  • I'm having problems with the sound on pianojohn113's tutorials. I hear a low-volume sound like a tape being fast forwarded, but no music. The sound is fine on other users videos. I hope it's temporary. Anyone else having this problem?

  • @aeynub This was recorded on the old mono videotape, before You Tube went stereo. You might try putting your computer's main speaker volume tab in the middle or all the way over to the other side. That often clears up the problem.

  • you and the beatles are genious...

  • @amarunarff Thanks, I appreciate it. :-)

  • Stumbled upon your tutorial while listening to Beatles on Youtube. Great visuals, clear instructions, very motivating. Been using simple tabs on sheet music for 30 years. Now I want to get back to my keyboard.

  • hey john, how do you learn these tunes yourself? do get the sheet music or do you pick them out by ear? i think your tutorials are just brilliant, thanx for your time and effort, very much appreciated.

  • @purpleduke77 I learned many of them years ago, just working through each one until it sounds just right. Glad you enjoy them, thanks!

  • awesome tutorial - 10/10

  • Amazing stuff thank you sir. 17 people just can't play Sexy Sadie :)

  • Man, THANK YOU! You are really great! Thank u for all your tutorials, you are brillant!

You are my piano teacher :)

    Kisses from Brazil

  • @ellenfilms Glad you liked it, greetings to you in Brazil, my friend!

  • Brilliant, One Of the best, i would of loved to of herd you finish all the notes in full though

  • you seems to be a very happy man : )

  • I LOVE YOU JOHN!

  • Top notch as always!! Any chance I could request God only knows by the beach boys? Paul would approve!!

  • @Nsmith412 My favorite BW composition of all time.

  • im 13, and learned this in about an hour :) i think this is great and your a very good teacher! seems like you got it all correct, long live beatles!

  • @gantz93710 Glad it helped you! :-)

Sorry for my english.. : D

  • @schaapsploeg ...Just shut up

  • @schaapsploeg Move along, troll, or at least dispense with the sanctimonious attitude. Myself, and his nearly 18,000 subscribers, appreciate the time he's taken to explain songs like this. If dishing out condescending criticism is what makes you feel important in life, think about this: nobody is listening.

  • ahh stop shouting at me :(

  • @schaapsploeg I'll agree with pianojohn......well said.

If you don't thinks it's right watch some other "correct" video. I've seen all the pianojohn songs........I go to them first because they're simple and to the point.

  • @schaapsploeg Unless you were in the studio when the piano part was recorded, you have no idea what the notes are. This is my interpretation, and I say it is correct, just as I stand by all of my tutorials. If you don’t like F-F#, then play it your way. Simple. And no need to “wonder” what the rest of the song is like.. just let it play and listen, then repeat the process with other videos. See the You Tube “Help” section for more information on how to do that.

  • @pianojohn113 the beginning chord does sound a bit high, but I won't go to the extent of questioning your whole tutorial repetoire like that guy. And BTW the rest of the song sounds spot on.

  • @LuminousScope Thanks, I appreciate it. Yes, my issue with that guy wasn't necessarily whether my intro notes were correct, it was more about him calling my entire tutorial into question. If notes sound incorrect, I'm always open to suggestions on changes, as long as the person doing it is at least marginally respectful.

  • <-- I Dont Play Piano.Seems John Did Play Octaves often with the Left Hand, bass(Imagine,Sexy,Love is Real etc) You Pick up his Style Great.I Did notice when You Played The B min It sounded like...Love ...I never noticed that before ahha.Great job!

  • Very helpful! Thanks!

  • This is truly a fantastic tune. I can not play piano, but watching you build the tune up is wonderful. That flip at the start makes it sound like there should have been a few notes at the very beginning but they have been missed off from the recording! But obviously it was written that way. But it makes it sound so fresh. Thanks for posting.

  • @buddhabder Glad you liked it, thanks! I agree, it's a great song.

  • I tried learning this when I first got a piano but it was too hard. Now I can play it. I honestly got chills when I first hit the chords for the "greatest of them all" part.

If you're ever strapped for cash, you could make these into a DVD series. Even though they're all available online for free, I'd definitely support you.

