It would be inpossible to find 4 entertainers from this day and age that combined would have the stature and talent of any one of these gentlemen. The absolute natural ability that they show here in this clip, just incredible!! Just watch their faces, and you can see how much they enjoyed just being together and delighting a very lucky audience.
@Rittisan Frank was about 5'8" (according to many sources). The shorty of the group was Samila, who was around 5/6". All 4 of them, giants in talent and class.
Lady Gaga & Justin Bieber have nothing on the Rat Pack...I've been trying to work out an exchange with God, but he's enjoying them too much to deal with artists like Gaga or "Bieber Fever..."
I still don't get what the fuck do people have so much against Bieber or Gaga..
Not saying I like their music myself, but Gaga has a music academy behind her and Bieber has a really ok vocals, and I believe I saw him playing drums really well. They are both talented, and the fact that we don't like that kind of music doesn't give us any right to belittle them.
What made this so great was that they were having the time of their life. They were at the prime of their life and the world was their oyster. They loved each other and they were the the original bromance.
Just pure awesome entertainment! They truly did own the place wherever/whenever they played. It would be nice to turn back time to see these guys again live! It's so nice to see them on YouTube when ya need to SMILE!
Folks, when those three -- Sammy, Deano, and the Chairman -- walked onto a stage together, they owned the room, the building that housed it, the city and country where it was located, and the whole damn planet. Nobody performing today has that kind of gravitas.
This was entertainment....and I was a bit too young to appreciate it when it was happening. Give anything to take the time machine for a spin back to then.....
Oh, Dino Martini. Always one to get a laugh. My God I wish I could've seen these guys live. This is clearly a time when music was very much alive. Not like today. I'm ashamed to be part of the generation that has put the final nail in the coffin of music. I weep for the world, for soon all trace of theses kings among men will be forgotten. And God knows that music was one thing the world needed.
R.I.P Frank, Sammy, and Dean. I'm glad you didn't live to see your art die. You were spared that.

I grew up on the beatles but in later years I grew to really love this kind of music. This era was so great.....there was nothing that a cigarette, martini and and a fast convertable couldn't cure
@inkey2 Great comment ! I totally agree with you. The standrads they sang are timeless and Even though smoking is looked down upon, it seems to work for them and their act. Even the old movies where everyone smoked just looked classy and cool. today people make people feel guilty for even making comments like ours.
@NFitalianGuy__ in my opinion smoking is no more dangerous than riding a motorcycle......your first motorcycle ride could kill you.....yet no one ever died from their first cigarette. Granted, smoking is not good for you but there are things just as "dangerous"....or worse that people do every day and think nothing of it....jay walking, joining the military, binge drinking, sun bathing, bad diet, construction worker.....I could go on and on
@inkey2 Well said and very true. I Smoke and I know it can harm me but so many things can harm or kill us faster and more suddenly than a little paper rolled up with tobacco. Until they outlaw smoking, people who smoke should have the same rights that non smokers do. Blowing smoke into peoples' faces is wrong but they take it too far. Getting drunk is more dangerous because that is a way that can kill others immediately. Life today is just too PC.
This was a great bunch of guys!. The Rat pack was a generation before me, but I remember them very well. Sammy is the one that said "how does it feel to sit at the back of the bus?" to Johnny who was trying to get closer to the mic (In a satirical manner refering to the racial times of the era. ie. Rosa Parks)
This is all staged when he fell. It's still funny and I love these guys but just heard a clip on youtube where they invited Judy Garland up on stage to sing this same song with them.Even though it's just an audio of them singing this song, you can hear that dean fell during the song. It just proves that Dean wasn't really a huge drinker the way he portrayed. He was a huge talent and I think his voice was just as smooth and impressive as Sinatra's Voice.
Besides Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, and Frank Sinatra who is that man singing with them ? And was it Dean who said "how does it feel to sit at the back of the bus ?"
@oneidagurly - the man singing with them is Johnny Carson. I think the 'back of the bus' comment was mad to Dean Martin because he wasn't being allowed to sing up that point..

