I wouldn't say FIFA is more complex than Madden. I never watched American Football in my entire life so if you would pass me your game, I couldn't figure out what I had to do. So if you really know the sport it is much easier to master the game. But I really liked the gameplay because it's the first review from a person who isn't a fan of FIFA or PES (pro evolution soccer) so it's just a review of the pure gameplay.
Oh an play with the german national team next time. We are the best atm ;)
on the control scheme EVERY face button kicks the ball when in your in possession the triggers and bumpers all already do things such as sprint, walk, etc.. there actually isn't any other conceivable way to change that. its down to the player to stop holding A all the time but once you get the ball off the player and its free as in no one has it your player has no one to run after so A does nothing, ive been playing fifa for 12 years and i still kick it away sometimes but its my own fault.
I have played Fifa for years and years and always enjoyed the series it's the best football game on the market. But I do agree with Phil the game is much harder to play than any other Fifa Imo the defending is hard to get to grips with and even I who have played Fifa for years and years had trouble getting used too it. Don't have a go at Phil for not being great at the game he hasn't ever really played any football games before and is a novice give the guy a break.
18:50 it wont tell u that u have the ball cuse it would be lame, u just gotta see when ur player has the ball, ones he has it just stop holding the botton.. its easy ur just not use to it
i agree with your case about the button issue... but i just stopped pressing B and just held A... works well for me i still get the ball off the opponent and don't fuck up. :)
X (or whatever the button is on Xbox) is indeed the button to follow a player, but as you said yourself you can also use the joystick. I have been playing Fifa games since I was 7 -> 1999 and I didn't even know that! Everyone uses the joystick to defend and stay near an attacker.
Again this doesn't really say anything about the default buttons, but it's just weird that you can just "follow" a defender without doing something. First time I hear this.
First of all i would just like to say I'm sorry as i left a rather rude comment on one of your first videos of fifa 12 and that i 100% fully respect you for what you have to say about this game and i hope you will experience some gr8 times and develop better skills as you uncover the technical aspects of the game. :)
The hang of it and thats for anyone who wants to play FIFA experienced or newcomer. People requested you to try FIFA and thank you i respect that and it is the best selling sports game in the world thank you EA respect
Hey DSP nice video and this game is for experienced players. Im a fan of FIFA and for you as a beginner and no experience your doing alright and if you play it more often you will get the hang of it. Even though football/soccer is the most common sport in the world and people die over it and they take this sport as a religion. Anyways your right its not for newcomers and you will find tutorials in settings there cant be a game that has no tutorial if its not helpful just practice and you'll get
hey phil can u review pes 12 ??????????????we soccer fans will really apreaciate it because im confused on wich game to buy fifa 12 or pes12 i didnt like fifa12 defense and im thinking on givin pes12 a try
Football is the best sport ever and is not matched by stop-start shit like NFL. I dont agree with everything DSP is saying but about the same buttons being pressed for passing shooting pressure and slide tackle does piss me off. This is why I play PES (Pro Evolution Soccer). It hasnt got all the official licenses like FIFA but is a much MUCH better game and more fun to play. Its also more user friendly and great for newcomers. Give it a shot.
Also, i realise beginners will have no idea about this but, holding both triggers on defence is a lot more effective than using a/b. Holding A should only be used in moderation because it pulls players out of position.
There's really no 'one' way football is played. There are many different styles. Teams such as Arsenal, play a LOT of passing and wait for the final killer ball for an attempt on goal. Other teams such as Stoke, play the ball long to a tall striker so he can win it in the air and knock it down to a teammate. Barcelona play a team game and involve every single player in the team to create something.
There's no wrong way to play football. Unless of course, it doesn't work and you lose horribly.

