HOLLIS CT BLVD born and raised. Best neighborhood in Queens. Great houses, great diverse people, everything you want, QV has! Thx for making this video. That's my route every day, Jamaica Ave to 212 lol
Was great to see the film. I grew up in Queens Village in the late 40's early 50's. One correction. When you said this was the original Key Food, it was originally an A&P which opened in the late 30's
My whole family grew up in Queens Village. The Thompsons, and we lived in the big red house on the corner of 94th avenue and Hollis Court Boulevard --right down the block from Sal's Barber Shop and the Jewish Center. Most of us went to Incarnation, then the girls went to Mary Louis and Dominican Academy and all four of us boys went to St. Francis Xavier. Our dad was Dr. Eugene Thompson if anyone remembers him.
When you stopped at 218, I saw my home from 1984-2007. We moved there from 217 lane near st Joachim and Anne. lived right across the street and still was late to school. I had my 1st communion and Confirmation at St. Joachs, as we called it. I got married and my daughter was baptized and 1st communion at Our Lady of Lourdes. thanks for the memories..I will be checking out your other videos.
I remember Helen - she used to let my sister and I go behind the glass cases to get the penny candy, since she trusted us.
We'd ride our bikes and leave them in a pile in front of the store. I used to go to Lorenzo's Pizzeria on "the Avenue" and to Woolworth's to get my candy. Richie Rich's sold Sergio jeans and jersey shirts with iron on transfers. I had my passbook account at Jamaica Savings (now Citi) and my dad got his hair cut by Mike off of Springfield Blvd? Q33 to 179th St station.
We moved there July 7, 77 - can't forget that date. We were the 2nd Asian family to move there (from Brooklyn). I remember the folks from the neighborhood on my street (215th St) were mostly Italian and German. They were mostly tolerant, but you knew they wanted to move because you were there.
By the time I made it to HS (went to Bronx Science 'cause I didn't want to stay local), the hood had changed to mostly West Indian and Spanish. Parents finally moved to Rockland Cty in the 90s near us
@Beckala67 over the last 20-30 years Queens Village changed a lot. I moved there post movie theatres, post bars... its so weird to me to see pictures from back then lol
I was born in QV in 1957. I remember Winters, the Community and Century Theatres ( Batman and Robin appeared there in person), the 5&10, Super 5&10, Kassels and Scott Luggage. We walked down 218th Street under the railroad tressel I saw on the video to go home on 217th St. and 100th Avenue. Was Pellagrinos across from King Kullen which became the A&P before it was Key Food? I went to Saints Joachim and Anne school . And OF COURSE, I remember the smell of Bellachicos bakery!
I did hear about Batman and Robin appearing at QV, also Tony Orlando was at Community Gardens.
Went to OLL, but the grandparents lived in St Jochimin and Anne parish, so we attended many a mass there, in the old church, remember when we lit REAL candles?
King Kullen was across from 210th St. It is now the Post Office. Across from King Cullen was Rudy's Barber Shop. Rudy gave military cuts so we'd go to Sal on Hollis Court Blvd next to the Jewish Center.
I moved upstate along time ago... grew up in Q.V. A&P was there before key food. I lived on 213 st. Anyone remember pelligrinos? What about the smell of bellichicios bakery?
This film actually passed my street where we use to live. We lived on 216th Street between 94th Road and Jamaica Avenue. You guys and gals really should go on Facebook. It is amazing. They actually had a QV reunion at Fuzzy's on Braddock Avenue. It is amazing that Kassel Pharmacy is still there. I remember when Winters use to be on Jamaica Avenue.
I used to go to Helen's all the time---yes, eggcreams---awesome----I also went to 33 in the 70's and Mr. Funk was there my last year I think---before that it was Mr. Abromowitz and Mr. Gross (vp)
I remember when Woolworth's used be across the street from Citibank!! When you get the chance, please look at the video on Queens Village on my channel.
At the very beginning, the store on the corner used to be a bar...PEPPERCORNS. Used to hang there in the fall of 73. The bar scene was so much fun back then. Across the street...Jays Diner.
Helen was truly a force not to be messed with. She ran that candy store with an iron fist! She knew everybody in town and all their business, and probably became a millionaire from selling penny candy.
Mr. Funk was stabbed to death? I can't believe it. That's terrible and very sad news to me. From what I remember about him while I was at PS 33 from '84-86 was that he was always very nice to me and my younger brother. I'm glad they named the school after him.
Thanks for posting this video, haven't seen these streets since moving away in '86. I lived on 224th street across from C-town. I remember the Key Food and that church on Springfield where I had Sunday school. Great memories!
Thanks for sharing this is awesome!!!!! Grew up in QV went to 33 and 109!!!!! Thanks for sharing and I loved Mr Funk I was in 33 the first year he became principil. He was so tall and drove a mg remember that????
Thanks for sharing this. I grew up in Hollis, went to 109 and spent alot of time in all of the areas you filmed. I left the city in 81, last visited in 93. Nice to see some familiar sights.
Thanks for sharing your videos with Youtube Denise. Now we have footage of Queens Village that we can return to from time to time when we want to look back at scenes from our childhood. The sound alone is familiar with the NYC bus. For those who are interested, watch the other 4 videos that Denise took the time to post. Among other sites, you will see JHS 109 where I went to school from 1969 - 1972. My JHS 109 gym teacher, Mr. Ed Funk was stabbled to death and now has P.S. 33 named in his honor.