Is this like SO much fun. I always wanted to be a member of the Rat Pack or have something like. And @johnnybagofdonets, you are so right. It's music that helps breaks a lot of barriers - amen to Frank for that contribution.
Is this like SO much fun. I always wanted to be a member of the Rat Pack or have something like. And johnnybagofdonets, you are so right. It's music that helps breaks a lot of barriers - amen to Frank for that contribution.
@Iluvmyboy18 - Thanks for your reply. I'll do a search to see where I might get the set. I grew up with these guys and I get tears just watching them again. No matter what was going on in the world at that time, no matter how bad things were or seemed to be, they brightened our days. We were so blessed to have their wonderful music and good humor. Thanks again.
@Iluvmyboy18 -- You are so lucky to have those sets. I'm checking around to find where I can order dvd sets of the Rat Pack and the old Dean Martin shows.
In my youth, I played in the house band at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas: 25 years old playing behind Sammy and Frank. A good 18 years after this clip was filmed...all three of them were older and not as lively...Frank had lost range and they were rarely in LV at the same time...yet, when Frank and Sammy were on, it was incredible....even after 2 shows a night for 6 nights, these guys truly were top entertainers.
Notice how they're not lip syncing? Notice how there's no army of half-naked back-up dancers? Notice how there's no crazy lighting or smoke effects? You see, these guys actually had a thing called 'talent'. All they needed was a mic and some music.
@TenderTrap86 Not only these guys had talented and further, all must recognize the orchestra, whom are Count Basie’s guys, as top musicians. No-doubt, this is entertainment at its finest. Hopefully, the new jacks in music business will take a lesson from these guy’s in bringing music and entertainment back to a higher standard instead of worrying about dividend disbursements from recording labels via the (plagiarize) garbage they produce.
@johnnybagofdonets Yeah, I think people are starting to get sick of the over-theatrcial nature of the music industry. Except, the kids of course. The Rat Pack was for adults, but kids could still enjoy. Their jokes were suggestive at times, but never crude. That was considered low class. It still is, even though people think otherwise because their sense of humor isn't mature enough. PS Great Frank story. I can't believe I'm talking with somebody who actually met him! Where did that take place?
@EoN604 -- I remember watching that show when Dean fell, and I always wondered if it was planned. However, the thing about these guyswas that they just went as the Spirit led them.....nothing was usually planned.
These are the guys that made it happen....how awesome to have these video's to live some of the past I wasn't able to. I love this era and I'm so glad to see Dean, Sammy, Frank, and the other RAT PACK artists perform. And of course I love and sorely miss Johnny Carson! Great times!
@Onion241 Haha I know, right - who knew?! I remember when Johnny died, Jerry Lewis said that he had so much more talent than he ever let us know he had... I'm only now starting to realise how true that was!
awesome, awesome awesome, There will never be another RatPack, there will never be another era as great as this one... it's too bad I wasn't born then to see it, I bet it was amazing!!
Stunning! I thought this was from Las Vegas, but it was in St. Louis, and reputedly the only time when Johnny Carson sang! (not too bad either). Dino, Sammy and Frank are in rare form too. The good ole' Rat Pack Days! (I love the ORIGINAL "Ocean's 11" which starred these guys plus Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford, and showed Las Vegas "back in the day"....
@recovering16 Johnny Carson had sung earlier on Jack Benny's show. He sang "Ballin' the Jack." During "The Tonight Show," Johnny impersonated Willie Nelson to sing with Julio Inglesias.
I get irked when I hear modern entertainers saying that Sammy was a bit of a suck up to the rest of them. The people who made that comment never even saw a, "Whites Only" sign. Real sad that all of them are gone. Johnnybagofdonets, thanks for mentioning that about Sinatra. I didn't know that. I think Sammy was one of the best singers to ever grace our planet.
@Davethreshold -- Sammy was no suck up. You would never see "whte only" signs. The fact is, Dean and Frank wouldn't accept gigs at p[aces that weren't open to blacks. The three of them were family and came as a package. It might shock some people, but the whites in those times -- in my corner of the nation -- couldn't care less about the color of a person's skin. Only a certain class of people had a color problem -- down south. The rest of us whites wouldn't associate with such people.
@MyrnaMcGhie Please note: I wasn't saying Sammy was a suck-up. I heard some people say that back in the day. To me Sammy was a pace setter......a PIONEER for other minorities. He was always one of my favorites. I am glad the others were sticking up for him. I am 58. From what I saw, racism was the NORM back then, as disgusting as that thought is now. Every time you hear about any famous Black person back then, you also here of all the racism that they had to put up with.
@Davethreshold -- thanks for clearing that up...I just didn't want you or anyone to think Sammy was less than he was....he was awesome and as far as I know everyone loved him. There were all kinds of black entertainers back in the 50s and 60s, trios and quartets and various singing groups, including the Jackson Five, and I never heard of anyone that had a problem with them because of color. However, we saw a lot of awful racial problems on television -- mostly in the south. Thanks again.
@MyrnaMcGhie Oh, no problem. :) I loved him along with the whole Rat Pack. I miss all of them. :( There's an old Sammy album that I want to track down on vinyl. I bet Ebay will have it.
@recovering16 On June 20, 1965, Sinatra, Martin, and Davis, with Johnny Carson as the emcee (subbing for Bishop, who was out with a bad back), performed their only televised concert together during the heyday of the Pack at the Kiel Opera House in St. Louis, a closed-circuit broadcast done as a fundraiser for Dismas House (the first halfway house for ex-convicts).
@spudnutsncoffee I'm sure glad they recorded it for posterity! I got a lot of positive comments when I posted it on my Facebook wall. Thank you for the info.
I love this little vid !! So wonderful to hear Sammy singing one of his great signature songs.. also terrific to see Johnny Carson joining in.. what fun !! Thanks for posting!!

