what as happened to this guy?. a great talent one of england main men a great threat, a goal machine!.he was a definate start for england 3/4 years ago. now he is forgotten. such a shame. when he joined united i hoped he would bang them in and be prolific but it did not happen. people raved about how hed be the greatest goalscorer of all time for england how he was so young and it was inevitable. what happened?
@MrSweatyPants He made the worst move of his career and went to Real Madrid. English players thinking they can make it big in Spain always end up peaking too soon. He ended up fighting for a place at Madrid and lost his flair. Then ended up at Newcastle and although I had hope for him too when he joined United he only has the ability to score easy goals every once in a while. Such a shame.
Michael Owen is a Money Grabbing Benchwarming Disloyal Gloryhunting Cunt Who should retire but he wouldn't because he likes picking up pay checks and medals even if he doesn't play.
@19Wylds95 He isn't average he just can't stay fit, he still has the skill I really wish he would get a season of good football without injuries, he deserves it.
No matter what he does from now on, if he gets injured every week, never scores another goal and gets done for interfering with his horses, he'll ALWAYS have this!
@misfitsg17 His speed, his age,the context, the pressure, the rivalry between the two countries, the little flick on he took to take control, the strength for such a small and young player against much tougher more physical defenders, the perfectly timed run,the control, the placing of the shot into the top corner, the feint and then acceleration just before he enters the box....and much more is why this is one of the best goals ever.
Micheal Owen a true English football star and a man who deserved to where the kit of the 3 Lions. He was so young at 18 at the greatest tourament in the world and against an elite team like Argentina and he does that. Wow its sucks he could only play healthy in two world cups 98, 02 the way he went out in 2006 WC was painful to watch.
@Theargoytimecompany Cos running like a chetah taking the ball running round 2 argentina players with ease and keeping control of the ball at that speed then putting the ball in the top corner is average. When i first saw this thought it was on fast forward so quick.
If you add that with hes 18 1st world cup carrying the weight of the country on his shoulder better job than rooney did
I don't know about that. Sunday Oliseh of Nigeria had that canon to beat Zubizarreta (Spain) in their opening match. That goal is priceless and arguably one of the best goals of the tournament. But Bergkamp's goal was a thing of beauty.
omg what this guy is talking about you never can compare c. ronaldo with messi. ronaldo is only a overrated cute guy he is just advertisement to sell shirts. messi i a complete player and was born to play the game not to sell stuff like ronaldo do
Just like a messi goal, speed and pace = deadly, but when he lost that pace it all went downhill, just like when messi gets his first serious injury and will be nothing without his speed, ronaldo will still be banging them in from 40 yards if he loses his speed, messi will be finished, he's already seriously over rated.
Messi will have a great career and will come up clutch when it counts. Cristiano Ronaldo's accomplishments will consist mostly of racking up goals against mediocre teams.
@jtvols13 Ronaldo scoring mostly against mediocre teams?? Are you a retard? Apparently you missed the CL Final when he scored against Chelsea and the Quarter-Finals where he tore Arsenal apart last year......could go on and on and on but you're obviously not getting it. I hate Ronaldo, hate Man U and hate Real Madrid but the boy is the best right now and probably ever.
It was an awesome goal. Yet, by no means it is only second to Maradonas goal in World Cup history. It wasn't even the best goal of the tournament (Bergkamp was far better). I wonder how many votes were cast in England in that contest.
Going to Real Madrid destroyed his career. Why leave a club where he was already the legendary #10 and with a culture like the anfield? Talk about being spoiled.
@ZZM10 A really good question ZZM. I think it was more down to the fact that he didn't get on with manager Gerard Houlier. Houlier coninually benched him and talked to the press about Owen being 'injury prone' Houlier did the same thing later to marksman Robbie Fowler as well.
Owen just didn't see a future at the club with Houlier as the manager.
I guess thats the logical explanation, Houlier was never one to mess with. Still If he REALLY wanted to stay at Anfield he could have...players are powerful if they want to they can get rid of a manager on their own. Look at Scolari at chelsea...ticking off ballack drogba and anelka signaled the end of his chelsea tems. Really Owen could have waited and deposed of Houlier but I guess an offer to Real Madrid was to much to refuse.