  • @drawboy6x3 Yes, that "greatest of them all" chord was a jazz chord that was rarely heard in pop music at that time. It really makes a difference in this song.

  • Can't stop watching this. Beatles best piano riff, oh. there is Let it Be. it's hard to pick just 1 Beatle favrorite. pianojohn? what's the most challenging, pleasing Beatle piano bit for you? hard to beat Sexy Sadie, right? when you play "the whole thing", awesome, beautiful.

  • great man, but i'm not sure about that first trip.. i usually play D C A and trip those. but i guess it works either way.

  • @sgtpeppers94 Either one is fine.

  • i always stock on the F chord.. just don t get it

  • cool man thanks for sharing

  • Fantastic, might take me a few hard days nights to learn it though

    to sum it up 09:22

  • Just Love it...

    Thanks...

  • so

    kind

  • el comienzo es en RE y MI, ayudado con efecto (ECO), todo lo demas esta bien, solo el comienzo esta mal!

  • your good

  • @meickofreako whose good? His good or my good?

  • el comienzo esta mal

  • Lennon's genius!

  • @gino066 Yep, very typical of Lennon's later Beatle years, with complicated chord structures and repeating patterns.

  • Thanks for the tutorial pianojohn113. Have you heard Radiohead's tribute to this song? Their hit "Karma Police" has some similarities and the band admitted that they were listening to the White Album at that time.

  • I love your tutorials! I've been playing for about a year and learned this in a couple of days -yay! Thank you!

  • its actually in C flat

  • why dont you try with C flat and dont fuck up!! just enjoy if you disagree do your own video !

sorry John but great job . this has helped me a lot!1

  • your on it i have been half assing that sexy sadie intro for to long you got some get back or dont let me down

  • I have the Get Back keyboard solo, and I also have a brief tutorial of Don't Let Me Down.. but that one was done without the overhead camera, so it's probably not quite as useful.

  • I love your videos! You should make more! I see you haven't made one in two months. Have you run out of Beatles songs?

  • lololol - its the equivelant of the bees knees - only quite rude which is why I only put "the dogs" bit.....but the other phrase is...You're the Mutts nuts

  • lol You would NEVER get a bad reputation, we all think you're the dogs ( thats a good thing ). I have learned to play more tunes in 2 weeks with you teaching me than I did in 5 years with my private tutor lol.

  • I've never played piano before and managed to follow this video very easily. Well done! Thank you! ^_^

  • Hi John...I did it, I actually learned how to play this.

You are a really good teacher - your tutorials are the best on you tube....now you gotta do one on "Because " because you promised me in you email lol and you have the voice of a guy who doesn't break his promises xxxx

  • Thanks a lot for all your videos! they have helped me a lot on piano.

  • Thank you thank you thank you *.* :D

  • wow, just awsome! nice explanation

  • I am playing guitar but your description shows how amazing it is on piano this is my most favourite song ever. Thanx

  • Hi John, I never played piano and already have the beginning of Martha My Dear worked out.Your videos are wonderful! You must have the patience of a rock! I hope you're around for a very long time. This is so great!

  • thnaks so much! I just played it! sounds GREAT!

btw, just to be beatle nit-picking - Paul played piano on this song, so I'm guessing the Cm/Gb/Ab bit was Paul's idea in the studio cos' it isnt on John's original demo of the song of how he wrote it

  • Very cool. It's so much simpler than I thought! Your tutuorials are an enjouable way to spend my day off from work!

  • I can't thank you enough for this my friend. One of my all time favorite Beatles songs and I love the piano sound on the recording but it's never sounded right for me just playing the chords. Great job.

  • "use these three fingers (perverted laugh)"

  • Dear John, I remember myself being a 14 year old boy sitting at my piano and trying to figure out the chords and the lines. Over 20 years had to pass by to find out now - on behalf of your video lessons. Thank you a lot!

  • So truly outstanding, i am forever indebted to you for this remarkable tutorial. Keep it up!

  • awesome. you kinda explain things over and over a lot tho. i guess there are some slow people in the world who would need it, nevermind.