@sophiecestmoi He said today. Micheal Jackson isn't alive to match them. Besides, compared to the Pack, MJ is nothing.

Is this like SO much fun. I always wanted to be a member of the Rat Pack or have something like. And @johnnybagofdonets, you are so right. It's music that helps breaks a lot of barriers - amen to Frank for that contribution.

In my youth, I played in the house band at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas: 25 years old playing behind Sammy and Frank. A good 18 years after this clip was filmed...all three of them were older and not as lively...Frank had lost range and they were rarely in LV at the same time...yet, when Frank and Sammy were on, it was incredible....even after 2 shows a night for 6 nights, these guys truly were top entertainers.
minstein 1 year ago
@minstein -- Oh my gosh....you played behind Sammy and Franks in the band. What an honor that must have been.

We will NEVER NEVER EVER see this type of ENTERTAINMENT again.

Hey guys we still have American Idol and America's Got Talent!
;o)
sunnfun 1 year ago
Notice how they're not lip syncing? Notice how there's no army of half-naked back-up dancers? Notice how there's no crazy lighting or smoke effects? You see, these guys actually had a thing called 'talent'. All they needed was a mic and some music.
TenderTrap86 1 year ago 3
@TenderTrap86 Not only these guys had talented and further, all must recognize the orchestra, whom are Count Basie’s guys, as top musicians. No-doubt, this is entertainment at its finest. Hopefully, the new jacks in music business will take a lesson from these guy’s in bringing music and entertainment back to a higher standard instead of worrying about dividend disbursements from recording labels via the (plagiarize) garbage they produce.
johnnybagofdonets 1 year ago

(I love the ORIGINAL "Ocean's 11" which starred these guys plus Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford, and showed Las Vegas "back in the day"....
recovering16 1 year ago

Davethreshold 1 year ago
@Davethreshold -- Sammy was no suck up. You would never see "whte only" signs. The fact is, Dean and Frank wouldn't accept gigs at p[aces that weren't open to blacks. The three of them were family and came as a package. It might shock some people, but the whites in those times -- in my corner of the nation -- couldn't care less about the color of a person's skin. Only a certain class of people had a color problem -- down south. The rest of us whites wouldn't associate with such people.
MyrnaMcGhie 1 year ago
@MyrnaMcGhie Please note: I wasn't saying Sammy was a suck-up. I heard some people say that back in the day. To me Sammy was a pace setter......a PIONEER for other minorities. He was always one of my favorites. I am glad the others were sticking up for him. I am 58. From what I saw, racism was the NORM back then, as disgusting as that thought is now. Every time you hear about any famous Black person back then, you also here of all the racism that they had to put up with.
Davethreshold 1 year ago
@Davethreshold -- thanks for clearing that up...I just didn't want you or anyone to think Sammy was less than he was....he was awesome and as far as I know everyone loved him. There were all kinds of black entertainers back in the 50s and 60s, trios and quartets and various singing groups, including the Jackson Five, and I never heard of anyone that had a problem with them because of color. However, we saw a lot of awful racial problems on television -- mostly in the south. Thanks again.
MyrnaMcGhie 1 year ago
@MyrnaMcGhie Oh, no problem. :) I loved him along with the whole Rat Pack. I miss all of them. :( There's an old Sammy album that I want to track down on vinyl. I bet Ebay will have it.

Lady Gaga and the current music scene talent I respect too ... but this is
a little lesson in ..."Respect for the CLASSICS" ..
We should all make an effort to try to hit a dance floor this week ... and try to have and share fun like they did.
Don't postpone Joy .

What is the background on this? Was this The Tonight SHow? What an incredible collection of icons....
spudnutsncoffee 1 year ago
@spudnutsncoffee I wondered about that too - is it the Tonight Show or was it in a Las Vegas showroom, where Johnny also often appeared?
recovering16 1 year ago
@recovering16 On June 20, 1965, Sinatra, Martin, and Davis, with Johnny Carson as the emcee (subbing for Bishop, who was out with a bad back), performed their only televised concert together during the heyday of the Pack at the Kiel Opera House in St. Louis, a closed-circuit broadcast done as a fundraiser for Dismas House (the first halfway house for ex-convicts).

@spudnutsncoffee I'm sure glad they recorded it for posterity! I got a lot of positive comments when I posted it on my Facebook wall. Thank you for the info.
