@kombatwinz the quick answer would be yes, yes, and yes. Evidently you didn't notice I am wearing all three in this video... Maille was not a common item for most Vikings. Only the wealthy and capable could afford it, or get their hands on it. As for the splint greaves and vambraces I'm wearing, they are even less common and difficult to document for Vikings in their homelands. However, trade routes during that time meant they could have been found and used by Vikings.
@skallagrimm is there evidence of riveted chainmail in the 10th century or was it later because i only had bad experiances with butted chainmail adn i wanted to try out earlier eras aswel (my group does 13-15th century)
@raphael103 for the love of Odin, we are NOT a larp group! We do historical reenactment and LIVE steel combat w/ replica weapons... yes, from the Viking Age. A few of our members also do later period combat, as well.
Actually @Dantefex13, quite a few people know... this is Living History presentations with live, steel combat thrown in to demonstrate weapons, armor, and tactics. Nothing about what we do is role playing, nor are we
I commented on your other video, and i have to add that i'm impressed by this fight! It's interesting, fast paced and exciting. Well done! If this is the standard you usually reach, disregard my last comment.
Not exactly. If you notice at 0:10 he already parried one attack, but couldn't parry the second attacking following the first. So he just 180's and exposing his shied, blocking the attack and then setting up a counter attack, which was him completely the rest of the 360. the guy who lost the duel was actually pretty good, especially with that over the top of the head block at 0:14
Hey axeman dont worry about the idiots who think they know it all, fair play for giving it a go, An axe is hard to master when fighting a sword and sheild. One tip, even though it takes a lot of practice hold the axe in a left handed fashion and then deliver the attack to the enemies sword side instead of hilding it in the right hand and thus chopping more sheild side, Ur enemy will have to work hard to block and cant counter quickly either. Its what we think hurscals did, very effective
Really @clintdelicious? Did u even watch the video? Almost every attack was to my left, unshielded side. He does that for the reasons u mention and because we know it's effective... we've done this for nearly twenty years. I'm sure you were just explaining it for everyone else though, right?
@skallagrimm Sorry it seemed like you started of not doing so though and then kinda got a bi too close. I just think the initial strike should have been like the others as that appeared to be the best chance before the distance was closed. I wasnt criticising, just a suggestion. I think its a great vid and im keen to see more from you
@skallagrimm Why be such a dick to clintdelicious? I realize you are clearly the world's preeminent practitioners of Western martial arts, but he was only trying to give helpful advice. Way to shun other people interested in the community, chum.
Because i am a dick @ruebuscm. But, he and i have met and he knows perfectly well now, that I don't need instructions on how to fight with a longaxe... or a history lesson. I'm sure he'll be okay..... so what's your excuse?
@skallagrimm Yeesh. I'd hate to be the guy you're hitting with that axe. If this is how you take out your insecurity and sexual frustration on poor strangers online, I wouldn't like to feel the brunt of your impotent nerd-rage in person. Peace, buddy.
The point @swordplay4 was that its a longaxe, not a reg axe, which is evidently what the other moron thought it was. Seeing as I was there, no I'm not fucking blind.
@skallagrimm Wow, watched a lot of your vids now, all cool stuff. What's with the abundance of idiots commenting though? It's like this is trollbait, damn.
I love how at 0:20, the guy with the longaxe was pretty much screwed because that wide swing from the turn hooked the beard of his blade on the other guys shield edge. Oops.
@sexyclark1011 Actually, we 'practice' by just fighting. We don't "go over it" as if each fight is choreographed or scripted. Like anything, the more you do it the better you get at reacting to things that happen.
@chileconcarnage There is no choreography involved, but rather we start new fighters with a base set of five attacks and how to block them. After that they progress to our twelve attacks and blocks. From there they can move up to advanced weapons like bow and arrow, boarspears, swords, and longaxes.