Good points ZZM. I recently read Robbie Fowler's autobiography in which he states that Houlier was very clever when he decided that a player didn't fit in with his philosophy. Knowing full well that the player may be popular with supporters he would launch a subtle smear campaign against him. This would take the shape of making slight disparaging remarks in the press as to the players abilities, commitment or suitability for the squad. Slowly erroding the players standing at the club.
At my boyhood club Lyon we had Houlier a few years ago and he did exactly that. By those same disparaging remarks he got rid of Fred, Milan Baros,Piquionne, Muller, and Sylvain Wiltord, all decent players before the board realised that the longer this guy stayed, the sooner nobody would be left at the squad lol.
Could you give me the title of Fowlers biography? Sounds like a good read.
@zlajacrnjak20 Michael Owen was one of the quickest strikers ever seen in the premier league. His speed and the ability to go spin off defenders was one of the key factors in his goal scoring success. A true legend.
I remember reading in the newspaper how the Argentina defenders said they were scared of Owen because he was so quick. Seriously. They actually said that in that game they felt he was un-defendable. That game really had the Argentina team freaked out. They couldn't see anyone as good as Owen on their team. I tell you what though ... Ortega was awesome in this game. What a quality midfielder.
he is tiny and makes the two argentine defenders look like ladyboys. it was just like the paras launching the final attack on port stanley, england were down to 10 men but the 11 argentinians gave up like the lady boys they are
Imagine the scenario there are 10 minutes to go in the World Cup final and England are 1-0 down.
Fabio Capello can choose between Michael Owen and Darren Bent to come off the bench and rescue Englands World Cup dream. Who will he turn to?
A man with 40 England goals to his name and bags of international experience who has played for three of Europes biggest clubs? Or a striker with four caps, no international goals and a reputation for blowing hot and cold?
@limyuhui Bent has scored more goals in the premiership this year than Owen has scored in the past four. I want someone with pace coming on when we need a goal, not someone that used to have pace.
he is too injured now!? You are either bad at english or unaware that despite a minor setback injury at the mo. He will be knocking at the door. And he gets the full backing of his team-mates and manager. idiot
......O.o im bad at english and you say "mo"..............and "knocking at the door" what the hell is that?
I was just saying that Michael Owen suffered a bad injury in the past and its somethign he still has issues with, im not saying he should stop playing.......I just dont think we'll see anything greater than what we have already from him.
Capello is right to. If owen can get fit and prove he's worthy it would be a great thing, he is a talented goal scorer. But you have to earn your place, no one is there because of the name. Finally we have a manager who see's that. I hope owen can back to his best, he was a great striker, he was a natural goal scorer, and would be a perfect partner for rooney.
so i guess those 40 goals he has scored for england were jsut nothing and hes only 9 off charlton yeah tht sounds like a really bad player tht, man it is almost disgracefull really, 40 gaols wow, tht is terrible
What about Newcastle? He sat on the bench through nearly all of his 120000 a week contract most of the times not even turning up to watch his own team while the fans are paying rip off ticket prices just to pay his wages
I agree with that. But that said a lot of lesser players have screwed with the club too and not played from the heart. At least with Michael he does what Newcastle had paid him for when he's been able to play...and that's to score goals.
He's a sicknote of the highest dye! Im from the north east and work a lot in Newcastle. Most geordies i speak to can't fucking stand Owen for being such a greedy lazy motherfukka!
Hehe, you're not too far done the road from me fella (Guisborough). I'm not a Newcastle fan, but I am a fan of the player. Definately Newcastle should've got more out of him and they probably would've had he stayed fit. But I guess that's the price you pay for someone as internationally well known as he is. But a lot of players at Newcastle are over-valued in terms of wages...just look at Duff, Nolan, Martins (yeh I know he's gone but back then), Butt, Coloccini...
Real great players don't need help from coaches and other players. Great players like Maradonna, Pele, Zidanne, Figo, Beckham, Gazza etc made it purely with natural ability. You can't learn what real great players like those have, you either have it or you don't. Just my opinion! Every player has 1 good goal in them Owens goal here was fantastic!
