  • I just realised that Jeremy killed himself on my birthday, March 31st :D Yay?

  • I love the fact that this game is based on Lovecraft's books

  • I like the way he runs XD lol it's so funny but cool game though

  • I have no interest in the game whatsoever and was watching it just because I like the silly old graphics, but... wow. That journal was amazing to listen to, I'm sure it's much better like this than in English! Amazing! Makes me want to look through the entire walkthrough just for those little bits.

Conspiracies, nightmares and madness all sounds way better in french! :D

  • Sheesh! That guy wrote his whole life story in that notebook!

  • Is that thing suppose to be a Werewolf?

  • this game need to know how to speak fukin english

  • that is one long diary wrightthung up if you agree

  • And You, my friend, did You pray for Jeremy's poor soul today? :(

  • What is the POKER USED FORRRRR???w

    GAAAAAWWWHHHHHHHH

  • The man in black is Nyarlathotep in his human form; a tall man of pure black skin. It's an Old One from H.P. Lovecraft's stories, which this game is based upon.

  • @Yapostadodat In which story Nyarlathotep is shown as a dark man? I'd like to read it.

  • @POLE7645 In the "The dreams in the Witch House", by the way, your walkthrough help me a lot with the game. Thanks.

  • @Yapostadodat yes is nyarlathotep, lovecraft describes hin in the myths of cthulhu in the shot tale "the shadow over insmouth"

    sorry for my english------

  • "the man in black showed his true colors..." now that is racist xD

  • @Tfirmin001 It's the "Man in Black" (man dressed in black) not "Black Man".

  • @POLE7645 i know, i was joking... :D

  • I understand what his diary said. Thanks for helping me so much to learn to know to the beat game

  • what is the Poker used for

  • What the fuck is up with that mansion? It´s also weird that the character had absolutely no reaction when it first met a zombie or a beast like that. Still very interesting game.

  • What will happen if you touch the ghost?

  • 8:20 OCCUPIED (or should I say octo-pied)

  • I like the narration (good acting). It was'nt there in the version I played back then.

  • 8:33 Unfair long-range attack. o.O

  • i would have pray´d for him :)

  • i love your commentarys

  • "Je suis décidé à tenir ce journal"

As someone in the process of learning french, why is it "je suis décidé" and not "j'ai décidé?"

  • @segmentationfault

Because with that form, it means more or less "I convinced myself to write this diary." My English wasn't very good at the time.

  • @segmentationfault its the same as saying I WAS decided to do smthing, and saying I decided (which in french is had decided) to do smthing!

  • @Justplainpavek

I realized what the OP stated in response: Its more or less saying "I convinced myself" rather than "I have decided" since "décider" can also mean "to persuade." So he is literally saying "I am persuaded to keep this journal." "I was decided" is not something that makes sense in english.

  • @segmentationfault it says "je suis décidé" for "je me suis décidé"

as already said "I convinced myself to write this diary"

  • to block the demons from his house Hartwood drew a pentagram (tho its satanic by nature) if drawn correctly it protects the home from demonic intruders, but a single little flaw in the symbol can cause the monsters to invade your privacy but not leave it because they are trapped INSIDE (think of it as a one way door)

  • 1:34 What is that? A crazy Dodo bird from hell?

  • I still have this game and the box! For PC! It is all in English though.. and the music is a bit more epic, I'm afraid.

  • it remember running was hard... didnt always work

  • Too much french dialoge,

  • @west1npriobe

it´s a french game, what did you expect? korean?

  • Johanner it's 16, I believe.

  • I love how guy speaks.

  • how can i be so scared of this 32 bit game! (sorry if i'm wrong) my god i swear this is more scarie than any other horror game i could have ever played!

  • J. Hartwood's diary reveals influences from H.P. Lovecraft stories. This makes the game much more frightening.

  • its funny but also very scary when you Annoy the ghost or the Mannequin of the dancer they turn into that giant spirling tower

  • This game is: MASTERPIECE!!!

  • I never though that some words can creep me out like that. Never had that feeling before

  • The music sounds a little bit like RE1.

