Awsome job guys, Very informitve. I re-learn alot about "Flappers". I remember my 12th grade yr i dressed in a Flapper costume (my mother made) and none of my peers knew what I was. They kept guess wrong. The Teachers knew but they didn`t count (lol).
In my culture' education system in Japan, we discourage encouragement or rewards but instead we punish the under acheivers. It is not in my nature to say that this is a well documented fashion design in the early 20th centry. One thing that bothered me, the use of adjective such as skimpy and such is a relative term. It seemed confusing when using that word and associating with the picture shown because when we compare, skimpy is something more revealing in 21st centry.
@tkoizumi "We punish underachievers in Japan...It is not my nature... early 20th century". I agree with some aspects of what you have to say. But with all due respect, you could have just clicked another video instead of speaking about how your culture "administers" punishment to the "underachievers". I don't think ones culture has to do with how one sees "underachieving", that is entirely up to the individual. So why bring "culture" and nationalism into it?
I do not exactly know the age of the producers, but based upon their young voice; they have also made a great job for their age!
Kids like this should also get encouragements but also guidance; if not it would be like like cutting of a strong sprout just when it reaches out of the ground and streche itself for the nutrition from the sun and the world around it.
These are such a fascinating compilation of images and very well put together. As someone who does a lot of image research as part of my profession, I can appreciate the amount of time and effort you put into this. Well done!
@RealCandyRayne no some women did, women int he entertainment industry besides from acting and dancing and the erotic entertainments some did.. like side shows "world's strongest woman" theres photos and stuff of it just wasnt common or acceptable
Homework projects have changed - nicer documentary - junior executive producer/director/writer/etc. Liberating feminist but note that the hairstyle continued to cover the ears typically. Hairstyles that regularly uncovered the ears would be a few more decades to come - To revealing - sweet nothings whispered in the ear may lead elsewhere. At least during the time that Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote, the ears were not uncovered in mixed company - per her mother.
Good job... just remember that eras become stereotyped in the national mind; everyone was a flapper in the 20's, everyone was a beatnik in the 50's, and a war protester or hippy in the 60's, etc. The great majority of people who lived in those times not only didn't fit the mold, but never knew anyone who did. I grew up in the 50's & 60's, and never saw a beatnik, hippie or anti-war protest... except on TV and the movies. Today, that's still the only place i see them... and on Youtube.
Initially I thought this was not bad; however, on reading the comments someone states this was worked on for six months by High School students?!?!? That's terrifying lol. If that's incorrect though and these kids are as young as they sound (9 or 10)... then it's not a bad job.
this was awesome!!! really interesting. learned some new facts i didnt know which were helpful to me as an artist for recreating these looks!! great job!!! xo
Can I suggest that both men and women's 1920's fashion were largely the result of the introduction of the motor car (tighter/shorter clothing) and film (cosmetics).
@TheGranule The problem with your comments is simply this: they're damn chores to read. It's as if you are making an effort to sound intelligent. Who are you to judge their work so harshly? Actually, don't answer that, because I don't care. It shouldn't matter. Your seemingly "constructive criticism" is more patronizing and bitter than helpful.
I would like to thank all those who responded to me specifically. It is easy to tell those who have standards from those who have the discernment of a teen.
BTW having the discernment of a teen is NOT a compliment.
When somebody resorts to name calling and sub-standard language they reveal themselves to be sub-standard.
I will consider the source of each post and revel in the fact that there are some who continue to expect the best of our society.
It is irresponsible if you posted images that are not what you claim they are.
If you claim the images in this video are of Flappers of the 1920s and they are not. That is irresponsible.
I am very glad that you have great grades, you are capable of doing great work. If you make a mistake and post something in error just be aware of it.
Say "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know that was of the wrong era."
That is being responsible. We all make mistakes. We all learn and succeed.
@TheGranule how is this irresponsible? it was a required project that every student had to do and the teacher said for them too see it you can put it in youtube, so i did. also i am not irresponsible by any means nor do i believe I have the rights of an adult. I have a 97 overall average in school, win many academic award and community service awards, and also participate in numerous extra curricular activities.
@TheGranule I'm not done :) I find it sad how you go around criticizing 2 teens on their project they devoted 6 months too and worked very hard on. Where does this whole thing of the future America come in? You do not know enough about me to make a judgement like that. I am not challenged in any way, I am actually in advanced classes and iI did this project with my sister and she picked the topic and I agreed. This shows that I'm responsible because I do my work and what I am told to do. OK?
