This is one of my very favorite bits of Sutherlandia. I love the ring of her voice coming back from the house, every tone focused for maximum "vendetta effect". The recit has such variety and pace. Look at her face after she sings "col dargli morte" just as she launches into the aria proper--such steely coldness. The appogiature are quite mild and appropriate, I think--not all over the place. What a voice, and what music. Mozart is divine, and so is our Joan.
Melosmond, Sorry you are wrong. There is a run the first season in the new house when Sutherland sang Donna Anna under Bohm. The rest of the cast is Siepi, Lorengar, Gedda, Flagello, Bacquier. The broadcast is Jan. 28, 1967 (there were 4 other performances prior to this in Jan. 1967). Not yet been rebroadcast by Sirius, but it IS a great performance, as is this video from 11 years LATER. First saw her in 1960 in Dallas with almost complete EMI cast (but under Rescigno, not Giulini).
Dame Joan never sang under Bohm. Leaving aside the unnecessary dig at Bonynge, you probably mean Giulini. A beautiful early effort but nothing like the depth of voice here. As for the extremely modest decoration, sorobji, it is perfectly authentic.
The Met should put this on DVD unlike some of their terrible broadcasts. Sutherland and Brecknock are wonderful. Mind you her Donna Anna under Bohm is something else, show,s you what she could have done if she had more conductors to work with.
Sutherland is a truly great Donna Anna, and I recall the thrill of seeing and hearing her in the role. One would probably have to go back to Lilli Lehmann and Tietjens to find her equal. The voice has the weight, flexibility, purity of tone and line, and dramatic expression needed for this demanding role.
I love Dame Joan in this role. Her voice is so securely anchored in the torso, the middle voice is big, and the tone so ringing. Brava Dame Joan......and Mozart :)
Well said!

Sempre quei problemini, anzi problemoni, con la pronuncia dell'italiano, però qui stranamente mi piace!

You lucky people who got to see her live. She is magnificent...the consummate Donna Anna.

@Operaman41 I love her for saying that because it is. I also love her for pointing out that it's quite difficult to do properly :)

I've never been a fan of hers, but I have to say this is pretty good despite those awful appoggiaturas.
