They are anual growth rings! That was a soft wood pine, not even a hard wood. Timber is growen as a crop all around the world, There are big deforestation projects around the globe, espec in Brazil, mainly to create room for agriculture. In those regions there is a lot of room for improvement, however over all the timber and forestry industry is very profesional and timber is a crop. Even big old hard woods have a life cycle and do die. The problem is over stated!

Couple of things. First of all, trees are precious, yes, but they are still needed in today's society, so don't go saying that forestry is bad. Forestry is good, as long as its well managed. Second of all, this tree isn't as old as this claims it is. They are counting every tree ring as 1 year, but in rainforest's, with a constant warm climate, trees can't be aged using rings, since most trees will have 4-5 rings a year. Not all clear cuts are bad, just those poorly managed