@321funnyjunk The fact that you are in highschool (not children) and spent 6 MONTHS on the project makes me so embarassed to be a teen. This is pretty much the worst project I've ever seen.
@TheGranule Granule, I agree with you 100%. Today's educators are doing them no favours by not correcting them but coddling their "projects" as "excellent" thus awarding them A's and B's when they would better be served getting an "F." So...they have to learn hard lessons much later on in life at a stage when they have expectations and egos which when bruised, may unravel their psychosis. I hurt for people who were brought up this way. No wonder some of them shoot to kill at high schools....
I think that with proper guidance 321funnyjunk will succeed and excel. She has the capability.
Most teens are testing boundaries, but if there are no boundaries to test, they fail to become the citizens they need to be.
It is the responsibility of adults to speak out and remind them of what is proper. The teacher may have been overwhelmed with work and not noticed the errors.
Many posters here have a strange outlook, in that they complain about standards. Sad
@TheGranule Besides all this, the documentary we are commenting on does not accurately portray the 1920's as they happened, and focusses on very petty aspects of the era. No mention of Calvin Coolidge, or the milestone Henry Ford achieved building 20 million cars, or the establishment of broadcast infrastructure through ABC, CBS, or NBC. Or how America became a world power through its culture, technology and economy. These should've been taught to them in class-it's sad what they don't learn.
@chev6art Because obviously a video entitled Flappers: Rebels of the 1920s would talk about Henry Ford making cars. Were you in the class? No I don't think so. Maybe they were taught about it, maybe they just decided to do a project on this one aspect. In history I learnt about how the treaty of versaille led to a nazi germany, but I did a project on Jack the Ripper because I'm interested in crime. Doesn't mean I don't care or know about Germany does it.
@chev6art You're comment focauses on petty opinions and comments. I'm english, so I don't know how old you are in 8th grade, but if its roughly equal to what it is here (about 13/14) or even if its a bit higher, they've done an excellent job. If you know so much about these things, go watch a video about that instead of going on a video where the subject is obviously one you don't care for and trying to insult two hardworking and intelligent teens.
@xXAlythXx A little education from the teacher would've improved the accuracy of "Rebels." It gets an A for effort in the class--an F when attempting to portray the 1920's to the rest of us. It is merely a symptom of what is wrong with American public education: Projects of questionable quality, though the expectations for reward remain high. The disappointment outside of the classroom can turn them into pissed off adults. Some succeed anyway, others end up in jail.
@chev6art weve learnned all of that it was just that we were given the topic of flappers and nothing more. There was a central theme , which I have forgotten because this project was assigned over a year ago, but we had to follow it. Honestly I find the whole 20s era magnificent and wish that I could have done the whole era, but we were assigned on piece of the era, flappers. Also, where does jail come into this? It was only for school!!!
@chev6art I consider them to be rebels, going against the norm is what rebellion is. At least thats what my A level crime and deviance module taught me in sociology. Its not attempting to portray the whole of the 1920s, just the flappers, how many times do I need to point the title out to you? And they are not going to end up in jail, what a stupid assumption. They have chosen a public forum to present their report, eventually getting viewed by millions, some will chide them worse than you and I are capable of doing!
@chaimyamin we had 6 months to know about the project but most of it was planning and such because there was an essay that went along with this, which we got an 100 on. the research period was about 1.5 months and time to make this whole video was 1 week so not exactly 6 months and sorry you dont like the info in the video
@TheGranule Stop pretending you care for their wellbeing, when you've come on here to show off what an insufferable know it all you are. I highly doubt a few wrongly shown images will cost them the ability to be good citizens. If they were writing a book to be published, or a tv documentary, yes I would expect higher standards, but they were not. Its a documentary for a high school project. Get over it. First, you have no ethics. If you had ethics you wouldn't worry about if I could see something in black and white and not color. You would worry about accuracy and truth.
Second, you have no moral compass to try to avoid responsibility by saying that you are no historian, especially when your thesis is on the history of Flappers in the 1920s.
Third, I pity any employer you trusts you to produce anything of value based on what should be your own work. Shame on you.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
If you want a substandard intellectually, morally and ethically challenged America keep on telling these teens how great they are.
If you want an America that has great leaders, educated, and moral voters then demand those standards.
Teens like to think they deserve all the rights of an adult with none of the work and standards that accrue to that stage of life.
If you want responsibility you have to have been responsible. This shows how irresponsible they are, and craven.

They are wearing shoes with heels and dresses with materials not known from the 1920s.
Poor research.