  • what is a trip

  • A tripped note is a grace note.. one that's played very quickly into another note, almost as if you'd played it by accident.

  • hi john - thanks for posting this, i've always wanted to learn this song and i'm getting it, slowly... bit by bit but its getting there -thanks!!

  • Hey John, I love your videos. I just started playing a few months ago and have already learned a ton from your videos. I know that you get requests for songs but I thought I would at least ask if you would possibly be interested in doing a tutorial on "Love Reign O'er Me", by the Who. One of my all-time favorite songs, and has an absolutely beautiful piano playing throughout the song.

    Thanks!

  • Good to know they're helpful! Yes, I've always liked that Who song, with the great piano intro.. Eb is my favorite key, too. Would be a challenge to teach on a video, though. But I'll keep it in mind!

  • Fan-freaking-tastic Pianojohn. I love the White Album, the second disk more so than the first but I mean, it's all good! This is amazing. I'm curious, do you do the Peanut's theme? I think it's called Linus and Lucy but I'm not sure. Anywho, keep up the amazing work!

  • Thanks very much! I agree with you on the White Album.. Disc 1 has more "popular" songs but Disc 2 is a little more creative and fun to play.

I used to play "Linus and Lucy" many years ago, or at least the first minute of it.. never bothered with the rest, unfortunately.. Maybe I should learn it now!

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. Your version is better than any sheet music I've come across. It feels wonderful to play this song. Keep up the amazing work.

  • Glad to do it for you, HZTBB.. Enjoy!

  • You're amazing PianoJohn, I've learned soooo much from your video's. I only tell the girls that I've never had a lesson, lol, I tell all my guy friends about your vids!

  • lol, thanks! You're doing it right, on both counts.. nice job!!

  • very good

  • Thanks!

  • John you're great ...

  • Thanks, pellegrino! :-)

  • Great job John, easy to play, and great tutorial, like all the rest of them! Amazing!

  • piano playing is so far beyond my comprehension and phisical ability...

    nice.

  • nah i wouldnt say that. its not like ppl are born playing piano its just like anything else all you hafta do is start playing and your body and mind get used to it and it starts to become natural. i never thought i wud be able to play this a year ago then i took piano lessons now this might be the easiest song i've learned how to play and it sounds amazing!!

  • This is the latest and the greatest of them all!!!

  • lol, thanks! :-)

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you, very much!

  • Great lessons, all of them! Thanks!

You must get invited to a lot of parties.

  • Something tells me that Martin had something to do with this.

  • this is my favorite song from the white album!

and this is a great video man! thanks!

  • Glad to do it for you!

  • the white album is my favorite beatles album. its the rawest of all i reckon.

  • Pianojohn these tutorials are great I can actually play these songs with your very user friendly tutorials...Thanks...If I could ask..do you know "Glad" by Traffic?? I'd love to learn a jazzy piano instrumental like that since I don't really "enhance" the Beatle songs by singing with them, if you know what I mean.....also maybe "Feeling Alright"

  • Thanks very much! I haven't played "Glad" before, but I do know "Feelin' Alright".. Both great songs. Thanks for the suggestion!

  • DIDNT RADIOHEAD RIPP OFF THE PIANO ?

  • There are definitely some similarities between Sexy Sadie and Karma Police. Interesting huh? Apparently the boys were listening to the White Album while recording O.K. Computer.

  • @Pianojohn, you are a godsend.

  • Glad it was helpful! :-)

  • Thanks! Hard song but fun to play!

  • I've never really played piano before, except the odd mess around as a kid.

But this intro only took me 10mins to learn and it all goes down to this video.

    Thanks!

  • i like your singing! haha. but your playing is amazing!!! :D

  • thanks for the great free pictorials. i just started playing and instead of reading music, i watch. instant gratification i guess. hey, whatever works..

  • Excellent! I've always loved this solo but could never figure it out. Thanks so much. Great playing and teaching method. Any chance you could do the Pulling Mussels from a shell solo by Squeeze? Keep up the good work. Cheers!

  • Jools Holland.

