I'll put it like this: spanking, in a controlled manner, is DIFFERENT from beating or other forms of physical abuse. Do I think that there exist children who were not spanked and turned out fine? Yes. But I also know children who run amok on the streets who had wonderful parents who talked to them and it didn't help. KNOW your child - if he or she is a little wild and no, go to it. BUT mind the following things: only use a belt, only do it a few times, and only kids 6 to 12. Do not spank teens.
@zhabtema Exactly. You have parents who just spank their kids for every little thing. That's uncalled for. Me and my brother were rarely spanked, only when we did something we know we weren't suppose to do. But my Uncle spanks his kids for every little thing, and now my cousin is very violent when she wants her way.
Most americans are verry ignorant. All most evet country is kicking your ass when it comes to kids and the way there thought. Most countries where people can afford to send children to school have a 70% graduation rate. Spoild american parents raising spoild amercan brats. Thats is why america got left behind and left in the past. Once a great country and the envy of the world. Now a joke the eveyone but them. They are to stupid to even see it and how bad it will really get.
@shaylinmonk There's a difference between spoiling you're kids and using disciplinary action without hitting them. if you're saying that they're being spoiled if they're not being spanked, thats ridiculous. I was never hit as a kid and I feel like i'm a pretty good person.
Knocking the hell out of your kid is wrong but giving a little pop on the hands of rm to reinforce that doing certain things is wrong is fine as far as I'm concerned. I was never beaten but when I was of school age and did something wrong my mother would talk to me first and if that didn't work I'd get a little pop and grounded or something. I'm fine and I have a wonderful family relationship.
I don't believe in physical force and yelling, but our society becoming so damn soft that it is getting ridiculous. It is getting to the point that you can't tell a child to be quite if they are too loud or even tell them no. It is just as harmful if you never correct a child for anything. just visit a jail for a day, they are fucked up because they never reveived any correction.
I was spanked, kicked, punched, and thrown things at as a child. I still remember it and it definitely makes me sad. I don't think you should spank your child. If you can't talk your child out of doing something wrong, then you're not a good enough parent. That's why we have mouths and the ability to form sentences, to communicate. Kids are smart. Talk to them.
GIVE. ME. A. BREAK. These days, people can be put in jail for so much as wagging their finger at a kid, citing it as "child abuse". I'm not saying you should discipline children with physical force, because there are several ways to make a child regret his/her negative behavior without coming out as too harsh.
spanking isnt a bad thing, its not abuse. A spanking is supposed to be used as a last resort, I cant stand the parents who spanks there kids for every little thing, for me it stopped working after a certain age cause I got used to it, grounding is what worked cause I couldnt stand being in my house for more than 2 min out of the day. you should never spank a 1 year old, a child shouldnt recieve their first spanking until about 4 or 5 when they know right and wrong.
A"spanking" is a violent act against another more vulnerable person.By telling your children you love them;then spanking them, you are telling them that violence, pain and domination occurs in a normal, loving relationship.People talk about spanking appropriately, but it's never appropriate. There's no reason for it.There is one "benefit" SUPERFICIAL compliance. Why would you want your child to listen because they fear you?You are supposed to be the one to protect them, not the one they fear.
@sweety4271984 I completely agree. You made a very good point when you said that children will grow up thinking it's normal to be hit in "loving" relationships.
I am with that lady in the blue, I do believe in spanking as long as its not abuse and its a last resort! Because when I was little you could ground me, take stuff away from me and none of it would work! So the only thing that did work was a spanking and no my dad didnt have to do it too much either. Just like with some kids they hate to be grounded, but with me it was a joke to get grounded! But sometimes just a talk did worked too because I loved my dad and I didnt like to see him hurt.
Spar the rod spoil the child. A lion uses its teeth on a cub if its doing something stupid. If you use the palm of your hand its one thing if you use your fist its a whole different ball game.
Oh please. The problem with this generation is they don't recieve consequences for their actions. First, you try talking. If that doesn't work, timeout, if it persists. SPANK! After a certain age. Usually my son responds well after talking because he knows if he doesn't listen he will get spanked. Do I abuse him? No way. I make him understand what he has done is wrong, he usually learns. It is all dependant on how the child learns the lesson.
I hate stupid people...and they are everywhere. I wish that the "Judge" William Adams beating case made the Hot Topics discussion. Hopefully, that sadist will lose his job.
Barbara and Joy are correct in thinking that spanking is wrong. Sherrie is the moron that thinks the earth is flat...so consider the source.
It is incredibly ignorant to think that the only way to discipline a child is to hit them. We are desensitized to the word "spanking" and we forget what it really is. It's raising your hand and striking a child for misbehaving. You're teaching that child that the way to solve their problems is to hit someone. It's wrong, period.
idk, i was spanked as a child with a belt and now as a teen I get scared when people get mad or frustrated because I think the person will hit me and the person just looks at me like Im crazy when I flinch but Im so used to trying my best to make sure my parents wouldnt get mad and I tried my best to be silent and be good and perfect all the time.
I'm sorry but there is a difference between spanking and beating. I was spanked as a child and I turned out just fine. If you can remember every time you were hit, that's called beating. I think there is too much beating and not enough spanking in the world today. Sometimes I'd even like to beat some parents to make them wake up and realize there child is a disgrace to society!
why not if they believe that a god will inflict eternal pain on those who disobey or do not believe. the ultimate goodness has this twisted mentality why not the less perfect?
like sherri said for some kids their parents saying they are disappointed in them means nothing to them. both sherri and whoopi point out it is last resort and also, most parents who do spank do not spank in anger. More kids need their behind tapped. I stopped respecting my dad when he stop spanking me... as then he nothing on me and pretty much became a push over. Spanking kept from doing some mess I did not need to be in because my parents did spank and talk.
My mom never whipped me with a switch or beat me, but she busted my ass with her hand to many times to count hahaha and we are a lot closer than most people and their kids, my dad has never whipped me and we don't get along. My mother taught me to respect her and listen to her. If my mother never whipped me I dont know where I would be today.
i agree with sherri, different things work for different kids...not every child is going to respond to a parent just talking to them and not every child is going to respond to spanking.
I'm could never ever hit my child. Even if they were acting up and i was angry. I just don't have the heart to do something like that. I was spanked also as a child and it was terrible. I did not respect my mother i feared her. I hated being around her and even to this day we don't talk that much to each other. Spanking is a cycle that does need to stop. Why is it so bad to talk to your child? Why must you hit them to get through to them?
@CJCA915 - I liked her term "snaps them out of it". Seems like sometimes the talking goes through one ear and out the other then a pop on the but gets their attention and the point across.
I was raised in a house of spanking and yelling. And my brother and I have a problem with how to deal with problems. With how we were raised, we sort of have it set in our mind that you just hit the person to get them to do what you want. Or you force something, to change it's way. The cycle needs to stop. Talk to your child, don't hit them.
I'll put it like this: spanking, in a controlled manner, is DIFFERENT from beating or other forms of physical abuse. Do I think that there exist children who were not spanked and turned out fine?
