Well that just proves how fresh Waitrose's fish is!!!! Yes it is NORMAL for that to happen. You may have a problem though if you like to eat cod raw though!!!!
Totally normal... I'm a fishmonger that has removed many of these worms from fillets of fish. I've been in the business for 25 yrs and I haven't killed any one yet.... To my knowledge ;-)
we find those worms in our pacific halibut all the time.if I see them before we freeze the fish,I pick them out alive.after frozen and you cook them well, they wont hurt you.after skinning a filet,I hold the filet up to a light, locate the worms and pick them out.I do that for the wife and guests. They are what they eat,and if well cooked,I believe that they will not hurt you.alot of people just cook the fish and eat them.no joke.
Worst case ever of worms I ever encountered was not Waitrose. Bought eel from the market. Oh my days when I got home that eel was walking out all by itself with worms. It was riddled to the core, right through. Probably more worms than eel at that stage. I couldn't stomach it at all so it went right in the bin :(
it is totally normal i work on meat and fish in a waitrose and the other day a customer came in with a worm and she bought £20 of monkfish so think ya self lucky it was only a couple of quid! thing is we do are best to detect the worms they do get check but when the fish is really cold the worm burys deeper in to the flesh but when the fish gets warm the worm comes to the surface there is not alot that can be done!! but a refund or replacement

I work on the fish and meat counters in waitrose, and the problem with white fish such as Whitting, Cod, and Haddock is that they eat sea plants which have worm eggs on them, the worms end up living in the fish cuts, and on occasion the worms will go into the flesh, even though it is unpleasant, it is safe to eat it when cooked as the heat will kill the worms and bacteria. This happened to my mum in tesco :/
Yeah Dude my girlfriend is always making me dinner and she said that she always takes them away and then you cook the fish and voillå you have a dinner on your plate!
This is very normal and not dangerous or anything. There are worms in all fish and it dies when you cook it and it's also very healthy. Nothing to worry about.
I just cooked my cod fillet from fresh direct and found an inch and a half long worm.. I cooked it about 5minutes and I ate it half way and found a red circle (the worm). I was afraid to eat it. but from reading these comment maybe I'll re cook it like 10 minutes more and eat it?!
I'm glad I'm not the only one who was totally freaked out finding worms in my fish. I was going to cook it for my baby! I also phoned Waitrose and they told me it was normal. They didn't even offer a refund. It has put me off cod for good.
As someone whose Family have been in the fish business for fifty years I can confirm cod and others species have worms. They are harmless and it's impossible to remove them all. They will not breed or infest your brain as I've been told by idiots in the past.
OMG!! get a life!! of course the fish has worms in it, most animals, including ourselves have parasites! it's perfectly normal, when you cook them they die! What difference is eating a dead worm, your already eating a dead fish!!
Commercial fisherman here...some fish have worms. Not a measure of freshness at all. In fact these worms inhabit the fish when it is still swimming about in the sea. They are virtually undetectable during processing. This being said, a reputable dealer will replace or refund if it is too much for you.
@LuLuCardigan Actually the worms are still there in the fishsticks. They are just chopped up in little pieces with the fish. So either way your eating worms.
Do you really think that? Do you honestly think Waitrose would risk losing their reputation just for one customer? Like you said they are a reputable company. Stupid.
For goodness sake you idiot get a life, if you don't like the service or the food there shop somehwhere else, have you nothing better to do than make videos about it?
The fuck are you talking about, if you buy meat products or any product from somewhere as reputable as waitrose, you don't expect to have worms in it! (Unless of course you bought worms...)
absolutely normal for parasitic worms to be found in cod. i hardly think you have grounds to sue waitrose! just use ur salmon tweezers to remove them and get on with cooking the damn thing! i'd honestly recommend buying from the fish counter next time, so you can check your piece of cod fillet if it creeps you out so much.
@nytram414 Key words are Specialist and Trained. What consumer is trained enough in fish knowledge that they know it has a high probability of containing worms? Answer, I know of no one at all. The reason they don't tell anyone is because no one would buy it anymore, causing them to lose lots of money. It's always all about the money. It takes 2 seconds to make an advisory sign. And instead of giving a refund they just tell people that it's "Normal". lol people are so gullible.
They are natural worms that occour in the sea. They attach themselves to the Cod and are completely harmless. Waitrose tries to source its cod from waters in which nematodes are not present, but you can never guarentee that the waters are nematode free.
Despite their obviously unappealing look they are completely harmless to human consumption. If there was a chance of any ill effects Food standards agency wouldnt let waitrose sell this product!
The worms are a totally normal occurrence, often found in cod - I'm sure that if you had taken them back the welcome desk at the branch you bought them would have been more than happy to replace and refund you if you were not entirely happy with the product.
As for the fact you've posted it on youtube - you've just left yourself open to insults from people who know about fish.
Lol at the "line caught PRIME", that just means its caught humanely. boneless, skinless + thick.
thats perfectly normal - what happens is when fish are frozen, the worms bury deeper into the flesh to try to escape the cold. waitrose has a number of inspections to check for these and do their best to remove them but when you get a good thick piece of meat its very difficult. as the fish warms up again from frozen the worms re-surface but they are killed when fish is cooked - completly harmless!
Get a life! Why make a video?!?! Just take it back to the shop and ask them to sort it out. From my experience, they are exceptionally positive to any problems.
mangoe1564 Is 100% Right, I will say In Waitrose defence that these Worms being Live like they are only Show that the Fish you Brought Was Very Fresh, as the Worms only normally Live a few days after the Fish is Processed (Fillited). They are Harmless if they are Cooked and will of done you No harm what so ever.
They Are easly seen when Whit Fish is Smoked as the Turn a dark Red Colour, when Fish is Fresh and the Flesh Is white it isnt Easy to see them, untill they come out of the Flesh.
A friend of mine used to have a fish van at a market he was telling me these worms are normal and nothing to worry about. Must admit id probably find it abit off putting but i guess thats something id just have to get over.
I'm a supervisor at Waitrose Rickmansworth (group J) and I would like to appologise for the disgust that you suffered.
However, I'm affraid that the paracitic worms in the fish are not a problem becuase nearly all cod and haddock have them. This may only be a problem if you like eating your fish raw...
The worm is a parasite that lives in the fish as part of its life cycle. The adult parasite lives in the stomach of the common or grey seal, and fertilised eggs pass into the sea with the seals excreta. The eggs hatch to give a microscopic worm which must be swallowed by a small fish or shrimp like animal. The white fish, such as cod or haddock, then become contaminated by eating the small fish. The worm burrows through the stomach wall of the fish, into the liver and flesh.

because it costs him time to reply to complaints against his branch and because he doesnt want to have to dispose of stock and lose his yearly bonus.

@Razzmond1989 And don't forget they sell the products by weight. So your paying for the worms that you never wanted to buy to begin with.
