Maybe you'll be surprised, but when he spoke Schipa retained the typical accent of his city, Lecce, but when he sang his diction was perfect, it was Italian or Spanish.
Si las comparaciones siempre son odiosas, las que muchos intentan establecer entre estos dos genios inigualables que fueron Tito Schipa y Carlos Gardel, lo son todavía mas.
Also, I listened one time to Luciano Pavarotti singing Caminito...fantastic, give me a break mate, your image is so limited. Gardel was very good, no doubt, but his voice couldn't take him too far, he couldn't bring so much fire which a great tenor can bring in a tango.
It´s not a question of limited vision. Gardel he is one of the founders of the tango style. Schipa he does a great job here but it´s still an opera singer singing tango.
For sure his voice was better developed than Gardel but Gardel He Is Tango.
He is, beyond any discussion, the meter after which everytango singer is mesured.
Fact that people don;t remember Schipa is other matter! He was a tenor, he didn't sing tango for a living, plus take into account the lack of muscial education of many nowadays. When it comes to La Cumparsita, Schipa is best!
I listened to Gardel for many years. He cannot compare to Schipa! Equal to Gardel were Julio Sosa and Jorge(Alfonso) Duran. Am sorry but you don't know what you're talking about!
I have heard both Schipa's and Gardel's renditions many times. For my taste, absolutely no one sings this Argentine classic better than the wonderful Schipa. He sings it with such passion and flair. And his phrasing and Spanish diction is flawless.Bravissimo Schipa e grazie mille maestro !
I couldn't agree more. Schipa's La Cumparsita is a jewel which I listen to almost every day. When it comes to this song a great artist like Tito Schipa is better than any entertainer, no matter how great this one is.
Hermosa versión. Es de destacar que esta vez se respetó la letra original del compositor uruguayo Matos Rodriguez, que reflejaba sentimientos de la propia vida del autor. Gracias Jurek46pin.
Muchas gracias vincitor for the lyrics to this great piece. When you read the lyrics as the great Schipa sings them, you see what superb diction and phrasing Schipa possessed. His superb command of Spanish surely helped his enormous popularity in the 20's and 30's at Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires. He was, without doubt, one of the finest Italian lyric tenors of all time.Bravissimo Schipa.Bellissima voce!
Yes, he sounds more like a South American than a Spaniard here, with a slight Italian tone of course, but in actual songs from Spain like "Princesita" and "Amapola", he used what sounded like an authentic Castellano accent. "Prin-the-si-ta"...
Tang songs are mostly Argentine anyway.
Of all Italian operatic singers, Schipa was by far the best in singing Spanish and Latin American repertoire. And of course, in Italian, he was divine.
E meraviglioso! This piece is so good I find myself listening to it weekly on youtube. The superbly unique Schipa sings it perfectly.Tito certainly had a great feeling for Latin music.Great diction and phrasing.Grazie mille for this.Bravissimo Schipa!Che bella voce.
con china zorrilla tuvo un hijo,el cual fue figura de danubio en los 70.tito schipa jamas reconocio a su hijo,lo que derivo en un pedido de la cancilleria por un adn.
Tito, the great tenore di grazia. If there was just one sinlge tenor in this world today with his taste and style then prices for opera tickets would be worth the outlay.
What did you mean by saying that he loved Spanish and "Creole" accents in music? Schipa loved singing lots of Spanish-language songs, but "Creole" refers to what? French influenced America? Spanish natives in Latin America?
Among Italian tenors, Schipa had by far the best feel and enunciation with good accent for Spanish music.
Thank you! In Argentina, "criollo" of course refers to something native, before the massive immigration of Europeans starting the late 19th century. Being a gaucho is certainly criollo!
Thanks for putting this up! If you have more Schipa singing tangos or other popular Latin classics, we all would really appreciate it. :)
Maravilloso, me pregunto si alguien cantó mejor este tango que esta maravillosa y dulcisima voz. Uno de los mas grandes tenores del siglo pasado, sin dudas la mas dulce voz Jorge desde Buenos Aires
Great rendition with original lirics, can't believe what my ears listen to!! Matos Rodríguez by Schipa, this is unique. But in 1924 Gardel recorded the Contursi-Maroni "Si supieras.." and took it fame all over the world. Strange destiny for a song...

This is a great vocal indeed.Schipa was one of the finest light, lyric tenors of any era.His musicality, phrasing and diction were unmatched. He was very popular at the Teatro Colon opera house in Buenos Aires.Grazie mille for posting this great piece.Schipa sings this superbly.Che bella voce!
I love this tango. You post the best versions so one can compare. Each one has a distictive beauty. I know I repeat myself but the picture on the sheet music is just wonderful. You always match the music with the perfect visual. Thank you.
Schipa was a great performer of Spanish and Latinoamerican songs, as you point out in your comment, which is obvious when we hear this interpretation, which is a pure treat, wonderful.

Come to Argentina and see how many people remember Tito Schipa and how many remember Gardel!