@joshshannon I'm not sure what kind of help you expect me to be. If you're overworked and overwhelmed with real life issues, perhaps an involved hobby like this isn't in the cards for you right now. We have many members who have to come and go according to what they have happening in their day to day lives.
And being historically correct for a specific timeperiod doesn't have to break your bank. Start out small, with the simplest of "kits" for the period you want to portray. Good luck.
@skallagrimmThanks for the help man you're a champ with that longaxe on some of the other vids by the way!!! My thing is I don't know who to contact, I have the time(weekends just like most folks) the amount of money that some of the pieces cost is my only issue. I made my own tunic and pants, almost done with the shield but I guess what i wanted to know is if ya know of any groups like yours around alabama. Where do you guys personally get your kits or do ya make everything which is hella cool.
First off, it's not a poleaxe. Those came after the Viking age. What he was using is a longaxe, which was the predecessor (sp) of the later polearms.
Also, to use it's length effectively by reaching out with it, one is left quite open in one on one combat. It's more effective in this situation when used like a staff. Using it along with a shieldwall for protection allows the user more effective reaching attacks like I think you mean.
Yes it's a longaxe. I don't try to be a "smart ass". I haven't tried yet to fight against a person with a shield, though it just seems to me that the person wielding the longaxe is holding the middle of the shaft most of the time except the first attack. As an empirical question, why not use the full length of the longaxe? Well, if it is hard to use a heavy longaxe effieciently in a duel, why not use a shorter axe and use the shield he got on his back?
It's no problem Armfelt, I enjoy discussing with folks who are willing to do so, and you have legitimate questions. By the way, they are not heavy.
The point I was making by saying "staff" is that he is using the weapon with the shaft in front and across his body. The longaxe was a versatile weapon and could be used in a number of ways. Here he is using it in a way that allows him to use the 'butt' end of it for punching and blocking as well as the business end.
Having practised Jodo several years I know that staffs (that would be of the length of the longaxe) is not hold in the middle of the shaft, that would be in my opinion more suitable with a bo staff or other staffs longer than 1.50 m. A shorter staff is wielded with the rear hand at the end of the staff and the front hand at 1/3, in the normal stance. But the good thing with a staff is that you can use both ends in attacks.
In whatever way you hold a staff in Eastern disciplines is not the point here, rather the association I made was to give the overall picture of what most people think of when thinking of a staff weapon.... ie. using both ends. Having the shaft of the longaxe in front of him gives him a means by which to block attacks. He can certainly move his hands down the shaft and by simply twisting while stepping, deliver a full swing attack.... but that's not the idea when you are trying for control.
Again, these are duals done for the public and in a way that is safe because they are steel weapons. You can bet that a full on fight without pulled blows would look different, and the weaons use could be better displayed.... we do what we can with the limitations put on us to be safe.
Yes it needs to be about security in first hand. In real combat I guess one with a longaxe would try to keep distance and aim for areas that is hard to protect, eg. the legs. Or perhaps try to get around the sword wielding person even though it's tricky.
By the way another question that I have been thinking of, what do you think vikings were wearing under the chainmail, do you think they had gambesons? In my opinion only a chainmail doesnt protect much, a sword hit becomes the hit of a sledge.
Alot of Vike reenactors wear gambesons under their maille. Of course, there are some that also wear lamellar over their maille. All of these provide extremely better protection, but I've always gone with maille right over my tunics, one is linen and the other wool. I've taken some hard shots but nothing too overly painful.... again though, extra protection would be better when it counted, like full force swings from sharp blades.
Though using the longaxe like a staff seems difficult due to the actual axe being in the way, when turning the weapon around.
Once again, It is not my meaning now to seem like a "smart-ass", it is just that I am intrested in both martial arts and history so I find these things intresting to discuss.
It is hard to explain the basic use of the staff here, but if you search for an example that I found here on youtube, you will see the main idea of what i meant.
search for: Shinto Muso Ryu Honte uchi
I would have linked it before but youtube doesn't seem to allow links in the comment section.
cool! reminds me of the old days when i could fight, still practise to keep wrists strong as broke my right one when got hit by an un pulled shot between glove top and fore arm greave. please post some more!!
Yeah, you can't tell but it's actually little kids reacting, and I suppose over reacting with their friends during an education day at the event we we at....
local and nearby schools attended with over 3,000 kids going through the day. I think we did ten or twelve demonstrations that day.
Lol! Long bows can pierce platemail if there shot close enough to the target, like 50 yards.. Plus, are the two people in this vid wearing platemail...I didn't think so!
I reckon that if for you the only long, straight strung bow, made of wood and called a longbow is the one from the 12thC. then you just need to read a bit more about Viking history. The Viking's had access to laminated recurve bows, as well as bows used in the rest of the known world, but their bow made of yew wood and around six ft. long was also called a longbow.
When we talk about 12 century - then i think it is its middle. 1100 - is beginning of 12 century, 1190 - is end of 12 century :)))) So i guess there are more than 35 yers :)))
The two guys in the video are equipped in tenth to early eleventh century kit, round shields especially for someone in mail were being phased out by the kite shield during the eleventh century (in most northern armies; Anglo-Saxon, Scandinavian & of course the Normans).
Also.. don't tell me you never heard of a Viking Longbow! look it up! And they did not have plaitmail, they used chainmail. In if you didn't know, an iron tiped arrow shot from a 105 lbf draw, viking long bow would blast through chainmail like a tin can!
me and my friends are trying to train for this we are all 15 and we need some members in the netherlands near breda to train so and all thanks to your videos
Exactly, and also think you guys at Skalldborg are doing a great job. I know its almost impossible to create a fighting technique from texts, but it seems you all found your own flare. And tell the Swedish mercenary to stop wearing that ridiculous blue tunic, it's embarrassing all Swedes.
everybody knows that after viking age ,when the viking were known as all pirates of the baltic sea ,there is no other warriors going to valhalla than Polish, all east (Russia,Bialorus,Ukraine),and few Germans .
How about you learn about the Viking age, before you talk about it. It was the Scandinavians, the Danes and Norwegians to the west, and Swedes to the east who were vikings. Yet they didn't all stay, and you didn't have to go a Viking to be going to Valhalla. And certainly not the Poles, and Wends and Slavs, they didn't follow the Norse religion.
Looked like fun!I liked the use of the sheild to guard back when both hand s are bust with long axe4. I would have thought that hooking and pulling with it might have helped. i liked the use of the butt also! Great post Respect, Taki
sweet, just looking at these comments, its not the movies guys, ppl arnt all magestic and s@#t, in reality movies make people look super skilled. not the case :P
But Good battle :) next time ...try the Running Thor.. :) Come screaming with your weapon low, and then at the last moment swing it back, up over and down onto the opponant..I call it the running thor.. :)
You should perhaps stick to insulting all the other people who have left you such 'nice' comments on your Channel. I mean, rather than making comments about something you know nothing about on mine.
You cant even take a joke about it....proving you take it way to seriously...life is ment to be fun...you just ruined a moment. It was simply a joke you took ofence too...then made a personal attack on me.
Yeah, my Viking boat is actually a Chevy Suburban. It is 2008 afterall. What were you expecting? I have another video showing a friend's boat, which we get to row and sail from time to time.... so what's your point?
It is Poeticly contradictry to have Two Viking do battle in front of a row of Modern Cars...it is Ironic to see the Metal once forged into Swords, now into Cars...is my point.
Yes, they are dull. We fight alot with one another, so we are pretty much able to fight without getting hurt at all. Accidents can happen, but the style of combat allows for an "accident" to be minor. Some of us go a bit rougher, or harder.
Our shields are simple plywood, but what they used wouldn't have been much different. Planks of hardwood, or soft will break differently, but still break apart nonetheless. It's a close approx. with plywood, and easier to replace them after they get torn up.
he's right, im a member of The Vikings and you have to be over 13 to try pass your basic combat test(which is hard,im a good fighter/warrior and i failed 1 time) and over 16 to actually go on the battlefield. to use each weapon you need to pass a thorough test before being able to be permitted to use it on the field.