The best way to play this game is to play on Professional difficulty or higher if you are learning. In any of the lower difficulties (like semi-pro) you can just sprint past defenders and run straight on goal, it's not realistic at all and YOU DON'T LEARN ANYTHING by playing like that.
I agree that the controls are retarded in how they directly tie in with each other (offense/defense A & B). DSP is right, this game takes quite a bit of practice to master, but well worth it.
the only problem is that people who actually acknowledged to the game just search on youtube for some footage and find DSP playing it. not knowing who DSP is, and of course they will react in the way they did as they expect sth else.
however, dsp should simply care less. at the beginning of the game, everyone plays shitty like that, especially when you don't even know anything about football. as an european football fan i can only say i found it quite amusing. reminded me of my own beginnings.
DSP I have to commend you for taking time out of your schedule to try out FIFA 12. Especially when you have no knowledge of the sport or the game and just had a general interest in trying it out after playing an American Football game like Madden. I myself have no knowledge of Football either. I do have to say I am appalled at some of the fanboys who think it's OK to insult you because you are new to the game or because you are American. WTF is wrong with people these days? Seriously.
Dude, you suck at the game and you're not even a soccer fan. You don't even know what offside is lol. You take no time to figure out how to play the game, you don't know how to shoot right. You're playing against a defense that don't even defend you and you constantly miss and whine. Go watch a video of the pro that play online and see how much strategy are involved in the game. It's not just about running up and down and kicking. If you say that's boring so are basketball lol.
@reptilexcq2 He pretty specifically says that he's unqualified to review the game. He gave a beginners thoughts, and recognised his own difficulties in playing the game.
Why don't you go watch some pro play it if it's such a big issue for you.
Ok, I can understand what you are saying about the controls and the speed in which the use of the buttons changes, it will take time to get used to it & you can always cancel the pass if your fast enough. However what I can't understand is how you cannot tell when you have gained possession of the ball, yes the camera is slighty far from the pitch but I still dont understand how you cannot tell you have the ball. You dont have round thingy, oh now you have round thingy, its very clear!
Phil, you raised some very interesting points. Screw what others say.
The control scheme was in place way back in FIFA 98. Back then, though, it wasn't an issue because you only tapped the defensive controls, eliminating any kind of overlap unless you mashed the buttons. When they introduced holding, it was only a minor learning curve for seasoned players. They never changed it because, as you guessed, we're all used to it.
Your criticism is perfectly valid, though I hope this clears it up.
what your saying about the controls they have actually changed the controls this year BUT you can change the controls back to what they where for previous versions, it you go to ''settings'' > ''wireless control/ xbox control? settings'' > go down to the bottom there should be an option ''defending'' at default its '' tactical defending'' you can change it to ''legacy defending'' :D hope it helps
i do find that you do have some americans saying 'oh football/soccers shit' well no its not you clearly haven't watched a football season, fair enough you get brits saying american footballs shit which again it isn't, the only thing that annoys me with american football is the name i mean they bearly kick the ball -_-
Phil considering you've never played a football/soccer game, I think you did quite well, I think there are tutorial videos in the game somewhere, unless they've taken them out now, you are definitely right about it not having a good enough tutorial system for beginners hopefully in the next on EA will take that into consideration for fifa 13, as an english person ive got a very high expectation because i have been around football since i was born, i and many others forget that others havent

