The Launch/Entry suits are supplied by the Dave Clark Company. These are pressure suits whose primary purpose is to protect the crew in case there a loss of cabin pressure at liftoff.

can't they just be any colour?
but then it's NASA thee worlds mosty fameous organisation for using rockets in the name of science so there has to be a reason

They're orange because that makes them highly visible. In case of a bailout, NASA wants to make sure that they can find the astronauts.
