  • my great grandfather Charles R Thompson served with the 58th Inf 4th Inf Div during this battle, and was orderd to fall back and he diden't he stayed and moved forward into woods. I recently got all his stuff and a letter from his captain saying how proud he was of my great grandfather,he went up against over 2 dozen german snipers,30 german machine guns. He was then captured on october 7th and was a pow till december. He was gassed, beaten, feed moldy food and dirty water.

My grandfather served in the the 8th Infantry and was on D-Day, he passed away in the late 70's so I never knew him, but I have his patches and M1 and his medals and papers and pictures that my grandmother saved.