As a FIFA gamer for nearly a decade I do believe that they need a tutorial for newcomers to the series. When you select the difficulty "Beginner" they should make you do a tutorial which explains the rules, controls etc.
If you want to get better at FIFA I suggest that you go to the Arena, press the select button (or xbox equivalent) and change the amount of players on the other team and get used the mechanics.
I think you could say the same thing about any gaming franchise about not being user friendly. You never see an in game manual on how to play the latest Halo or Gears. Nice to see DSP enjoy FIFA even if he didn't fully understand it though.
19:23 uh, let me justify it, you let go of A and you don't mash the B button you time it. Also, if they had a booklet they still would've said the same things. They didn't explain the rules in Madden either but you didn't mention that. I know I'm experienced but I always know who is in possession.
12:43 The "common gamer" is going to know what those things are as the "common gamer" who doesn't know about football wouldn't buy the game. It didn't take long for me to understand the fifa controls at all because I already knew about the footbal and the rules. 13:50 This is also my personal opinion on American Football, oh he rushes 2 yards +30 secs oh he loses 0.5 yards +30 secs, oh the ref blew the whistle for an unkown reason +1min. Other than that I thought this vid was pretty solid.
oh phil there is a manual in the game for some reason they did not print it but put it in the game. i think maybe to save paper. look on the main menu.
The majority of games in real football or "soccer" are far too repetative, just like real football/soccer, and why would you play a game inside, on a computer when you can go outside and play with "friends" (these are people you know and have a sort of relationship with)?
@akba666 How many friends do you have? You can play from 2 people, playing football in weather other than sun is always better (in my opinion) and theyre not really pro's, are they? Theyre virtual representations that have been constructed to look like famous football players, in a virtual stadium, made to look like the real ones and a virtual crowd. I hate football, but i love playing it outside.
@BishopBasher92 playing with 2 people is not fun, it barely counts as practice. playing in the weather is never better (imo). they represent pro and if you can't even suspend your disbelief that much then your life must be boring as fuck.
@akba666 dont talk to me about suspending disbelief (nice DSP quote) when you cant imagine playing with two people, one in net, one striking, sounds like a perfect practice for me (granted only for striking and goal keeping). The fact that you stay inside playing video games provides no doubt in my mind that your life is as boring as fuck.
@BishopBasher92 LMAO, suspending disbelief is now a DSP quote? i can imagine playing with 2 people, it's just boring as fuck. who the fuck wants to be goalkeeper? oh right, no one. it's barely better than just shooting empty net by yourself. stay in a nice clean place playing video game is better than standing in the rain shooting PK back and forth like idiots. the fact that you bothered to argue with someone on youtube proves to me that your life is no better than anyone else' here.
I forgot to say that if you do play NHL 12, On offense, to pass the puck is right bumper or right trigger. Both of the buttons work. I tell you this because that's the only thing the game doesn't tell you. By the way, the controls are better in this game too.
Phil, Madden 12 is not an arcade style game It IS a simalation. What you're talking about, being able to just jump in a play are called play and plug games, which I guess Madden 12 is too. You should play NHL 12. It's more user friendly than Fifa 12 and has more totoruals. Also, EA Games does have the game mannaus in them and not just the hints that pop up. The game manuak is usually found in My Settings, i.e MY Madden, My Fifa, and My NHL 12.
I agree that the game is hard for complete beginners who do not even watch the sport...
But I think the tackle and contain buttons are fine. The tackle button is meant to be tapped, so after the tackle you shouldn't be still pressing it.
The contain button is not meant for you to get possession, it is meant for you to "contain" the attacking player, blocking crosses and shots. And during the transition between no-possession to possession there should be enough time for you to stop holding it.
I must agree that the game isn't "user friendly" for the common gamer but I'm not quite sure that FIFA 12 was made for the common gamer... I mean there's a whole lot of stuff to do in that game, lots of technical stuff that would confused the common gamer... Hell, I mean, I play soccer since I'm 5 but I never really watch soccer (sometimes MLS games) and this game takes time to adjust and getting used to it... but gotta admit, Phil is doing good for someone who doesn't really understand the game
of the pitch and who you can pass to. I'm far from an expert at the series but I know a bit and I'd love to do a tutorial vid to FIFA and football in general if I knew best way to record lol I've got madden 09 and over the years (as well as catching superbowl every year) I've gained an understanding of the basics, but I always leave the CPU to do the plays lol I practically self taught myself NBA rules watching during the 90's so it is possible, just takes a while to pick everything up :)
..released, certainly on a fun and realistic level, it emulates the flow of real football very well. Of course, not so good for newbies to the sport :) I was surprised by no manual myself, feel its a poor move by EA, especially with no 'basics' tutorials in the game. I'd suggest messing around in the Arena mode (hit dpad to practice free kicks/pens/practice match too) and trying matches on beginner difficulty with passing assists on at first. I like Co-op camera too as it gives u a better view
Never seen your vids but it's interesting hearing your opinions. You'll find a lot of teams use long balls,a kick and rush tactic. If you can be effective with it,and have the correct kind of players who can play that way,it's fine.
I'd recommend you use custom buttons, and change the contain and tackle button.
Basic football is simple and fun as it only requires a ball and the classic 'jumpers for goalposts', but of course playing with all the rules and bringing any tactics in to a game is of course a different story, so kudos to ya for more than giving it a go by the sound of it. :) I've been playing FIFA since '95 on the megadrive and I will say that the new defending system this year is taking me some getting used to. :) I still think though that FIFA 12 is quite possibly the best sports game to be
people need to understand that for Phil american football is the standard just like soccer is for some of us like me. I had no clue what was going on in madden when he played it but i still had a lot of fun watching it because of his commentary and i even begun to understand it.
He is doing a favor for his fans playing a game that he might have not enjoyed at all. The unjustified complaints and vulgar raging definitely wont encourage him to keep trying out games that we request.
FIFA 12 is horrible ! It's a very sophisticated anti-game. They pretend that they worked on the realism with two sophisticated tricks (Impact Engine and new defense system) but I still put surrealistics scores online and get my ass kicked the same way. With 12 minutes of game vs 90 in real football what's the interest of building the game around those defending moves when it's possible to do some of them by yourself. Awful castle of cards. I'm so disappointed... Again ! :o(
are prime examples that come to mind. As far as online is concerned, yea, if you don't know anything about soccer it will be extremely hard as people online are very good.
Finally the last part when you mentionned you don't like to pass the ball back and forth all the time, but like to go forward, That's called direct playing in football, clubs such as manchester united and real madrid are prime examples of such football. It involves getting the ball forward as fast as possible as soon as gaining posession and taking a shot when you see an opening and go for it.
The back and forth passing is called possession play and teams such as Barcelona, Arsenal etc...
As far as controls... I can assure you that not even as a beginner, when you do not have the ball possession and you attempt to tackle a player who ends up not touching the ball, you have to hold L2 and R2 together to cancel the tackle if not you send the ball out, usually where to where it shouldn't go. You get used to it after a while, but it's counter intuitive.
I'm a huge FIFA fan. I'm sure theres bigger, but I put about 1500 games in fifa 11. I love soccer and I have a fairly good understanding of it. So first off. I loved your review and I think from an average gamer's point of view. I fully agree with you that for anyone who doesn' know soccer this is intimidating. A full tutorial on what are passes and basic soccer tactics would be very welcome.
This being said, the reason why this game is amazing is the level of depth that was put into it.
I actually thought you were really cautious in what you were saying, because it has a really large community. I think you should not have cared. Because, as a beginner, your complaints were right.
This game requires probably years of practice, so don't worry about the stupid people posting thinking playing the game fluently comes in a second (they forget it took them also some time).
Anyway have fun with the game and dont worry too much about the shitheads. :)
Hey Phil dont listen to those people whining. They prolly have a brain of a squirrel and cant replace themselves in a person new to the sport.
Anyway I never commentate on your videos but do watch them frequently and there is NOTHING wrong with your fifa videos as a starter. I played football games for like 15 years and it is now easy enough for me.Furthermore I find this video SPOT ON. You're absolutely right this NOT being user friendly for newcomers, I actually thought you were holding back.
I hate soccer because I think it's the dumbest sport ever creative, I mean
kick a ball, pass the ball and kick the ball at the gol. I say this because I live at Brazil, where everyone is fanatic and I don't know how people like soccer so much... It's just my opinion and I don't hate someone just because they like a sport.
Yes the controls for defending were different last year, you can change them back in the options, but it's worse in my opinion. Also on the main menu they're more tutorials :)
Well, it doesn't mean you can't change the controller settings. I always have used B for high pass (I don't know how it's called in English), A for ground pass, Y for a forward pass so the player can run to the ball and X for shooting or throwing out the ball in "emergency" situations. RT for rushing, RB for selecting a different player, and LB and LT for different quality moves.
Just get used to it, and try looking up for tutorials. "Jumping to a quick match" is not the best idea for a beginner

