  • Back in the 70's, there used to be a show called Dean Martin Roasts, a lot of those old shows are on youtube. There would be a panel of celebrities sitting on a stage with a podium at the center, and some Black celebrities of that time were often on the show.Everyone would basically crack jokes on each other, and A LOT of jokes would be considered EXTREMELY offensive on that show in our time. We'll have arrests over Politically "Incorrect" speech and expression before long.Welcome to Orwell's1984

  • Hiring a white model for 'blackface' is racist...good job i dont look at vogue.

  • FORGET THIS..... I CAN'T UNTIL GOD HANDLE THESE SUCKERS!!!

  • I didnt find the model offensive me being black french and native american.

  • im not trying to be mean but i don't understand why blackface is racist. can somebody please explain to me why it is racist. cause im just confused

  • @aglewi41

why do you need a "black face" for if your not white in the first place?

  • @aglewi41 it's not people are just sensitive and insecure

  • MrBlackfish011 actually that was 1800-1960 he even put the name and date on there.

that time being the american popularization of blackface.

the comic is disneys original cartoon.

  • I think it was just a form of art, why is that so taboo? They could have gotten a black model, but using black-face puts more controversy and interest into the picture. And isnt that what art is about, its about hitting emotions and making you think.

  • @MrBlackfish011 Probably because racism is still a strong aspect of normal everyday life already...now we have to tolerate it in the fashion world?

  • Interesting

  • Black face was bad cause it was shown that way.

When shown in a different light as like

"being black faced cause I love the culture oppose to making fun of " is different.

  • CNN is wrong. It wasn't "popularised decades ago" Rather by 1830's - as in the biggest form of entertainment at one point.

    its message?

says black slaves are lazy "sambos", who are loyal to masters & love to work on plantations because its good for them

& freed slaves are "zip coon" lazy, wear fancy clothes, listen to music & rape white women & destroy society & without slaver revert back to "savagery"

    supported slavery - racist

See utube video "Racsim in America. Who kept it Alive?"

  • i agree they coulda got a beauitful black women to do the shoot.

  • I don't know, I quite like it actually, specially the picture where she was wearing that outfit from john galliano's fall collection, i think it's like a mix of ethnic african and russian..

that's my opinion though, maybe vogue just can't find a black model who has the look of a european model..

  • They should have used black models since they wanted a black skin. I think of Josephine Baker a black entertainer, when she died they treated her like royalty. She was truly loved. Gave her a funeral befitting a queen, so I cannot say they had racist intent but someone is stupid and unfeeling.

  • why is simply painting your face black mean one is being racist.Shouldn't intent come into play. i am a drama teacher. And i have organised school plays where students have worn make up when playing a character. My intent has always been about the performance. Racism had never entered my mind. I too have been guilty of changing the skin colour of performers, to enhance the performance. And why does painting a performer face black, automatically get labelled Blackface isn't that just generalizing?

  • know your history its not as simple as you try to make it out to be

  • Blackface is not racist and never was. Get over it sometime in between now, and now.

  • @Shelter1284 Black face was racist it was created to put down and make fun of blacks.Sounds pretty racist to me.

  • Fashion can never be separated from politics in our global life nowadays. Very poor judgement on the part of the French Vogue. The fact that black models did not make it into the top fashion models in that particular issue does raise political issues in the light of the history of black people in the USA and Europe. Best models often serve as inspiration and a muse regardless of their skin color. The effect in this case is of bad taste and offensive.

  • It's racist and wrong but I think they just didn't have a clue. They were trying to create exotic beauty and got it horribly wrong.

People are often ignorant about what's outside their world. They should have done research and consulted black fashion editors or experts who would have set them straight.

Blackface is not part of French history as far as I know. In the 1930's black American artists like Josephine Baker went to France to work and have a better life.

  • Blackface is never ok. It's racist and offensive. Why didn't Vogue just use a black model instead? Are they suggesting that there are no beautiful black models out there so they have to paint a white model black!!??

  • You hit it on the head for me. That's exactly what I was thinking. Why couldn't they have just hired a black model to do the spread? Iman, Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell, Jessica White etc etc. It's like they're saying only a white woman is pretty enough to pull off modeling as a black woman. And they say racism doesn't exist in Europe. BS.