  • Classic

  • I like your vids :D

  • in these types of videos i always expect something to make me jump.

  • The room with the ghost, bad memories. I always ended up with the room going loco on me

  • YES YOU CAN

  • can you die in this game?

  • Yup.

  • So many times it hurts...

  • idiot what kind of question is this

  • i appreciate your kindness

  • the only thing i was good at in this game was dying...

this game is HARD... could never get this far..

  • not too hard. just if your consitantly trying to do somthing impossible

  • i was thinking the same thing because he is so good at it

  • The monster at 8:21 is what scared me as a little kid. I was terrified of our bathtub for a long time and wouldn't go into the bathroom without someone else present. I haven't seen footage of it since then, and it's amazing how different memory is from reality! Thanks for posting this!!

  • listening to the the reading of jeremy's diary was absolutely brilliant. you can sense his madness at first and at the end the hope that is fleeing is soul

  • The man who speaks is a famous voice actor, he gave his voice generally to Russel Crow. Amazing vocal performance!

  • Are you saying that Jeremy's voice actor is Marc Alfos?

I didn't know. The voice actors in the first one are uncredited (although Benoît Allemane is instantly recognizable).

  • Yes Marc Alfos is his name.

By the way you did a really great translation work :)

  • The Man In Black showed his true colours he is really the Man In White

  • This game doesnt seem as creepy as it did ten years ago when i first played it

  • for me is creepier now than in 1994 i played it!!! LOL

  • I remember having nightmares from the game over screen alone. This game was terrifying as a 7 year old

  • The deaths in the diary aound descusting...

  • that thing in the bath is scary and im not easly scared i read weird tales every night before bed

  • DON'T TOUCH THE PURPLE GHOST! THAT SITING ON HIS DIRTY CHAIR!, HE VERY DANGEROUS!, WHO TOUCH HIM DIED! XD thanks to the Ministry of Defense, I hoped that you understood, If yes, you will be Okay :) If no... :(

  • the game has an english version too

  • wow, for the first game they had a lot of tricks and traps. a fine game indeed. :3

  • les doublages francais sont exelent!

  • Wow, I never knew games were so dark this early on in the gaming industry, very cool.

  • The early 1990's had a slew of great horror games for both DOS and Windows, although a lot of the games (unlike this one) go unremembered today. Check out:

    -The 7th Guest

    -The 11th Hour (7th Guest 2)

    -Dark Seed 1 and 2

    -The Dark Eye

    -Phantasmagoria

-I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream

    -Clive Barker's 'Undying'

    ;)

  • this game rules

  • Agreed, despite how dated it is, it always has that creepy atmosphere, and that's pretty much why I love it.

  • that ghost thing sitting in the chair always gave me the creeps... found out how dangerous it really was... the hard way...

  • this guy can carry gramophones ,rifleshe had a very big pants! xD no ,the version of wii that's very good in my opinion ,i had it

  • And this is where I always died : the ghost room. Never been able to get the poker without awaking him.

Now, from here, the game's totally new for me...

  • If you had a lot of fun translating this diary and if you are good in french, try to read "le horla" by Maupassant.

That's a diary wrote by a men which is progressivily haunt by madness and this is quite short, but intens.

  • I already read it and loved it.

  • @POLE7645 so did i....amazing !!

  • @nicomezi Maupassant is one of my favorite author !

His book like the same at alone in the dark !

  • I have never understood why the usefulness of the poker... do you know it? and why don't you just hit one time the monster in the bathroom: it will stun him a few seconds enough to get what you need (the jug and the first aid kit)

  • whats the mistake?

  • Actually you can kill the armor without the statue. It just takes around 100 hits.

  • i was playing this today and i knew about the ghost but i wanted to see if i could escape and i found something if you go upstairs and make it he cant get you but when you go back down he kills you and he actually attacked the knight because i was nowere near him and he came to life and the ghost surrounded him but he killed me before i could see if he could kill the knight

  • man that diary is EPIC!!!

  • How near do you have to be to the armor before its considered near and it attacks you?