Yeah that is true but Owen isn't necesarrily a great player but a great goal scorer. Lineker was a great goal scorer, he knew where to be like Owen does but if a great goal scorer doesn't have the support he won't get the ball.
Trust me, if you'd have put any of those players in that NUFC team that Owen was in they'd have damaged their reputations because that NUFC team was terrible.
but thats england for you, a country which glorifies any sporting moment seeing as they never win anything. I will no longer be able to stand it if they mention 1966 in 2010 world cup.. please that was decadess ago!..no qualification for euro 2008, england constantly losin in the cricket, british hopes dashed with murray, no success in rugby.. 4-0 thrashin to germany in under 21 final.. appears england fail in every sport the country loves,, its a real shamee!
haha ur comment sez it all, we may compete well but when it comes down to the crunch.. the pressure, holding the nerve.. producing at the big moments we fail miserably..and loll rowing.. who gives a shit about rowing.. again thats england glorifying a sport which has very few followers.. even in bloody snooker john higgins and the scottish players are taking over the scene. dont mention rowing.. i think the entire country would rather see us win a world cup, wimbledon, and cricket ova rowingg!
For all of you who dont see what is special about this goal I'll explain.. first all of his control from the beckham pass is simply exquisite.. then to skin two world class defenders.. inject his pace and perfectly find the top corner with a beautiful accurate shot.. almost like a lob shot into the top corner with no power makes it such a worthy goal.. and the fact that he was only 18 years old.. but yeah england glorified the goal for ages even though argentina went on to win anyway
Makes me laugh, if liverpool had resigned owen everyone would've been laughing at the fact we'd signed a crock. Now all of a sudden because utd have signed him its an astute piece of business. What a load of bollox.
Why coz Utd have signed him. Like I said if liverpool had took him back the mancs would've been laughin their heads off. Still, now he's signed for them I suppose they have got to put a brave face on and try and take some positives from the signing.
no they wudnt, michael owen on a free transfer at 30K a week is a good deal for any club. he scored 10 goals for newcastle last season. if he repeated that for liverpool or united hd be worth the transfer, and since pool and united are a lot better he'l surely score more and hopefully improve.
Him stayin fit is a big IF though mate and I doubt he'll improve at the age of 29. Also did you know that even in his pomp at liverpool, Michael owen never hit the 20 goal mark in the league?
united didnt buy him for the purpose of supplying bucket loads of goals. but an experienced quality player like owen, for free, at only 30K a week. if he only scored 14 or 15 goals this season its a good deal.
not a big IF since he scored 10 goals for newcastle last season when they got relegated. i dont think u can accuse him of betraying pool by goin to united, they sold him to madrid who sold him to newcastle. when his contract expired liverpool didnt want him, everyone thought he was no good anymore, except for united. and why wudnt he join united if they want to sign him? im sure if pool wanted him they'd have been his first choice.
Owen has developed into a poacher now, and yes IF he stays healthy he'll be a very good compliment to a roaming Rooney. He's not expected to hit the 20 goal mark, but if he gets 15 at crucial times in crucial matches, he will more than fulfilled his role.
if you cant see what is special about this goal you are truly a blind twat! owen was 18 years of age when hes scored that, about half the size of the defender in contest and still managed to fire the ball into the top corner, while slightly off balance, you fail to see what so special about it? you need your head tested mate!!
ok now first of all don't call me blind. second of all size doesn't matter (messi, iniesta, xavi) and third i still don't see whats so special about it. so all ur saying this goal was special because he was maybe off balanced and still shot it to the top corner. however i do give credit for the top corner thing though
what is the song plays at first can someone PLZZZZ answer ASAP.....

he is too injured now!? You are either bad at english or unaware that despite a minor setback injury at the mo. He will be knocking at the door. And he gets the full backing of his team-mates and manager. idiot
mulchy13 2 years ago
......O.o im bad at english and you say "mo"..............and "knocking at the door" what the hell is that?
