I love how he extends the right leg to stop the forward motion and transfer that energy to the upper body, allowing him to maximize force on the ball.
Great Explosion! However, his mechanics are slightly troubling. His elbows get too high in his arm action, creating a slight inverted w. This would normally be a big problem because of the extra rotation on the shoulder, but since his stride is so long, it gives his arm time to catch up to his body, eliminating most of the timing problem. If he stays in the bullpen he will be fine. If he becomes a starter he will have to fix this.
@SmoshFan8123 You're 100% correct. HOWEVER, if mlb enforces that, then Tim Licecum and about 20 other pitches will go down with him, and I don't think mlb is willing to risk that right now.
@publicatdamagnificen Actually, just about every decent pitcher would go down as well. Your both wrong. The rules do not state that a pitcher cannot disengage from the rubber in the ACT of throwing a pitch once he has committed to throwing a pitch. This isn't a flaw that your not supposed to have. EVERY great pitcher gets out an extra foot or so by disengaging. There's even a mechanic that causes it to be efficient. It's a fascinating study actually.
@publicatdamagnificen Glad I could help. Check out Nolan Ryan's mechanics if you can. It might be hard to find a good video of them on the internet, as I learned what I'm talking about from a Tom House seminar, but at the very least, check out some of the best pitchers out there. Realistically, all the greats do it to an extent, but even more so, the ones that just mow guys down with dominance do it perfectly.
@publicatdamagnificen What I mean is, even a guy like Greg Maddux or Roy Halladay, the kind of guys that carve hitters to death do it. But a Nolan Ryan, or a Pedro Martinez, or guys that are just filth do it even more. The mechanic is just before foot strike the back foot's heel lifts off the ground before it rolls onto the shoelaces. Some even begin to drag off the rubber before foot strike by doing this perfectly.
@SmoshFan8123 It is not a balk. I am assuming you are talking about the fact that his back foot is not touching the rubber when he releases the ball. There is no Major League rule involving the placement of the feet upon release, just at the beginning of the motion.

@JGmartinezJr if he becomes dominant expect a team to complain about his "jumping" toward home plate delivery.

Did you know that everyone single time he pitches, he balks?
SmoshFan8123 4 months ago 15
@SmoshFan8123 True, Walden's foot is off the rubber before the pitch is actually thrown, but hey, if he can get away with, I say keep using it.