As an empirical question, why not use the full length of the longaxe? Well, if it is hard to use a heavy longaxe effieciently in a duel, why not use a shorter axe and use the shield he got on his back?
Armfelt87 2 years ago
It's no problem Armfelt, I enjoy discussing with folks who are willing to do so, and you have legitimate questions. By the way, they are not heavy.
The point I was making by saying "staff" is that he is using the weapon with the shaft in front and across his body. The longaxe was a versatile weapon and could be used in a number of ways. Here he is using it in a way that allows him to use the 'butt' end of it for punching and blocking as well as the business end.
skallagrimm 2 years ago
@skallagrimm
Armfelt87 2 years ago
In whatever way you hold a staff in Eastern disciplines is not the point here, rather the association I made was to give the overall picture of what most people think of when thinking of a staff weapon.... ie. using both ends. Having the shaft of the longaxe in front of him gives him a means by which to block attacks. He can certainly move his hands down the shaft and by simply twisting while stepping, deliver a full swing attack.... but that's not the idea when you are trying for control.
skallagrimm 2 years ago
Again, these are duals done for the public and in a way that is safe because they are steel weapons. You can bet that a full on fight without pulled blows would look different, and the weaons use could be better displayed.... we do what we can with the limitations put on us to be safe.
skallagrimm 2 years ago
Yes it needs to be about security in first hand. In real combat I guess one with a longaxe would try to keep distance and aim for areas that is hard to protect, eg. the legs. Or perhaps try to get around the sword wielding person even though it's tricky.
By the way another question that I have been thinking of, what do you think vikings were wearing under the chainmail, do you think they had gambesons? In my opinion only a chainmail doesnt protect much, a sword hit becomes the hit of a sledge.
Armfelt87 2 years ago
Alot of Vike reenactors wear gambesons under their maille. Of course, there are some that also wear lamellar over their maille. All of these provide extremely better protection, but I've always gone with maille right over my tunics, one is linen and the other wool. I've taken some hard shots but nothing too overly painful.... again though, extra protection would be better when it counted, like full force swings from sharp blades.
skallagrimm 2 years ago
Ye, I guess if the warrior could pay for a maille, he could also purchase cloth armour or perhaps many layers of kirtles or sarks?
It's sad that most biological remains like leather and cloth is destroyed. Well, I guess it leaves more work for archaeologists and historians.
Armfelt87 2 years ago
Though using the longaxe like a staff seems difficult due to the actual axe being in the way, when turning the weapon around.
Once again, It is not my meaning now to seem like a "smart-ass", it is just that I am intrested in both martial arts and history so I find these things intresting to discuss.
Armfelt87 2 years ago
@skallagrimm
It is hard to explain the basic use of the staff here, but if you search for an example that I found here on youtube, you will see the main idea of what i meant.
search for: Shinto Muso Ryu Honte uchi
I would have linked it before but youtube doesn't seem to allow links in the comment section.