  • WTF!!! omg! i was playing this when i was younger (7yrs) and i never got pass those two purple demon things 'cuz i kept trying to attack them.. lol, it was that easy! grrr :P

  • That furball is meant to be a Ghoul Pole :P

  • love that video, makes me remember when i was 10 years old , playing late at night screaming jajaajaj!!!

  • If you do a search for 'Shotgun' in this wiki article about RIFLES...

    wiki/Rifle

    You'll find that

"(Many shotguns and small arms have chrome-lined barrels to reduce wear and enhance corrosion resistance. This is rare on rifles designed for extreme accuracy, as the plating process is difficult and liable to reduce the effect of the rifling.)"

This is a Rifle. - I would know.

Shotguns are my biggest interest when it comes to firearms.

So case closed, unless you wanna keep barfing about this.

  • Thankyou so much for all the subtitles- they were really useful and informative!

  • To clean the bathroom without being hit, you can also hit the thing before it attacks you. It won't kill it, but will make it dizzy for a while. Enter the bathroom, attack it, pick the things, attack it again, and get out.

  • the gosth is the red tingh xD is like blood xP

  • Those bouncing things gave me nightmares when I was 9

  • how can i run? which button i press????

  • just incase yoyu didint know thouse things you picked up were not rifle ammo they were shotgun shells and were did you get this game?

  • also known as cartidges or w/e

  • Well, Shotguns are rifle weapons. - They are also called Buckshots.

  • no a shotgun and a rifle are very diferent the shotgun is a desendent of the musket a smooth bore firearm that was very inaccurate what they did was to place multiple ball berings (buckshot) so you dont need to be precise.

the rifle is rifled having much better accuracy that smooth bore.

and not all ammo for shotguns are buckshot.

  • Nearly all weapons that aren't handguns are called Rifles, whether it's automatic, sniper or a shotgun.

    M16 is a machinegun, it's rifle nontheless.

USI isn't, it's like an automatic handgun. A 'SMG'.

Those are the differences between rifle and not rifle.

-There is also shells called Dartshots.

  • no nearly is never becuase they are very different and an m16 is not a machinegun its an assult rifle and a sniper rifle is a rifle but its not the same use and a shotgu is still a shotgun you better get some more gunsmarts pal.

  • If a weapon is fired from the shoulder, it's a rifle. -Unless it's a panzerschreck or something.

Read this before continuing your constant moaning. (Just 'cause you're a Gunlover doesn't mean you know everything about firearms. I bet you like em from Games.)

    wiki/Shotgun

    wiki/Assault_Rifle

M16 is well a MG... If it's automatic, it's a machine gun, read Following as well:

    wiki/Gatlin_gun

P.S. You better get some typingsmarts, buddy, it's hard to understand most of what you're trying to say.

  • no i dont get my gun smarts from games i own real firearms shoot them and i am in air rifle competiton i respect them i dont think of them as toys and pleas could just fucking listen to me? not every firearm fired from the shulder is a rifle dont you understand a rifle wich was called the "kentoky" has rifling in the barrel wich makes the projectile spin and makes it accurate a shotgun dosent have it wich is why it shoots multiple projectiles to compensate for it.

  • Just 'cause some Rifle, (which you clearly got wrongly spelled,) has some spinning system, doesn't mean Shotguns aren't rifles. What does that even have to do with this conversation? Garand isn't a rifle 'cause it doesn't have that system?

Even though Shotguns scatter the projectiles DOESN'T mean it isn't a rifle. They are even called Shotgun rifles. Unless you're talking about handguns that scatter, those are clearly not rifles. -But in this example above, it's a shoulder rifle.

  • the m1 garand is rifle and anyways i dont want to keep talking to some ignorant fuck that dosent know what he is talking about so yea in other words fuck off.

  • No need to resort to offensive language just 'cause you don't understand excrement.

Why don't you read the pages I posted and get it into your thick scull that Shotguns are a type of rifle.

-This is like saying that Ordnance isn't a pistol just 'cause it uses a different system and type of ammunition than a modern Grande Puissance They are both handguns.

Alike, Sharshooting rifles and shotgun rifles are ALL RIFLES.