on the control scheme EVERY face button kicks the ball when in your in possession the triggers and bumpers all already do things such as sprint, walk, etc.. there actually isn't any other conceivable way to change that. its down to the player to stop holding A all the time but once you get the ball off the player and its free as in no one has it your player has no one to run after so A does nothing, ive been playing fifa for 12 years and i still kick it away sometimes but its my own fault.

Most video games are hard and require you to put in effort to play them.
Doesn't mean that it cannot be enjoyable but you simply have to put in effort.
Whether it is fun or not depends on what you fun is enjoyable to do.
If grinding is your definition of fun, gaining XP, levelling up, then fine it is fun.
If not, it is a fucking bitch to carry out.
Thus, all opinion is relative to your own perspective and references (i.e. background knowledge) that you have.

About the tackle button:
X (or whatever the button is on Xbox) is indeed the button to follow a player, but as you said yourself you can also use the joystick. I have been playing Fifa games since I was 7 -> 1999 and I didn't even know that! Everyone uses the joystick to defend and stay near an attacker.
Again this doesn't really say anything about the default buttons, but it's just weird that you can just "follow" a defender without doing something. First time I hear this.

Unless of course, it doesn't work and you lose horribly.

stumble858 4 months ago
The best way to play this game is to play on Professional difficulty or higher if you are learning. In any of the lower difficulties (like semi-pro) you can just sprint past defenders and run straight on goal, it's not realistic at all and YOU DON'T LEARN ANYTHING by playing like that.
I agree that the controls are retarded in how they directly tie in with each other (offense/defense A & B). DSP is right, this game takes quite a bit of practice to master, but well worth it.
lilpeto187 4 months ago
the only problem is that people who actually acknowledged to the game just search on youtube for some footage and find DSP playing it. not knowing who DSP is, and of course they will react in the way they did as they expect sth else.
however, dsp should simply care less. at the beginning of the game, everyone plays shitty like that, especially when you don't even know anything about football. as an european football fan i can only say i found it quite amusing. reminded me of my own beginnings.

