This part is so Gorgeous. I hate reading people saying that she's destroying the song, because her voice isn't all "smooth". But she's conveying SO MUCH EMOTION here! The cracks and the fact that she's sometimes half talking is what makes it so intense and true: she's LIVING it. AWESOME actress.

It doesn't matter whether she can sing or can't -- I believe she can. She's done musicals before.

What does matter is the emotion an actor/tress can bring to a performance. And Meryl Streep conveyed more than emotion -- she gave the character a heart. I too enjoyed her performance and hope she wins the Oscar. The woman blew me away; she really made the movie enjoyable.

One of the things I love most about Meryl in this movie, and I think this scene is the epitome of it, is how 'real' she sing-acts her scenes. Even though she's got an amazing voice, it's not always her obsession, it's all about acting the scene right out properly, even if it means wavering on the note for a little cry or whimper or something. It's one of the 'truest' musical performances I've ever seen. Can't stand it when it is so obviously miming to a studio recording.
