Amy Tan is not only the best writer ever, she is funny too! I really admire her, and read her books two or three times. Always finding new things in it. It is a pity that her latest is not in the shops over here.(Holland) Wishing Amy all the best!!
This pisses me off...you don't need to have a bad childhood to be a good writer. It's all in the imagination...sure, life experiences can fuel your writing, but if you have a really really really really active imagination, you can be just as good as a writer...it's all in natural talent in my opinion...I've written stories of things that have NEVER happened to me...and people have read them and said "wow, i thought i was the only person who went through that.." and I say "i didnt"
Fruiti, we're going to have to stop meeting this way...lol. It is about imagination, and definitely about talent, but I think people who have idyllic childhoods tend to spend less time escaping their reality through imagination. But I know you have the experience as a writer that there is always a bit of you in everything you write. And people always seem to love misery much more so than joy.
When you remember woman such as Lynn in "Coal Miner's Daughter" where she was born in poverty, and other women writing of abuse, saying the worse thing in your life is not going to summer camp, has got to be a sarcastic joke. Women write of being in concentration camps and raped, so if Tan was serious, it would get a yawn.
I don't remember Lynn in "Coal Miner's Daughter", because I've never heard of it. I was born in 1990. My culture doesn't go very far back.
And you never answered my question, at least not that I can find. I was asking if you knew details of Amy Tan's life other than the joke and what else she said here, because that would serve as a comparison to the seriousness of the "camp" statement - comparing the statement to that of -other- women would not. Other women have no relevance here.
She said it was a great tradegy, not going to summer camp. She never said it was the worst part. Not to mention, if you know about how her relationship with her mother was when she was young, it might make more sense.

She must be joking, being sarcastic about not going to summer camp being the worse part of a bad childhood
Cannot be serious. Still, it sounds silly.

Do you know the details of her life?
I don't, so I had no way to weigh the seriousness of this sentence, either.
I didn't know if her childhood really wasn't that bad after all, or if it was and she was just joking and being modest.

Sorry, missed the question. I've read an interview or two by her, and I don't see any details of an extradordinarly bad childhood.
I know that some Asian men complained about "The Joy Luck Club"