Clutchology 4 months ago
what your saying about the controls they have actually changed the controls this year BUT you can change the controls back to what they where for previous versions, it you go to ''settings'' > ''wireless control/ xbox control? settings'' > go down to the bottom there should be an option ''defending'' at default its '' tactical defending'' you can change it to ''legacy defending'' :D hope it helps

The majority of games in real football or "soccer" are far too repetative, just like real football/soccer, and why would you play a game inside, on a computer when you can go outside and play with "friends" (these are people you know and have a sort of relationship with)?
BishopBasher92 5 months ago
@BishopBasher92 because it's difficult to gather enough people? because of the weather? because you want to play the pros?
akba666 5 months ago
@akba666 How many friends do you have? You can play from 2 people, playing football in weather other than sun is always better (in my opinion) and theyre not really pro's, are they? Theyre virtual representations that have been constructed to look like famous football players, in a virtual stadium, made to look like the real ones and a virtual crowd. I hate football, but i love playing it outside.
BishopBasher92 5 months ago
@BishopBasher92 playing with 2 people is not fun, it barely counts as practice. playing in the weather is never better (imo). they represent pro and if you can't even suspend your disbelief that much then your life must be boring as fuck.
akba666 5 months ago
@akba666 dont talk to me about suspending disbelief (nice DSP quote) when you cant imagine playing with two people, one in net, one striking, sounds like a perfect practice for me (granted only for striking and goal keeping). The fact that you stay inside playing video games provides no doubt in my mind that your life is as boring as fuck.
BishopBasher92 5 months ago

Gamefan113 5 months ago
Phil, Madden 12 is not an arcade style game It IS a simalation. What you're talking about, being able to just jump in a play are called play and plug games, which I guess Madden 12 is too. You should play NHL 12. It's more user friendly than Fifa 12 and has more totoruals. Also, EA Games does have the game mannaus in them and not just the hints that pop up. The game manuak is usually found in My Settings, i.e MY Madden, My Fifa, and My NHL 12.
Gamefan113 5 months ago
I agree that the game is hard for complete beginners who do not even watch the sport...
But I think the tackle and contain buttons are fine. The tackle button is meant to be tapped, so after the tackle you shouldn't be still pressing it.
The contain button is not meant for you to get possession, it is meant for you to "contain" the attacking player, blocking crosses and shots. And during the transition between no-possession to possession there should be enough time for you to stop holding it.
RokujyuuyonShou 5 months ago

CEWIIH 5 months ago
Never seen your vids but it's interesting hearing your opinions. You'll find a lot of teams use long balls,a kick and rush tactic. If you can be effective with it,and have the correct kind of players who can play that way,it's fine.
I'd recommend you use custom buttons, and change the contain and tackle button.
GazVonhammer 5 months ago
Basic football is simple and fun as it only requires a ball and the classic 'jumpers for goalposts', but of course playing with all the rules and bringing any tactics in to a game is of course a different story, so kudos to ya for more than giving it a go by the sound of it. :) I've been playing FIFA since '95 on the megadrive and I will say that the new defending system this year is taking me some getting used to. :) I still think though that FIFA 12 is quite possibly the best sports game to be
CEWIIH 5 months ago
people need to understand that for Phil american football is the standard just like soccer is for some of us like me.

Again ! :o(

Rushky83 5 months ago
Finally the last part when you mentionned you don't like to pass the ball back and forth all the time, but like to go forward, That's called direct playing in football, clubs such as manchester united and real madrid are prime examples of such football. It involves getting the ball forward as fast as possible as soon as gaining posession and taking a shot when you see an opening and go for it.
The back and forth passing is called possession play and teams such as Barcelona, Arsenal etc...
Rushky83 5 months ago
As far as controls... I can assure you that not even as a beginner, when you do not have the ball possession and you attempt to tackle a player who ends up not touching the ball, you have to hold L2 and R2 together to cancel the tackle if not you send the ball out, usually where to where it shouldn't go. You get used to it after a while, but it's counter intuitive.
Rushky83 5 months ago
I'm a huge FIFA fan. I'm sure theres bigger, but I put about 1500 games in fifa 11. I love soccer and I have a fairly good understanding of it. So first off. I loved your review and I think from an average gamer's point of view. I fully agree with you that for anyone who doesn' know soccer this is intimidating. A full tutorial on what are passes and basic soccer tactics would be very welcome.
This being said, the reason why this game is amazing is the level of depth that was put into it.
Rushky83 5 months ago
I actually thought you were really cautious in what you were saying, because it has a really large community. I think you should not have cared. Because, as a beginner, your complaints were right.
This game requires probably years of practice, so don't worry about the stupid people posting thinking playing the game fluently comes in a second (they forget it took them also some time).
Anyway have fun with the game and dont worry too much about the shitheads. :)

Yes the controls for defending were different last year, you can change them back in the options, but it's worse in my opinion. Also on the main menu they're more tutorials :)

thats deffinetely true, Fifa 12 isn't exactly friendly to new players. I thought Phil would bash the shit out of it but his view was very balanced :)