  • HEY GRAN TUTORIAL . GRACIAS ¡¡¡

  • Why is there only audio on the left side?

  • When you finish to play the second bridge, what do you play then? I would say the same thing ( Gb ...) that you play after the first bridge but i'm not sure.

  • I say you another time...=)!!!You play the piano very nice, and another time thank you for teaching!!! XD

ps This is one of my fouvorite song, becouse I like the miusic and the harmony !! =)

sorry if I write something wrong , (Italian)XD

  • me italian too. thanks so much for the tutorial :D

  • Thanks for answering

'Breaking up the notes' : does it mean you make an arpeggio of the chord ?

    PS: I am French

  • I've got a question about the bridge you play at the end( 9:57)

You play a Am7 chord twice but it seems that you play a ( or several )note between the 2 Am7. Which note is it?

And before going to the Gm7 you play a note. Which one is it?

And for the rest of the chords it seems you do the same thing. I hope I am understood Thanks

  • I'm actually just breaking up the notes of the Am7 chord. Same thing with the part before the Gm7 (unless you're talking about a different part of the video).

  • pianojohn, thank you very much for your help..

  • Sounds like Radiohead ripped off the Beatles...This is what you'll get...G to bG. Maybe the karma police should arrest THEM.

  • thom yorke wanted to make a song that sounded like it. same with happiness is a warm gun (paranoid android).

  • I realise every artist needs inspiration to fuel creativity but Yorke doesn't even try to create something new. Shame on Radiohead and every artist who hasn't the balls to use his own creativity.

  • ... you're an idiot

  • IMO, he succedeed. He made a song with a totally different feeling, that doesn't mean he doesn't have tha balls to use his own creativity. He didn't even use the exact same piano part.

  • The Beatles also 'ripped off' other artists if that's the term you want to use. Lady Madonna was a Fats Domino 'inspired' tune for example. If you really think that people don't use bits from other artists to make something new and original then you don't know much about music.

  • Wow. You truly do not comprehend much of what I said. Notice the Beatles didn't change the name of the tune? therefore it is a cover which clearly credits Fats Domino as the author. Radiohead took the hook of "Sexy Sadie" and gave it a new name, thus ripping off the Beatles. I don't mind a good cover as long as it is recognized as a cover.

  • You're getting confused. Paul McCartney wrote Lady Madonna, the song is credited to Lennon/MacCartney. It was inspired by Fats Domino who then went on to cover the song himself. Look it up on wikipedia.

  • First of all Wikipedia is unreliable, but I've confirmed through other means. Now let's recap: Paul McCartney wrote Lady Madonna in the STYLE of Fats Domino (he didn't take any chord progression from a specific song) and Fats Domino covered it. Back to the point: an artist can write a song in the style of anothers without plagarizing. Radiohead clearly plagarized: the most important chords of each song are identical.

  • If you really think the Beatles never 'borrowed' anything from anyone else you're welcome to delude yourself. For example, John heard Yoko playing Moonlight Sonata on piano, asked her to play the chords backwards, and ended up with the bones of "Because". Also Paul's bass line for "I Saw Her Standing There" was taken directly from the Chuck Berry song Im Talking About You. Paul said that he literally played exactly the same notes and it fit the song perfectly. These are just 2 examples.

  • And the riff to "I Feel Fine" is stolen from a Ray Charles song, "Come Together" sounds just like Chuck Berry riffs and melodies, "Blackbird" sounds exactly like this one bache guitar interlude, etc.

  • Fantastic

    Better than the original

  • ITS IN THE KEY OF G!!!!!!

  • What I like about these tutorials is the fact that you actually spell it out for us. It's especially useful for those of us who are musically illiterate(ME!). I can't read music to save my life. Before this , literally the only thing I could play on the piano was 'Frere Jaques'. You brought the piano out of the dark for me. Thanks, John.

  • Makes me sing. Thank you. :)

  • I've been looking for this FOR YEARS!!! The right "sing along" way to play!!! Thanks from another french beatles fan. Pianojohn rules!!!

  • pianojohn113 you are fantastic!!

  • Just fantastic the way you explain and go through it. Congrats John and keep it up if you will.

