Hello, you all don't know me but I stood where those people once did. I was in the same position. I wanted to end my life and to me, the bridge seemed heavenly. My friends save me that day and I am and will forever be thankful, grateful for all of which occurred and didn't occur that fateful day.

Are the jumps filmed by people who have just realized that there is someone who wants to jump, or did they send a crew/person there to wait for it and film it ?
If they send someone then all your "the person is too far away to help" arguments are kind of invalid because instead of waiting so many hours to film someone, could be used to wait on that bridge and help people. I'd really like to know...
Ugh. The film crew set up cameras and had camera men at the base of the bridge for an entire year to document jumpers. They did call 911 every tiime they spotted or suspected a jumper and saved around 6 lives by doing so. But unless you think they can turn into Superman and fly up to catch the people I have no idea how you think they are supposed to help.

What they should have done is given him help, i.e. access to a hotline, called 911, etc.

Were it not for the support of friends, family, and my significant other, I probably would not be alive today. I was asked to take my friends sister around Alaska for a week, sight seeing, camping, etc. She had a wonderful time, month later shot herself.... leaving, 2 young kids behind.......... never gave me a clue, didnt even act depressed

Unfortunately, anti- dpressants take up to 7 weeks to work on your system. I hope he knew that. some psych professionals say that some suicides have a pretention to elation (because they're happy that the pain will stop). I myself when in a depression I show signs of NO emotion. i have'nt had a bout of depression in 30 months (knock wood). Zoloft helps.
I think that anyone who just talks about killing themselves no matter how much or if you think they are just "messing" around you should report it! its just something that needs to be done :(

The filmakers set up cameras at the base of the bridge. Every time they saw someone climb the rails they called 911. What do you want them to do, fly up there like superman?
Not every time. But it is a well-known risk in mental health treatment that extremely depressed people go through a stage of greater suicidal risk when their medications begin to work. When they are rendered helpless by depression, they do not have the mental energy to devise a plan to kill themselves; but once they are functioning they can. That is why on-going treatment is so important.
What you said there is simply NOT the whole truth. The meds have been found to increase suicidal ideation... Which means that one starts to think about and consider suicide more often. That is not the same as "having more mental energy" to commit suicide.
I see a lot of comments about how "creepy" or "insensitive" Gene's friend is.
I think that she reacted in a way that was appropriate to the situation. There comes a point when there is nothing left that you can say. I think she had accepted the fact years beforehand that Gene was going to kill himself. She mourned his death before it even took place. She didn't *want* him to kill himself, but she knew that it would eventually happen. When someone wants it that bad, you learn to let them go.
The biggest common factor for all these people who commit suicide. Nobody ever understood them, nobody ever knew what the fuck they were about. Just listen to these interviews. These people almost don't give a fuck about them. They just say well uhh he committed suicide, I didn't think he was serious but hey uhh I guess he was lol. People need to understand how anti-depressants work. They are not a cure-all. And more often than not, you get quite suicidal when you 1st start taking them.
They can take up to 6 weeks to work. And more than likely, you will have to try multiple kinds before you find one that works for you.
The scariest thing is not people jumping off the bridge, the scariest thing is that people are just acting like its normal and remain calm when people crosses the fence.

Are the jumps filmed by people who have just realized that there is someone who wants to jump, or did they send a crew/person there to wait for it and film it ?
If they send someone then all your "the person is too far away to help" arguments are kind of invalid because instead of waiting so many hours to film someone, could be used to wait on that bridge and help people. I'd really like to know...

Ugh. The film crew set up cameras and had camera men at the base of the bridge for an entire year to document jumpers. They did call 911 every tiime they spotted or suspected a jumper and saved around 6 lives by doing so. But unless you think they can turn into Superman and fly up to catch the people I have no idea how you think they are supposed to help.

Unfortunately, because of their inaction, they could have well contributed to his state of mind. You should always take threats of a suicidal nature seriously. Period. What they should have done is given him help, i.e. access to a hotline, called 911, etc.

Were it not for the support of friends, family, and my significant other, I probably would not be alive today. I am very sorry to hear about your father, and can't imagine your feelings of guilt and loss. But there IS help for these problems; medication, therapy, a myriad of treatments. There is hope.

Unfortunately, anti- dpressants take up to 7 weeks to work on your system. I hope he knew that. some psych professionals say that some suicides have a pretention to elation (because they're happy that the pain will stop). I myself when in a depression I show signs of NO emotion. i have'nt had a bout of depression in 30 months (knock wood). Zoloft helps.

Not every time. But it is a well-known risk in mental health treatment that extremely depressed people go through a stage of greater suicidal risk when their medications begin to work. When they are rendered helpless by depression, they do not have the mental energy to devise a plan to kill themselves; but once they are functioning they can. That is why on-going treatment is so important.

I think that she reacted in a way that was appropriate to the situation. There comes a point when there is nothing left that you can say. I think she had accepted the fact years beforehand that Gene was going to kill himself. She mourned his death before it even took place. People need to understand how anti-depressants work. They are not a cure-all. And more often than not, you get quite suicidal when you 1st start taking them.
They can take up to 6 weeks to work. And more than likely, you will have to try multiple kinds before you find one that works for you.