I was just saying that Michael Owen suffered a bad injury in the past and its somethign he still has issues with, im not saying he should stop playing.......I just dont think we'll see anything greater than what we have already from him.
ShinEiyuu 2 years ago
your argument is in my opinion... flawed. He is fit.....and is scoring goals.....in one of the best teams in the world.
mulchy13 2 years ago
Capello is right to. If owen can get fit and prove he's worthy it would be a great thing, he is a talented goal scorer. But you have to earn your place, no one is there because of the name. Finally we have a manager who see's that. I hope owen can back to his best, he was a great striker, he was a natural goal scorer, and would be a perfect partner for rooney.
sg1985bwfc 2 years ago 2
When I would play, I was a striker and Michael Owen was one of my favorite strikers to emulate.

Owen was finish once he left Liverpool.

He scored many great goals and the keepers had no chance. In fact he scored more great goals than almost anybody.

Every player has 1 good goal in him. Owen sucks!
P1mpMyBr1de 2 years ago
so i guess those 40 goals he has scored for england were jsut nothing and hes only 9 off charlton yeah tht sounds like a really bad player tht, man it is almost disgracefull really, 40 gaols wow, tht is terrible
bedavere 2 years ago
30 of those goals were against shite! Well if his heart had been in the game during his career he would have broken Charltons record yrs ago!
P1mpMyBr1de 2 years ago
Owen's been England's most prolific striker since Shearer hung up his boots. To suggest he hasn't put his heart into his career is laughable.
Everywhere he's gone he's scored goals. Even for Real Madrid and he was on the bench for most of his stint there.
mfcastillo1980 2 years ago
What about Newcastle? He sat on the bench through nearly all of his 120000 a week contract most of the times not even turning up to watch his own team while the fans are paying rip off ticket prices just to pay his wages
P1mpMyBr1de 2 years ago
His stats show him socring 1 goal in 3 games. Which other Newcastle striker has done that since Shearer left?
mfcastillo1980 2 years ago 4
Yea but he only played about 1 in 30
P1mpMyBr1de 2 years ago
I agree with that. But that said a lot of lesser players have screwed with the club too and not played from the heart. At least with Michael he does what Newcastle had paid him for when he's been able to play...and that's to score goals.
mfcastillo1980 2 years ago
He's a sicknote of the highest dye! Im from the north east and work a lot in Newcastle. Most geordies i speak to can't fucking stand Owen for being such a greedy lazy motherfukka!
P1mpMyBr1de 2 years ago
Hehe, you're not too far done the road from me fella (Guisborough). I'm not a Newcastle fan, but I am a fan of the player. Definately Newcastle should've got more out of him and they probably would've had he stayed fit. But I guess that's the price you pay for someone as internationally well known as he is. But a lot of players at Newcastle are over-valued in terms of wages...just look at Duff, Nolan, Martins (yeh I know he's gone but back then), Butt, Coloccini...
mfcastillo1980 2 years ago
He was always going to struggle because he didn't have the quality around him and the coaches were inept!
kingdaniel69 2 years ago 2
Real great players don't need help from coaches and other players. Great players like Maradonna, Pele, Zidanne, Figo, Beckham, Gazza etc made it purely with natural ability. You can't learn what real great players like those have, you either have it or you don't. Just my opinion! Every player has 1 good goal in them Owens goal here was fantastic!
P1mpMyBr1de 2 years ago
Yeah that is true but Owen isn't necesarrily a great player but a great goal scorer. Lineker was a great goal scorer, he knew where to be like Owen does but if a great goal scorer doesn't have the support he won't get the ball.
Trust me, if you'd have put any of those players in that NUFC team that Owen was in they'd have damaged their reputations because that NUFC team was terrible.
You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear.

