A friend of mine says that when the main engine is started up and driving the generator, the powerswitch will flip back from "Main Power" to "Battery". Is this true?
@Skull24Crusher Starting the engine is extremely simple. Once the engine RPM hits ~20%, engage the fuel flow (0:44) and you're golden. Then you just need to make sure your INS is ready, flip a few more switches, and boom. Ready to go.
@Skull24Crusher Well you do NOT want 100s of buttons to flip when there is an enemy squadron 50 nm from your air base ready to bomb it to smithereens ;)
How did you manage to get away with bringing a electronic that records video onto the flightline in a deployed location? And then broadcasting potentially sensitive (but not realistically) material all over the internet? Did you get permission or just kind of went ahead and did it?
@wolf1010 Is that a serious question. It's not like the flightline is a magical place where no electronics are allowed. Should you have a camera? No. But I always have my phone on me especially when i'm running up a sniper pod so I can record retards on the other side of line dancing and doing stupid shit.
Can I make you a question? I play Falcon, (I know that it is nowhere like a real life jet) but the starter is also turned to Start 2... what is Start 1 used for?
@Stover36 Start 1 and 2 Simply control if you are starting off of 1 or both of the JFS accumulators to turn over the JFS...You can start off 1 but the typical start is with 2
@WinchesterRanger At idle the nozzle is fully open..94-106% and is closes the further you have the throttle up....At mil power the nozzle is between -3 - 10% and as you enter the augmenter stage of the engine the nozzle actually opens back up and then further at max augmenter....The FTIT usually peaks at start and then settles back down below 650C' at idle....The temp may be slighjtly different on each start, factors that can change it are the air temp outside, if theres wind..etc...
@AirlinePilot2008 And your tech data for running the various avionics systems you switch on in this video is... where? And you're qualified to run them? Your 623's show it? You've been signed off? You are one of the parasite crewchiefs who messed with systems you weren't qualified to mess with. I know the engine-run procedures: you didn't follow them in this video. A real F-16 person isn't impressed. More to the point, you should be de-qualified for blatant tech data violation.
Hey AirlinePilot. I was wondering: I have heard on many F-16s that signature turkey-feather whine on throttle up. When the aircraft does that, what are the conditions under which it would make that sound? Do only aircraft with certain engines do that?
@beroth1 The sound you are talking about is from Pratt and Whitney engines, and it comes from the CENC (Convergent Exhaust Nozzle Control) It uses air to open and close the exhaust nozzle and the whining noise is the air being expelled.GE engines use engine oil hydraulically to move the nozzle
nice video, i swore in last wensday and now im a dep'r lol. but what is your afsc? what enlisted job would allow me to sit in the cockpit and work around the jets in general?
@StormJordan15 Any aircraft maintenance afsc that would require you to need access to the cockpit. Pretty much all of them except for most backshop afsc's
Ok cool, thanks for that info ... it is similar then to the Cheetah that I played with here, as you also tilt up the lever ... just wish I could tilt up the lever on a live jet :P
Thanks for the reply AirlinePilot, much appreciated. Just a question relating to after burner ... is it at all similar to a Mirage / Cheetah where you sort of lift the throttle to switch on after-burner and when it is lifted, allows you to push it further forward, or does it work with a button on the F16?
@androidza1 On the F-16 its actually called Augmenter. Its pretty much exactly that of an afterburner. There are two settings for augmenter, min aug and max aug. The way that the engine is placed into augmentation is by advancing the throttle all the way into intermediate (mil power) against the mil stop, and then lifting (its actually more of a tilting action) the throttle up and over the mil stop and advancing it the rest of the way into augmenter.
@androidza1 The motion you see at 0:46, is I'm placing the throttle over the "cutoff" detent into the "idle" position. This introduces fuel to the engine and combined with ignition will allow the engine to sustain itself, increase RPM, and stabilize at idle
Holy shit, you gotta be kidding me! We can't take pics of aircraft on base, BUT you got video of how to turn them on(with labels for JFS, and the correct RPM's to do everything at!). Crazy man!
how come i make a video fo my f-16 crew class.. and get absolute hell for it.. and 100% in trouble.. but you can film in the cockpit and still have this up? i mean..great video.. but i dont get it anymore
AWESOME vid bro, i wish i had the chance to strap a jet on. my stepmom works for a company and on one project she was doing boresight testing at an AFB and got a chance to sit in an F16..... i wish i was that lucky :-)
The "trigger" that you are talking about is called the "cutoff permission switch" or "pinky trigger". Once pulled it allows you to move the throttle up and back into the cutoff position to shut down the engine. The bring the throttle to the idle detent you simply lift and move the throttle into the idle detent, you dont need to pull the trigger. I just like to keep my finger on it in case i need to shut down or "motor" during the start for any reason.
Actually I would never show anything classified in my vids. I never showed the HUD, DED or a close up of anything anything else classified or secret. Just a simple vid on a few of the perks of my job.
i'm a crew chief as well, granted not a 7 level yet, but i'm just saying i asked someone here about that and they were like yeahhh, i don't think that should be here. j/w. i work on block 25s at luke.
Great video. I'm thinking of joining the 144th fighter wing in Fresno, CA (f-16's) while I finish my degree at Fresno State. Do you think I could serve for awhile then apply to OTS for a pilot slot with that unit? I have my PPL now with about 80 hours, not that it matters a whole lot I don't think
First of all AWESOME that you have your PPL that will for sure weigh in when it comes time to submit a package. Sounds like you are on the right track, and I would recommend being enlisted first and getting "in good with the unit" get to know people, and work your butt off so when it comes time to submit an officer package, you will have plenty of people recommending you and writing letters for you. And you could get offered a pilot slot at your unit. Best of luck. Study for the AFOQT
What kind of jobs could I do and how long should I enlist for? I plan on being done with college in 2-2.5 years. My major is business and I know the AF likes technical degrees, but how will that play?
Actually I really was checking certain systems to make sure they were set correctly. I know it looks rehearsed, but keep in mind I've done this a lot and this is how I "flow" around the cockpit
There is a cutoff detent and an augmentor detent. You life the throttle up over the cutoff gate to bring it into the idle position but you have to press the "pinky" trigger and lift it to bring it back into the cutoff position to shut it down.
Gummess, Thanks for watching, 800 is pretty normal for that RPM range on start. Its just at the peak of the startup and the hottest part of the start, some engines are less and some a touch more. Yeah, and US got block 40/42, 50/52, F-22 and F-35 (to replace 16s0. So what's your point? That UAE was finally able to buy an old airframe with some upgrades while we got better next gen equipment?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Dunno who your ass deployed with at Balad, but I sure think its bullshit that your taking the time to video this. Especially on Deployment. Waste of time, waste of resources. Sure the video might be cool, but really?
On deployment, you have nothing but time when you're working 12's. When there are no jets to fix, what else do you expect to do? Go back to hthe shop an play X-Box? Besides, it's a maintenance run. I'm sure there was a reason for the run. You can't just hop in, call MOC and tower to run an acft just for the fuck of it. There was no was of resorses or time.
We never turn on SMS on maintenance runs unless it needed to be troubleshot with the engine running, but that never happens or at least I've never seen it done. Thanks for watching
Wow great vid! I'm in to Falcon 4 and this vid is great at demonstrating how it's done in the real world! Was this vid prior to take off? I noticed you skipped the SMS avionics switch on the H panel. I'm looking foreward to more videos like this!
This was a maiteneance run so not need to hit SMS. And they in the desert so I not they got live missles on them. Most maintainers would never hit the SMS switch, even if it is de-armed.
Good vid. Forgot the spider lock though!!! Lol. But ur bold for the cockpit vids. Especially after that frog incident. I'll keep my cam outside so OSI don't bite me in the ass later. Good shit though!!
Its pretty easy to start the engine on the F-16. Main power switch, JFS switch, wait for the RPM's to build to about 20% and the SEC light to go out, move the throttle "over the horn" into idle, and just wait and watch for normal temps, pressures and speeds. Now when stuff goes wrong, thats when you need to know whats up, and what switches to flip and in what order....pretty much everything off....in a nutshell. The more experienced you get the more fun you get to have with other systems.
lol no special code no crazzy computer hack just jump in warm up and punch it ...? So when you all are sleepin I can jack one for a mid-night run somtime right ? lol
thats true, but you forget the parking brake and external lights and some other switches:P, in Holland the pilots wait about 2 minutes to move the throttle "over the horn" they do that to burn the JFS's exhaust clean. thats why we have a big black puff of smoke coming out the JFS when it shuts down. nice vid BTW
Definetely pursue what you want to do in life. Ive been doing this job for a long time, and have done more engine runs than I can count, I have a routine or "flow" that I do everytime I get in the cockpit. Its like anything you do enough you get good at it and it becomes second nature to you.
I was corious about MFD! How come block 30 has color MFD :)..But I got the answer already(your last comment)..I always wanna be pilot but I couldn't..Anyway thanks for video..