But, ok... We can't please every ignorant wannabe-know-it-all-geek out there.

  • hahaha did i hit a nerve? man i was jking yea i know that to some extent shotguns are rifles and what about ordnance? i nvere sayd anything about them.

  • Excuse me... But did "I" it a nerve...?

    What's all this about?

"...Anyways i dont want to keep talking to some ignorant fuck that dosent know what he is talking about so yea in other words fuck off."

Sounds like someone pissed off to me.

-So, I'm just gonna go do something more important than wasting time explaining this to you. It's well out of subject too, let the folks enjoy watching this part of AITD walkthrough. -If POLE calls it rifle ammo, who cares?

  • wow... long diary....

  • My GOD JOHNNY CASH LIVED IN DORCETA!!

  • I vote Lipton43 for best comment

  • wtf? that bathroom monster got you through the wall

  • That final puzzle, the statuette and the armor one, is the most stupid in the history of graphic adventures

  • I donlowaded this game and i can't remember how to run it's so annoying :L

  • And the Dock stikes again! XD

  • Je n'ai jamais entendu un français de France parler aussi longtemps sans utiliser des mots anglais au milieu de ses phrases dans ma vie. Thanks for the walkthrough.

  • waw this game is really freaky in french almost scares me

  • That bit with the shade/ghost of the woman scared the crap out of me when i first played it, as i hadnt noticed it at first! In my defence though i was just a kid back then! :)

  • 1:34 ManBearPig strikes again! :O

  • aparently the new 1 is rubbish

  • I heard the 360 version is good, but the wii version sucks donkey kong's balls (3 out of 10)

  • No they all suck. The story was changed completely. Why I ask? This old one kicked ass! It just feels unfinished, the controls are awful, the fighting is terrible, seriously, the original is the best.

  • GOD!!!When will you people get it?It is supposed to have bad fighting. This is a normal person not "Tommy Testatrone Tits"

  • I bet you liked that craptastic Uwe Boll film based off the new game too! We seriously let our standards for media entertainment drop these past years. I call it the mass mediocre! And you expect me to believe that game was intentionally bad? Ya, sure, whatever. He has magic pshycic powers and a sacred stone of clicheness but he can't FUCKING HOLD ONTO A PIECE OF BURNING WOOD? Bullshit!

  • Well to tell you the truth I really liked the game... except for the driving, but I can let that go, everything else seems great to me...

  • ...Buh? He holds onto burning wood great for me. o_O Must just be you.

  • I don't know if you were ironic about that document but i thought it was very very interesting.

  • oui, c'est un tres bon jeu!

  • wow I think Jeremy's Diary is the longest doc ever, isn't it ?? this game is just great, has a storyline much more complex than all others AitD..

  • hey did you add the speech when reading the diary? I do not have any sound when reading (i am using dosbox). I do not remember to have listened to any sound when I played the game the first time (but maybe it was that I only had a buzzer instead of speakers back then XD)

  • Yes, that's the official sound (from the CD version).

  • I see, thanks for the video walktrough. I just replayed the game, this is an excellent game indeed, the start of the amazing genre.

  • To KristheMus and griffin76, I believe Kris said 'owes', not owns. If this is the case, then that is true. Every survival horror game owes SOMETHING to this classic! However, if griffin76's argument is true... Well..

    :(

  • Great diary. Better even than the Keeper's Diary in RE1.

  • You are Using DOSBox?

  • Wow,that's classic.

  • still scary as hell

  • This game looks great, like a lot of people I though RE was the first survival horror.

I think the game Eternal Darkness was also inspired- but not adapted, from H.P. Lovecraft's fiction.

  • Actually, if you play the game Eternal Darkness, and I'll take it you read Jeremy Hartwood's diary. You'll see a total connection between the two story's.

  • eternal darkness is well hard, cudnt get past 1st level :S

  • I agree I see a few similarities to H.P. Lovecraft especially when he talks about dreams in his diary. Dreams often played an important part in Lovecraft's stories, not to mention the fact it takes place in the same era as his stories.

