 4 years ago
Oh Jamner...you clueless newbus...obviously you didn't watch the whole video...Gear is soaked for 4hrs not 120hrs and may be left to soak overnight if we catch too many on the 1st two strings. In these waters, if gear is left to soak for 5 days...the halibut would be prone to predators and lice and would yield no catch. The video camera is only used when the sea is calm.
Kneadol 4 years ago
predators? what is the world would go after these fish? crab?
superwoofer2007 4 years ago
Sleeper sharks will feast on hooked halibut

yanks think that halibut are great fish, try fishing in australia. hahahaha
thom2283 5 years ago
I'd have to agree with the Yanks on that...It's not the most lovely looking fish in the world... In my opinion...it's size, strength and taste makes it a great fish...To which species of fish do you have great admiration for?

Kneadol 5 years ago
ive never seen that many at once and that big either!
bigbadlove777 5 years ago
Your comment reminds me of a time when we loaded the deck and had to release the halibut as they came up. The fish on deck would fill the hold to capacity, we had no choice but to release the remaining quarter string.
Kneadol 5 years ago
where were you fishing on the coast?
VarixBC 5 years ago
The north end of he Queen Charlotte Islands