What is the relationship of thrust to the position of the con-di nozzle, i.e. 100% dry = nozzle 80% closed, full burner = 100% open etc.
Also - it was interesting that the TET dropped significantly as the engine lit, is that normal?

The "trigger" that you are talking about is called the "cutoff permission switch" or "pinky trigger". The bring the throttle to the idle detent you simply lift and move the throttle into the idle detent, you dont need to pull the trigger.

So when you all are sleepin I can jack one for a mid-night run somtime right ? lol
dimebag5462 3 years ago
thats true, but you forget the parking brake and external lights and some other switches:P, in Holland the pilots wait about 2 minutes to move the throttle "over the horn" they do that to burn the JFS's exhaust clean. thats why we have a big black puff of smoke coming out the JFS when it shuts down. nice vid BTW

so simple to start an f16...you become so lazy:)
roadrunner304 3 years ago
yes, just turn on the JFS, once the JFS is on speed unlock the throttle to idle, and within a minute you're up to idle speed.

Definetely pursue what you want to do in life. Ive been doing this job for a long time, and have done more engine runs than I can count, I have a routine or "flow" that I do everytime I get in the cockpit. Its like anything you do enough you get good at it and it becomes second nature to you.

Man, when you started flipping all the buttons in five seconds you just crushed my dream of becoming an F-16 pilot :p