but thats england for you, a country which glorifies any sporting moment seeing as they never win anything. I will no longer be able to stand it if they mention 1966 in 2010 world cup.. please that was decadess ago!..no qualification for euro 2008, england constantly losin in the cricket, british hopes dashed with murray, no success in rugby.. 4-0 thrashin to germany in under 21 final.. appears england fail in every sport the country loves,, its a real shamee!
speedgun00 2 years ago
we fail to win, but sport is also about competition, and we compete well.
try, try and try again eventually we will succeed! And you forgot rowing, we OWN at rowing.
tomhammonds760 2 years ago
haha ur comment sez it all, we may compete well but when it comes down to the crunch.. the pressure, holding the nerve.. producing at the big moments we fail miserably..and loll rowing.. who gives a shit about rowing.. again thats england glorifying a sport which has very few followers.. even in bloody snooker john higgins and the scottish players are taking over the scene. dont mention rowing.. i think the entire country would rather see us win a world cup, wimbledon, and cricket ova rowingg!
speedgun00 2 years ago
we have lewis hamilton,,,jenson button looks like he will be world champion this year too
jdodefoe 2 years ago
For all of you who dont see what is special about this goal I'll explain.. first all of his control from the beckham pass is simply exquisite.. then to skin two world class defenders.. inject his pace and perfectly find the top corner with a beautiful accurate shot.. almost like a lob shot into the top corner with no power makes it such a worthy goal.. and the fact that he was only 18 years old.. but yeah england glorified the goal for ages even though argentina went on to win anyway

england got cheated we shud of won

Makes me laugh, if liverpool had resigned owen everyone would've been laughing at the fact we'd signed a crock. Now all of a sudden because utd have signed him its an astute piece of business. What a load of bollox.
JamsyLFC 2 years ago
possibly the transfer of the summer the michael owen one.
mustainerulesxx 2 years ago
Why coz Utd have signed him. Like I said if liverpool had took him back the mancs would've been laughin their heads off. Still, now he's signed for them I suppose they have got to put a brave face on and try and take some positives from the signing.
JamsyLFC 2 years ago
no they wudnt, michael owen on a free transfer at 30K a week is a good deal for any club. he scored 10 goals for newcastle last season. if he repeated that for liverpool or united hd be worth the transfer, and since pool and united are a lot better he'l surely score more and hopefully improve.
mustainerulesxx 2 years ago
Him stayin fit is a big IF though mate and I doubt he'll improve at the age of 29. Also did you know that even in his pomp at liverpool, Michael owen never hit the 20 goal mark in the league?
JamsyLFC 2 years ago
united didnt buy him for the purpose of supplying bucket loads of goals. but an experienced quality player like owen, for free, at only 30K a week. if he only scored 14 or 15 goals this season its a good deal.
mustainerulesxx 2 years ago 2
Again, thats a big IF isn't it. Oh well I guess we will just have to wait and see.
One thing is for certain is he has burnt his bridges with me the judas cunt. Not that he'll be bothered like.
JamsyLFC 2 years ago
not a big IF since he scored 10 goals for newcastle last season when they got relegated. i dont think u can accuse him of betraying pool by goin to united, they sold him to madrid who sold him to newcastle. when his contract expired liverpool didnt want him, everyone thought he was no good anymore, except for united. and why wudnt he join united if they want to sign him? im sure if pool wanted him they'd have been his first choice.
mustainerulesxx 2 years ago
Owen has developed into a poacher now, and yes IF he stays healthy he'll be a very good compliment to a roaming Rooney. He's not expected to hit the 20 goal mark, but if he gets 15 at crucial times in crucial matches, he will more than fulfilled his role.
eroshi 2 years ago
He has averaged a goal every other game throughout his career, including other countries and at international level.

Nice effort, good goal but wouldn't title it as "the best goal in WC 98"
MrOhh1 2 years ago
can someone explain why this goal is called a wonder goal? I know football for 10 years now but I don't see what's so special about it
soul24rage 2 years ago
if you cant see what is special about this goal you are truly a blind twat! owen was 18 years of age when hes scored that, about half the size of the defender in contest and still managed to fire the ball into the top corner, while slightly off balance, you fail to see what so special about it? you need your head tested mate!!
scumycunt 2 years ago
ok now first of all don't call me blind. second of all size doesn't matter (messi, iniesta, xavi) and third i still don't see whats so special about it. so all ur saying this goal was special because he was maybe off balanced and still shot it to the top corner. however i do give credit for the top corner thing though
