I've just discovered Yoruba dance today from a profesional cuban dancer/singer, and it did not look or sound like this. But I admit that what I've seen (and tried to do) from Yoruba dance, is really hard.
I am doing a project on Yoruban dance and theater for my drama class, and me and my friends have to attempt to put on a performance. I've been trying to find some videos that would help me understand more of the style and moves of this type of dance. I almost used this video as a reference, but thanks so much to the people whose comments let me know that this was not true Yoruban dance! I want to be able to do as much justice as possible to this culture, so thanks for helping me be accurate :)
Insulting............what do they do that makes us know they are Yoruba. If you didn't say that it is Yoruba we would not know. That means a good job was not done.
Yoruba worship and rituals are danced...there is an intensity (not speed, not swift movement, but total surrender to the rhythm, when in dance-worship.
Those who didn't like da dance, it may be due to the lack of the ritualistic connotation, meaning, it's not enough, even if it had been rehearsed, to just do the dance: you also need to feel it, personify the movements you are doing, and the significance of those movements need to be in your head while you're doing it, or else the ritualistic part is gone; hence, the magic. There's are subtle nuances that not everyone notices. It takes a mind that can capture subtleties to go there.
I'm going to assume you folks didnt have enough time to practice to show these people A REALLLLL Yoruba dance. Yoruba nimi and this dance only shows the most basic Yoruba step... yeah, you may start with this but this doesnt do it justice at all. Eitherway, i guess good that you gave it a try(?)
sorry but this doesn't seem to do justice to Yorubas. I am not yoruba but I know that when it comes to dancing Yorubas can tear up a dance floor. This seems almost lifeless.
this no be Yoruba dancing .. i no be omo Yoruba i be omo Igbo
this boring

Yoruba traditional dancing is not an easy thing to do if you did not grow up doing it, so please take it easy on them, they tried :)