  • Man you are fantastic!!

Thank you very much for these tutorials!!!

I would be (been) grateful if you do a "Jealous Guy" video on the piano.

Sorry for the verbal mistakes, greetings from Argentina!

  • Great video mate. Beautiful Lennon composition, rolls perfectly into Helter Skelter.

  • Awesome. You hear the song as a kid of 10, fall in love with it, remember it from time to time over the years, then you see something like this, which just brings home the creative and imaginative genius of these incredible musicians. Then you think they were able to execute the performance of the song and make it look effortless. Dunbstruck is the word.

  • Thanks, great comment.. I think I first heard this song around age 10 as well. It was one of the first Beatles songs I learned, and never forgot it! They were incredible.

  • very inpresive sounds good mate and yes its a great song

  • I tell you.. it's magical when my piano sounds in the intro like the real song. i just learned dear prudence and started this one and had to write something.

  • Glad it was helpful!

  • Thank you!

  • Hey :) Thanks for this. Just wondering if you have or would do You Won't See Me sometime? It's got a really cool piano bit that I'm sure lots of people would love to learn :)

  • I should get around to that one eventually.. It's on the list, anyway!

  • awesome...

  • Thanks!

  • Thanks! You're right about Paul (although this is more of a Lennon song). I think he'd be flattered at your comparison! :-)

  • It's very similar to Karma Police.

  • hmm I see what you mean

  • Thank you for taking your time to share this. It is allowing me to finally play some songs I have always loved. Thanks!

  • Glad to do it for you.. Enjoy!

  • Very good. Thank you!

  • dude i'm hooked. great vid.thxs

  • Do cry baby cry next!!"

  • Awesome! I might try this song. Its so pretty, one of my faves by the Beatles. Thanks for the tutorial! Check out my videos!!

  • Oh, I also meant to ask, did you learn how to play this song on your own?

  • I did learn to play this on my own back in the '70s when I first bought the White Album, but have refined it over the years as I've listened more to it. This version is much closer to the original than the way I played it 30 years ago.

  • Amazing tutorial! Keep up the great work. Thnx!!

  • contratado!!!

  • This is awesome

  • Hey, thanks to you I was able to learn this great song! Thanks a lot! One question, I know you must be very busy, but have you ever thought about doing Cry Baby Cry?

  • Yes, in fact I may some day get to most of the Beatles library of tunes.. Just need to find more time!!

  • did paul play the piano for this?

  • I believe he did, but I'm not entirely sure.

  • Yes, and Lennon's got a Hammond organ in there too.

  • Nice, man, I've always wanted to learn how to play that one! :(

  • Glad it was helpful! :-)

  • I've been teaching myself how to play the piano for a little over 6 months ago. I listened to a friend play this and my goal is to play this song in a year. Please don't take this video down. Thanks again, Awesome!

  • Incredibly good, PianoJohn. I've spent years figuring out Beatles songs on the piano, but your talent tops the list. This is so good and so well matched to the actual record...great job and thanks very much!!!

  • my hero

  • :) I suck at piano

  • you are very very good at teaching a song to me as i have never had a lesson

i appreciate your contributions to the teaching of these beatle songs

    excellent job brother

  • Excellent! Yeah it took me a few times too but you have a cool way of explaining it.. SOO many thanks for taking the time to do this my friend. Kudos to you from the UK ;)

  • it took me a few times to figure out why you gave a little "heh-heh" when you said "use these three fingers" but then i finally realized and gave myself a little "heh-heh" as well and now i cant play this song with out thinking about it. "shocking!" isnt it? hahaha

  • I always hated this song but this tutorial made me appreciate the intro, and now I can't stop playing the song on my ipod. The beatles were so great at intros like this. My favorite is the intro to "I've just seen a face" Do you think it possible to play that on the piano? I'm trying but I cant say that I'm on my way at all

  • Yes, the intro to that song can work on the piano, although I've found that it doesn't sound quite as good as it does on a guitar, for whatever reason. Some songs seem to sound better on guitar than piano (Blackbird is one of them), but I think that intro could work.
