Even though it's obvious that the planet is Earth, they had to say "planet" in the ad to avoid controversy - probably the first situation of video game violence.
Don't be so proud of this technological terror you have constructed, George Plimpton. The destruction of a planet is nothing in comparison to the Power of the Force!
$2.99 for a grainy 30 second spot? I can get way better quality videos from PSN... well, I could anyway. There's enough downloaders people don't need to pay for Youtube material.
@ashenclone Most Intellevision games played better on the Atari 2600. While the games weren't as visually striking, they generally played faster. And you didn't have to deal with that piece of shit Intellivision controller.
@ninelivecat The Intellivision, which could produce superior graphics, paid for that advantage with a slower processor. It wasn't able to produce to the fast, frenetic shooting that Atari could provide. All you have to do is try and play the Intellivision's lame Space Invaders clone to see that. The only really good shooter Intellivision produced was Astrosmash.
I know which one I would have bought at the time! that's a cool looking game! but how many people in the street would name check it now! asteroids is a classic that stood the test of time!
"Starstrike features our most exciting visual effect: the total destruction of a planet."
LOL, even back then they were overly obsessed with "visual effects"... It's about gameplay, folks! Look at Tetris, one of the most popular games, but it only needs the most rudimentary graphics.
I played both these games back in the day and I thought Star Strike sucked and Asteroids is still fun to play to this day thus it stood the tests of time well. (Throws egg on George Plimpton's face! :p)
Star Strike was in 3-D, that's for sure. However, I would have not compared it to Astroids.
In Astroids, you are a ship in defense against astroids. In Star Strike, you are trying to save planet earth, These 2 games are alike in that they're "space games," but nothing more.
In Astroids, the game only gets harder, even when you're struggling. In Astrosmash, however, the game gets easier when you're struggling. This makes the gameplay much more enjoyable.
Only games for losers get easier when you aren't doing well. The point of a game is you have to improve in order to win, not have the game get easier so anyone can win.
yeah a comparison would have been Zaxxon for the Atari 2600, however that game was not BY Atari... (also I don't know if Star Strike came out before Zaxxon)
I must say that Intellevision should have continued to replace Nintendo such as the 8 bit Intellevision Entertainment System; 16 bit Super Intellevision; 64 bit Intellevision 64; Intellevsion Game Cube and Intellevision Wii. That's what Intellevision should do instead of Nintendo. I'm very unhappy that Intellevison was discontinued.
Intellivision had a small market share. I had one friend who had an Intellivision. Me and the rest of my friends had Atari. In fact one of my friend's dad was VP for Atari.
Intellivision had a lot of good games, but a lousy controller, that disk thing that was the basis for the Nintendo and SEGA controllers.
The animation in the Intel games wasn't the best. People liked smooth quick action. Intellevision didn't have that, so tried to "dis" Atari with superior graphics.
I've played both games, and there's one comparison that George forgot to give: Atari's Asteriods was actually *FUN* to play. Star Strike was a B-O-R-E.
Very true. Intellivsion games were hard to get into. I liked the horse racing one, and Sea Battle. But their aerial combat game was poor, and their racing game was just too hard to control.
Good football game though. Okay baseball game.
I remember this commercial too. Always wanted to play Star Strike, but my friend who had an intellevision, never got the game.
The Auto Racing game was impressive. I liked the way you could drive off the track and find that hidden dragstrip and pit row. Very advanced graphics and gameplay. But I preferred the Atari racing control to Intellivision's. A little easier to control. That's just me.
Yeah that's what blew me away--at the time the ability to drive and explore a 'vast' landscape just amazed me. I loved driving around finding stuff. That game was truly ahead of its time.
It is too bad, Mattel did not have the licensing power that Atari had. The graphics and games on the INTV were more in depth. Even the Atari made Centipede cart was a step up.
Oh, yeah? Well...let's hope HE never decides to run for President...if he does, and wins, let's hope his missus Patricia reins him in before he goes INSANE, and unleashes NUCLEAR ARMAGEDDON! :-O
Who needs the Death-star now!?