Is Live Steel the name of an event or organization, or is it some form of metal weapon sparring?

A live steel group, is any group which practices combat with rebated (bluntened) steel weapons.

I know an ancient and deadly way to win a sword fight. Bring a longbow....Or a gun.
Zovex11 2 years ago
Not original joke. :P
Also...
Vikings had no longbows, and longbow could not pierce platemail.
And nukes are more powerful....
RedMarxMan 2 years ago
Vikes did have longbows, but did NOT have plate armor, but a longbow can pierce plate. :P
skallagrimm 2 years ago
I know that they had no platemail. I think i was drunk, when i wrote that :))))
RedMarxMan 2 years ago
Lol! Long bows can pierce platemail if there shot close enough to the target, like 50 yards.. Plus, are the two people in this vid wearing platemail...I didn't think so!
Zovex11 2 years ago
Wellm here on youtube are test vid where armorpiercing arrow from longbow at 140 miles per hour, cound not pierce breastplate from 20 yards.
And maybe we talk about different weapons but longbow appered around 12 century, 200 years after times of vikings.
Vikings had bows, but not longbows....
RedMarxMan 2 years ago

SMChurchill 2 years ago
Also.. don't tell me you never heard of a Viking Longbow! look it up! And they did not have plaitmail, they used chainmail. In if you didn't know, an iron tiped arrow shot from a 105 lbf draw, viking long bow would blast through chainmail like a tin can!
Zovex11 2 years ago
That was very entertaining actually, i like it , might join a viking group, Got 13th Century stuff but aint in a group lol.

Seems you guys know about pre-gunpowder combat quite a bit. Any idea where I can find Roman Gladius combat training, or long-sword/shield training?

Uhtred31 2 years ago
How about you learn about the Viking age, before you talk about it. It was the Scandinavians, the Danes and Norwegians to the west, and Swedes to the east who were vikings. Yet they didn't all stay, and you didn't have to go a Viking to be going to Valhalla. And certainly not the Poles, and Wends and Slavs, they didn't follow the Norse religion.

Did you see all though vintage Viking Cars in the background...SO Thats how they got here, wasn't by boat it was by Ford ;0
Samhains 3 years ago 2
Yeah, my Viking boat is actually a Chevy Suburban. It is 2008 afterall. What were you expecting? I have another video showing a friend's boat, which we get to row and sail from time to time.... so what's your point?
skallagrimm 3 years ago
This is my point.
See the Poetry? The Irony, the motion?
It is Poeticly contradictry to have Two Viking do battle in front of a row of Modern Cars...it is Ironic to see the Metal once forged into Swords, now into Cars...is my point.

Are the sword/axe dulled? How skilled do you have to be to fight like that without hurting them accidentally?
Lastly is that what a real shield would have been like? It got torn apart pretty bad.
Impressive video.
wrongfire 4 years ago
Yes, they are dull. We fight alot with one another, so we are pretty much able to fight without getting hurt at all. Accidents can happen, but the style of combat allows for an "accident" to be minor. Some of us go a bit rougher, or harder.
Our shields are simple plywood, but what they used wouldn't have been much different. Planks of hardwood, or soft will break differently, but still break apart nonetheless. It's a close approx. with plywood, and easier to replace them after they get torn up.
skallagrimm 4 years ago
Ah ok, thanks for the information, I want to see one of these one day, looks very intense.
wrongfire 4 years ago
he's right, im a member of The Vikings and you have to be over 13 to try pass your basic combat test(which is hard,im a good fighter/warrior and i failed 1 time) and over 16 to actually go on the battlefield. to use each weapon you need to pass a thorough test before being able to be permitted to use it on the field.
