How long the audience of opera houses of the world will have to tolerate stupid modernities of this kind, whose only purpose is to satisfy the vanity of the directors who, by their turn, don't give a damn about the people who are watching or what the composer wanted? If we didn't hear the music, we wouldn't know that this is Salome. I remember that it was the same with a recent production of the Entfuehrung of Mozart in Salzburg, that could not make any sense. It's a shame.
I quite like this production, because there is always room for another interpretation than there is in the libretto, right? We see it in many operas, one hasn't has to stick to the libretto today. And the way the music fits this scene... I believe it is a good production, because of this argument. If it would be totally different it wouldn't make sense, but this scene does make sense. At least to me. I like it. ^^
such a typical staging for the sächsische staatsoper--ultra low-budget and bizarre...at least the staatskapelle sounds fairly good--the only thing that saves this production...
very good, really nice take on the underline of the text... how the mother sells her teenage daughter to Herode's predatory sexual requirements... while Salome is obsessed with the Baptist and in a very awkward way, consents to the deal... yes, wonderful acting.
you should consider at least two more modern production of Salome on DVD as good as the version with Stratas. The best for me is the version with Maria Ewing (1992)ant the one with Malfitano.
This production is a shame for the Semperoper, where Salome got his worldpremiere. I don't understand why singers wanted to play and sing here. Is it only for the money????
As far as I know the premiere itself was considered a shame for opera back then, wasn't it?
Doesn't this mean that the very same things that make this setting that "baddest" probably make it appropriate too? Maybe... What I see here is this opera's substance, i.e. sensuality, obsession and madness. I wouldn't exchange it for the usual 10 minutes of lame exotic belly dance, sorry.
This "substance" does not belongs to this musicdrama. For me "Salome" (Wilde/Strauss) is much more than "sensuality, obsession and madness". I don't like "exotic belly dance".
The way Teresa Stratas dances is not a "belly dance", sorry.
The aesthetics of Wilde and Strauss are an expression of a dying culture. Their exoticism stands for something far more and completely different than mere exoticism in itself. At least that's what I think.
We are in a very crucial point in history ourselves, and I believe we have much in common: decadence. And, of course, people who tend to believe they know what is best for everyone else. See for yourself if you belong to this group...
To me the substance of Art is to be found at all those things that, fortunately or not, seem to persist unaltered through time.
I'm sorry if I have to turn this into a much broader discourse, but it ain't that simple at all. I do theatre myself, professionally, and to me entertaining the crowd is by far the least important thing. Consciusness of apparently less prominent facts is my primal concern. Anyway, that's much too much already... Enough for me.
This "Salome" I've seen in december 2005 in Dresden. It's the baddest of all and I left the theater with headache, for the orchestra was bad too. This production is the opposite of the Friedrich/Böhm-production, the best of all, with Teresa Stratas as Salomé, beautiful to see and to hear!
Umm very unusual indeed! Such a strange set too... This is just SO weird! It gets weirder and weirder! Is that supposed to be Jokanaan on the edge there? Thanks.
At least she doesn't quite sit on his face. Maybe this was just the undress rehearsal?

I don't think the director had a clue as to how to direct this scene.
SOLOME is supposed to be SEDUCING herod...not being timid!
This really is terrible.

We call this "Eurotrash" opera here.

shame that this Salomé is too blasé to dance-didn't Herlitzius start her career as a dancer? Her Bayreuth Brünnhilde looked quite Pina Bausch-like.
Maybe in some other production we might se her really go for it

Sorry. I just don't understand what they are supposed to be doing on this stage. I don't see the Wilde/Strauss story here anywhere

Search: Strauss Salome Dance of the Seven Veils part 1
This is the real Salome! (part 1 and 2)
"The dance of the seven veils" is NOT a "belly-dance".