  • I heard that it is the same Edward throughout when looking at Alone in the Dark 5. Supernatural happenings I suppose. He really dose look different as time goes on though.

  • Yeah after i played AITD IV i thought i check out about the beginnings of it. And ou can see how the video Games have improved by then. The 3DO Version is the Best i guess since it has a little enhanced grafiks and the Charakters seem to walk a little faster. But is this the same Charakter as in the 4th installment? And the Movie had no resemblens with the Games?

  • I seriously don't believe it's the same character from the fourth game (but probably a descendant). He looks very different and have a different personality despite having the same name.

  • Yeah its weird they share the same name but look so different.I will doing a research about that thx for the reply.

  • The guy from the 4th game is, indeed, a descendant (nephew or something like that).

I never understood why they have to remake all videogame characters so kickass and cool these days.

Every character looks like a cheap Duke Nukem ripoff now, but, unlike the Duke himself, taking himself too seriously, with a few exceptions.

I'd rather have another game with the moustached, kung-fu kickin, bowtie wearin gentleman Mr. Carnby instead of another one of those irritanting bullies. He has personality.

  • if you touch the ghost the whole place starts shaking

  • What are those wierd Wolfhead Chicken things anyway?

  • I'd say he's having an orgasim at 8:28. UGH! Ugh! Check the gay run from 1:05. lol Its fun to laugh at old classic games!

  • Very cool. And funny how those rifle shells look more like shotgun to me.

  • Interesting indeed! Took up the entire segment of this video!

  • Resident Evil owes this game so much!

  • You idiot, this game was the first survival horror of the world, RE was released much later and copied this game, now stfu cause the new Alone in the Dark will own everything even RE4.

  • ROFL!!! AT 9:05 HE HAS AN ORGASM!

P.s.: Long live to Alone in the dark **

  • why does that rifle take shotgun shells?

  • Holy dog shit!

    Carnby: What?!

Did you see the size of that Hair ball in the bathtub!!

Carnby: that was a Hair ball!?

    Yep.

Carnby: I thought it was a wookie.

    Too much star wars?

    Carnby: yep.

  • lol I love the french voiceover lol did you translate this? If so thanks. I love old games a lot of them are better then the new ones

  • Yes, that was my own translation.

I only had the French version and I knew that there was a lot of anglophone Alone in the Dark fans.

  • Thanks you made me a fan of it as well. Will you be doing the second one at all? I would like to watch them in order if possible. Do the other ones have anything to do with the first?

  • Once I finish it, I'll probably record it.

Beside the protagonist (Edward Carnby) the second one seems to give more background the the character, but it doesn't mention his adventure in Derceto. The third one both stars Edward Carnby and Emily Hartwood (the female protagonist) which seems to imply that they got out of Derceto together.

  • Oh ok thanks XD I cant wait to watch

  • The text that is read in the video here, is related to AITD 2, isn't it?

  • the knight was fun to sword fight with and f around with, haha

  • I used to basically crap myself when I played this, you know, with the shockingly amazing graphics? Good times, right?

  • The laugh when the library door closes is unforgettable.

    "Uohohoho" XD

  • The voice-over is very dramatic. And French.

  • I want to see the ghost attack in the sitting room. I remember from years and years ago watching a friend play the game that the ghost makes a really weird sound when it attacks. I think it turns into Yog-Sothoth, a connection of large, menacing, iridescent spheres.

  • the readers voice rocks, evenj in french

  • Maybe something about your bandwidth.

It would help to empty your browser cache before viewing Youtube videos.

  • How come half of our videos take 4 hours to load, while part 5 takes less than 3 seconds?

  • Wait, I'm going to be buying the trilogy, and I heard its for windows 95, like any windows 95 game, it should work...but now I'm hearing theres a DOS (which is the win95) or MAC version..how can I make the DOS version work on my WinXP then?..

  • I use DOSBox. If you need help, send me a message.

I really should make a DOSBox tutorial.

And you're right. Beside Alone in the Dark 3, the Win95 version are just shortcuts. Alone in the Dark 3 got a REAL port, but it's heavily glitched.
