The 'I gave you a kingdom' verse may be awkward but the structure of this song is beautiful and her vocals are some of her most passionate. I'm glad she finally performed it. I think, more than anything, Tori was embarrassed by how the record did commercially and traumatized by the Billboard review, which I think was grossly misinterpreted. She still insists they called her a bimbo but I've read it several times and it said that while her image might suggest, the music demonstrated otherwise.
right after the album came out she took the album out of print and wont re release it. i saw the vinyl LP almost 10 years ago in a used media shop, and it had a 325 dollar pricetag on it...thats why she wont play this stuff at her gigs, she hates it!!
y kant tori read is way better than everything on "the beekeeper" and afterwards. i'd take "floating city" and "fire on the side" over shit like "ireland" and "posse bonus" any day....
she really should consider redoing some of the y kant tori read stuff. It was much better than she gives it credit. She's just holding a grudge at this point
The song as a whole, sounds a bit like something from Madonna's "Like A Prayer" album, or Berlin's "Take My Breath Away". But the voice is unmistakenly Tori Amos.
This song sounds cool because of the way her voice is recorded and of course, the hook, but...c'mon the lyrics are terrible. The narrative of the man who won't let his woman love him...talk of boundaries, "danger zones," getting through the night---the whole romantic desperation thing was so trite the moment it appeared and nobody, not even Tori, could ever make it work. Plus, that Spanish guitar flourish epidemic strikes again here near the bridge. Puke!
Its the first time Ive heard this and Thankyou! Ive been a Tori fan for years but never been lucky enough to find any of the Y kant Tori Read stuff. Its as awesome as all her others :D
Such beauty, such grace, pure genius femininity, so fragile and yet so strong; the kind of entity we all need in our lives... and when we "find" it, we don't have the slightest clue on how we can thank her for everything she's given/ing us. Overwhelming matchless passion we can repay, partly, at her concerts and when buying her albums. As Tori herself says, it takes to (artist and listeners) to make a great show. (see next comment)
Tori you might never get a chance to read this, however, I apologize on behalf of all your fans, we are all sincerely sorry for not being there for you in 1987 when you recorded "Y Kant Tori Read" and in '88 when you released them sweet "girls", aka songs, to flood every fiber of our beings.
So, don't forget to give something back, to show respect and appreciation, whenever somebody, like this full of genius sweet creature Tori Amos, gives you something as beautiful as these everlasting "girls"
I just saw her in Philadelphia two weeks ago. I wish she would play Y Kant Tori Read stuff. It is some of my favorite Tori music. All artists go through phases though. And she can only fit so much into a concert.

It wasn't until I took in the lyrics of this song, that I realized what a brilliant song it was.

I could see Josh Groban tweaking this song and making a cover of it lol. I don't know why but I love this song and she should sing it again.
