While you're right it's an accidental to this key signature, I disagree with you that it doesn't work. It wasn't like a tritone or anything horrific sounding. It added flavor to a "bland" (in the sense of a non changing) chord structure. This makes going back to the simplistic chord structure more enjoyable for us for a nice ending.
